So who is coming when? Let me know, as I'd like to have youse all over one of those nights.

KC
Jun 18 2005 11:57 AM

We'll hit DC prolly early afternoon Sunday. I originally only had Mon and
Tues booked at the hotel you hooked us up with and I must say I thought
it was very nice of them to let me add Sunday at the same group rate.

Shannon sounds like a real hottie, but I digress ....

ScarletKnight41
Jun 18 2005 12:29 PM

We'll be coming down Sunday and staying three nights. I don't know the timing for Sunday yet - it depends whether the little guy has a Little League game that day. I'll know more by the end of the week.

In the meantime, what's the plan for 4th of July fireworks? Where should we meet for that?

KC
Jun 18 2005 12:37 PM

I'd like to tailgate on the fourth! Anyone know RFK's tailgaiting policies?

ScarletKnight41
Jun 18 2005 12:41 PM

They probably haven't gotten around to making policies yet. They still have Expos Baseball on the caller ID (I'm serious!).

Edgy DC

Weather has been great the last few days down here.

Projected July 4 weather.

Willets Point
Jun 18 2005 09:27 PM

The wtb & I are flying in Saturday morning and staying with friends in Virginia and then flying home Monday night because we both have to be at work on Tuesday. I'm hoping we see the fireworks from the plane. We'll be visiting lots of college friends but if Edgy comes up with something maybe we can drop in.

ScarletKnight41
Jun 19 2005 04:18 PM

Vic - there's a ticket with your name on it, and a young lady in our group who would be happy to talk your ear off about Broadway musicals and comic books. Will you be joining us?

Rockin' Doc
Jun 20 2005 12:03 AM

Our family will be arrriving the morning of Saturday, July 2nd. We will depart for home by noon on Tuesday, July 5th.

I think tailgating for the game would be great. I plan to bring some pork barbecue and chilled beer for the event. Should be a great time.

ScarletKnight41
Jun 20 2005 07:20 AM

I still have one ticket left. Any takers?

soupcan
Jun 20 2005 09:29 AM

Wish I could.

I'll be there in spirit.

Or dispirit as the case may be if this woeful team doesn't get its friggin' act together.

KC
Jun 20 2005 08:19 PM

This is a Redskins page, but I doubt the jist is different for baseball.

I'll bring a couple of grills and tables. If everyone just brings what they want
to eat and drink and sit on we'll be set.

So when's a good time for evuhbody to come by the Train Station (Casa d'Edgy) for a meal?

ScarletKnight41
Jun 23 2005 09:28 AM

Should we aim to gather the night of July 3?

Also, what is the plan for fireworks on the 4th?

MFS62
Jun 23 2005 09:30 AM

Rats!

When I saw Mom's post about the remaining ticket I was going to go home and ask MMYF if we had anything planned that weekend. Before I could ask, she told me that a relative is moving to Texas and wold be coming up that weekend to say good-by. (Unfortunately, the relative is on my side of the family)

Maybe next time. I would have loved to have put some faces to the names.

That makes most sense to me.

>>>Also, what is the plan for fireworks on the 4th?<<<

We watch them and go oooo ahhhhhh?

More importantly, who wants to tailgate before the game?

Edgy DC
Jun 23 2005 09:42 AM

I'll make plans for the third and hope the majority can come.

Let me know who's coming in this thread and I'll e-mail you information about time, directions, weaponry...

I think I have a good slot to watch the works from in Georgetown. Problem with G-Town, though, is usually parking. Let me think on it.

ScarletKnight41
Jun 23 2005 09:47 AM

The Third works for me - let me know how to arm the kids.

Get your thinking cap on - we wanna watch fireworks with the Pool!

When you're e-mailing, PLMK what I can bring to the festivities.

Do I need to bring my gun? I hate crossing state lines with my gun.

Fed Ex it to me, and I'll leave it in your hotel room.

Homeland security has probably already flagged this thread.

Fed Exing a shot gun to Washington DC sounds a little risky.

Isn't the watching of the fireworks done on a big grassy area where people
congregate and hopefully can get to without having to drive? Trying to get
around, find parking, and then all meet in a strange city doesn't sound too
promising. Now if we could all jump on a train from somewhere near the
hotel that sounds a whole lot more accomadating. I know nothing, just
thinking out loud.

Edgy DC
Jun 23 2005 12:36 PM

What you're talking about is a mass of humanity on the National Mall. It's just oft a little tough to handle the human density there.

KC
Jun 23 2005 12:40 PM

No human density for me, thank you.

Maybe we can sneak up to the roof of the hotel.

MFS62
Jun 23 2005 02:00 PM

Check out the Old Post Office Tower.
Its a few blocks away from the main plaza and if they'll b eopen that night (not sure what time they close) you'll get a great view of the fireworks from there.

