Those Met Commercials - Take 2

What about Baginski? "What about him?" Well, he's only hitting .027... "I think you have to give him time. The kid shows a lot of heart, plus his play in the field is much better." Does it have anything to do with the fact he bought the team? "Next question." I love this commercial. The scene where he's calling his shot as the pitch whizzes by floors me every time.

Hey it could be worse, it could actually be accurate. I just recently found out that Jeff Wilpon was once a 5th (I believe) round pick by the Seattle Mariners.

I wish they'd just go back to the damn Foxwoods jingle. These others are so much more irritating. Actually, I wish Foxwoods would massively slash it's advertising budget.

I wish the Mets would please stop running the newsreel spoof "vote for Jose Reyes for All-Star" commercial. It's cheesy enough in a vacuum, but made even worse by the fact that he's got no business being the starting All-Star SS this year.

Plus, I always associate All-Star Game politic-ing as a 'small-town' thing. NYC used to consider itself above that sort of thinking.

Some longtime Knick fans trace the downfall to the introduction of 'The Knick City Dancers'. I'm not sure when (or why) stadium operators got the idea that us morons in the seats would lose interest if we had to go a whole 30 or 40 seconds w/o being entertained. Jeez, we'd actually have to talk to the people we went to the game with or something.

When my brother brought my Dad to the Garden last season, they had to leave at halftime, because the overstimulation was so offputting that the oldd man couldn't appreciate the basketball that took place in betwen the epic light sabre battles, or whatever else they were throwing at him. He's an old guy, but it's not like he's a sociophobe who can't stand noisy crowds. Heck, when he was a beat cop, crowd control was one of his favorite assignments. His BS meter just wouldn't stop ringing.

The 8-gazillion variations on the Foxwoods "psychiatrist-word association" ads are grating and annoying. I'll take the jingle any time, at least its melodic and catchy.

Am I supposed to know who the chick is - Toni (Tony?, Tone?) Roberts - on those Las Vegas radio commercials that are running endlessly during Met games? She comes on like her name is common knowledge but I have no idea who she is except that she sounds like Melanie Griffith ... which isn't really a good thing either. Griffith may be the worst "big name" actress in the business and this one sounds like she's reading cue cards just like MG does.

i am gonna try to use the hand-flip-over "fresh toast my sub" sign on the local sandwich artist at subway later tonight. i know willie says they dont use that sign in queens. but i live in jersey so maybe they know that one here.

"Dude, I can see like 80% of your head..." I think the Toyota of Manhattan guy (the one who puts his fist through a picture of someone I don't know) is trying to capture the spirit of the old Crazy Eddie commercials. He's doing it poorly. I remember hearing a few years back that Crazy Eddie went to jail. Let's hope they come get this Toyota guy soon as well.

Eddie Antar got convicted on fraud and racketeering charges. I think it's hard to under-rate (my first respondent tells me that I must mean "over-rate" here) how competitive the retail electronics business is. At the end of the eighties, well-backed national chains started systematically knocking out local and regional chains like Eddie. He could no longer maintain his market share, but still had a name and a high profile thanks to his memorable pitch man Jerry Carroll. Rather than congratulate himself on good run and take the the best offer for the remnants of his business, Antar tried to go public and take on the threat. The charges were related to his IPO, and I guess they cooked the books to make themselves more attractive to investors. If I recall correctly, I think he fled the country, first to Costa Rica then to Israel, and had a high-profile extradition case where he denied his identity to Israeli officials. The moral is to cash in and get out of the fight game while you still have your wits. Last I heard his grandkids are trying to re-establish the name, perhaps as an online retailer. He's probably served his stretch by now.

Ok, you guys know the commercial where the guy runs out of gas, and the gas lady comes out to get him, and her boss says to her "Isn't that the third time this month?" hinting that the driver is doing it on purpose so he can see her. Shouldn't the woman be attractive?

Shouldn't she like pour the contents of the gas can on him and threaten to strike a match if he doesn't quit coming up with lame excuses to stalk her? And I guess they figure they're already stretching the limits of believability by putting a female who even that good looking into a garagre jumpsuit. If they tried to slide a Tyra Banks lookalike in there we'd never buy it.

I used to think y'all had the same commercials we do. Last year, it was the one with the guys burglarizing a place until they run into the appropriate team's memoribilia and then carefully putting everything back and leaving a yellow note on the repaired window. This year, it's everyone wearing rally caps, even store mannequins, and the team gets a hit or the passing on of the two-fingered sign so the hitter would know the deuce was coming. I guess that's not the case as I don't know this gas commercial y'all are talking about.

We get them too, Annie. I like the burglar one and the mechanics with the fish ones best. I'm starting to think I am the only one that has to put up with the 4 minute long Fitness Made Simple commercials, which frequently cause me to miss the first pitch of an inning, because I cannot believe that nobody else ever complains about them. They are gross, unprofessionally made, too long, too frequent, the guy in them is a flaming fag, and not at all attractive. And he plays with himself. Anyway, the above ad is for Mobil and there is a guy with a cute little red convertible that runs out of gas and the pretty gas station girl comes and puts a gallon of gas in his tank so he can make it to the station. The joke is, he seems to do it about once a week. It's really a kind of nice ad, two shy folks just trying to connect.

That gas girl is very cute. I just wish they'd do the sequel already when she laughs at him the fourth time and says something really funny and leaves him out there with that stupid dashboard thingy.

The universal commercials usually come from Fox Sports Net. I've noticed a bunch on the MLB package. Although I think they were more in vogue last year - I don't recall seeing quite as many this year.

I think the oddest thing about those Toyota of Manhattan commercials is the random woman at the end that turns to the camera and says "It's true." And Christine Glavine looks like the chick from the gas station commercials: "I'll see you at the station."
