I'm guessing that this is another one of those crime chick stories that 'everyone is talking about' but I somehow have never heard of. There have been a lot of those lately. I'm OK with that.

I'm OK with that. Yeah its been in the news as, depending who writes about it, it fits both the left-wing "the legal system is racist" agenda and the right-wing "gun rights" agenda... So all the news outlets are on it now.
