Mets need an extra starter for Friday's double dipper. Who's it gonna be?

I'm convinced it'll be Mejia. He's already on the 40 and it's a one-time thing at least for the time being, so prolly too much to risk on accelerating Syndergaard or Montero.

The benefit of Schwingy (if there is one) is that they can DFA him after his 5 IP, 5 ER performance and not lose him. The downside is that he's Swchwingy.

DeGrom is the interesting one. Sandy mentioned him as a guy they will likely wanna (and hafta) add to the 40 after the year.

Jacob deGrom --- ninth rounder from 2010 out of Stetson University in Florida, which I'm sure is just one of those Florida schools that's a giant front for the athletic program. Has progressed steadily if unspectacularly after missing all of 2011 with tomato juice surgery, but as a converted shortstop, probably has some unrealized potential. Has yet to start more than 19 games in a minor league season, and is already at 18 this year, starting two in St. Lucie, 10 in Bingo, and six in Las Vegas.

As a former infielder and then former closer in "college," he's a good athlete, and that's helped his mechanics. His fastball, like the Notorious B.I.G.'s career, sits in the mid-nineties with a peak around 97. He gets a lot of grounders, which Biggie never did. His top secondary offering is a slider which has worked as a change as well. He's definitely in the secondary pack of prospective starters behind Wheeler, Snydergard, and Montero, but has been looking for a third strong pitch. If he gets anything else working in the secondary repertoire, he can be a stateside Montero --- a real find. But since he's much older than Montero, the Mets need to find out now. Else, he probably goes to the bullpen to see if he can pound the strike zone with what he's got and fashion a Henry Owens/Matt Lindstrom type of career.

His promotion to AAA happened after a void was created by Wheeler and Torres getting called up and McHugh getting traded, but --- HEY! --- he stuck!

I might be wrong but I believe the immortal Jeff Duncan was a Stetson Man.

edit -- I am wrong.

Lenny DiNardo - 3rd round pick in 2001, lost to Boston via Rule 5 draft following the 2003 season.
Pitched parts of six seasons in MLB thru 2009 and still pitching in Independent ball as we speak (type).

Hopefully more Lindstrom (still active and productive in the ChiSox pen) than Owens (out of the majors after 2007, out of baseball after 2009).

Re: Mejia, Montero, Schwinden, deGrom

It should be Mejia. No sense in adding anyone to the 40 man for a meaningless start.

Hell, activate Gooden. At least it will put fannies in the seats.

You know, that would be enormous fun. If you're going to add someone to the roster anyway... have him work out behind the scenes for a few weeks to build up arm strength, then let him loose for one game.

Re: Mejia, Montero, Schwinden, deGrom

Mejia has pitched all of 24 innings this season, spread out between the GCL, St Lucie, and Binghamton.
Am I to assume that these were all recent innings and that he is now pitching in regular rotation?

He has started twice at Bingo for a total of 11 IP

btw, Gary mentioned last night the possibility of moving Wheeler back to Friday and getting [the mystery man] up here for Thursday's game.

That would kind of kill the idea of adding El Mysterioso with the spontaneously developing 26th spot on the roster that they have available for double headers.

5-4, 2.57 in 13 starts (3 CG) for the Ducks.

Willis also DHed one game, 1-2, 3 RBI, 2 SF. They could use a lefty bat on the bench.

Mejia's last game was for Binghamton last Saturday.
His line was: 6IP 3H 1ER 2BB 8K

Thursday would be his next scheduled start.