Its now a tourist attraction with an upscale food court on the street level.

Its walking distance from the Air and Space Museum, on th eother side of the green.

ScarletKnight41
Jun 24 2005 01:15 PM

Mid-afternoon for us. D-Dad arranged the 8-year-old All Stars tournament schedule so that Mini Knight doesn't have a game that day (he was originally scheduled to have a 2 pm game on the third, but D-Dad wasn't having any tournament interfere with the Pool gathering so he worked out a trade).

We're set. Arriving in town Saturday, seeing the relatives, then checking into the hotel Sunday, staying till Wed. am. Whatever you're up for...

OK, alright.

Here's what I'm thinking:

Casa d'Edgy on the third. Drinks, music, dancing, dining off of paper plates.

Fourth is the ballgame. Tailgate at 11, get dehydrated, and the game is at one. We get out of the park at 4:30-ish, giving peeps a chance to wash up and re-hydrate. We can dine together or separate, someplace greasy probably, but meet in Georgetown. Cha and I have a few places walkable from there we think would be OK to view the works. Fireworks start at about nine.

If you do want to dine together, Sequoia (pictured) is a nice affordable place on the G-Town waterfront. It's got indoor and outdoor dining and accommodates large parties.

How many are we talking about? At the game and potentially for dinner? Who's bringing cars? We're the proud temporary operators of 1992 Toyota Tercel (vroom!), so we can try to be porters of peoples.

If you're not into dining together (we may have had enough Pooling by then), we can meet at the hotel.

E-mail me your digits at edgydc@yahoo.com, and I'll send you ours.

ScarletKnight41

Jun 27 2005 12:07 AM

I got a long e-mail from a fellow SABR-dude for those of you who might be in town on the second.

I will be in Washington D.C. and Baltimore during this coming week to sign books and discuss them with anyone who shows up when I’m signing at local bookstores. (See the schedule below.)

I’ve got two new books out this year, one of them – “Wrong Side of the Wall” – is especially of interest to SABR members. It’s the biography of Ralph “Blackie” Schwamb who in the mid-1940s was one of the greatest baseball prospects in the country. Scouts were comparing him with Bob Feller. He was signed by the St. Louis Browns in 1946. At the same time that he was working his way up into the majors – joining the Browns in Washington D.C. to start against the Senators in July, 1948 – he was working in the off season in Los Angeles as a gangster. In 1949 he committed a murder, was caught and sentenced to life in prison. During the 1950s he became famous in baseball circles, compiling a remarkable pitching record for his prison teams against surprisingly tough competition. He was paroled in 1960 and came very close at the age of 34 to making a comeback. It is a fascinating and at times very strange story – sort of a true crime / sports biography; a baseball noir.

Here’s what some other people have said about “Wrong Side of the Road”:

“Given that our nation has watched a parade of ballplayers from Darryl Strawberry to Ken Caminiti march to the beat of their own self-destruction, it's useful to remember that there's nothing terribly modern about the spectacle of an athlete throwing it all away. Schwamb was a gifted righthander who pitched only a dozen games for the St. Louis Browns before being jailed for the brutal murder of a Long Beach, Calif., doctor in 1949. He was also a legman for the notorious gangster Mickey Cohen. Stone, whose uncle played in a semipro league against Schwamb, hoped to discover "how someone [like Schwamb] with so much right in his life could go so utterly wrong."

“Stone found the answer not in the rough-and-tumble world of the 1940s minor league circuit, which he vividly evokes, nor in the even rougher, more sordid world of organized crime in L.A. Rather, he discovered it in a broken-down old man he encountered living in a metal-slab-sided house in Lancaster, Calif. For four days Schwamb told Stone colorful yarns about his tragic, booze-soaked life. But on the fifth day, when Stone confronted Schwamb about the night he beat Dr. Donald Buge to death with his fists, Schwamb replied with a flood of tears. Then, collecting himself, he told Stone to "get the hell out of here before I [mess] you up." Clearly Blackie Schwamb was doomed to destruction for a simple reason: He couldn't find the courage to look at his reflection in the mirror.” – Sports Illustrated

"Blackie Schwamb's story is classic tragedy--flawed, physically brilliant, unable to deal with his demons. This is not a "sports" story, it is Eric Stone's brilliant study of a flawed man with a great talent who had such a talent that he started against Bob Feller, went to The Mob and ended up pitching in prison leagues. Stone weaves the life of this tragic figure against the tapestry of the lifeline of both L.A.and The Mob. It is brilliant, chilling and real."
—Peter Gammons, three-time National Sportscasters and

Sportswriters Association National Sportswriter of the Year, ESPN Baseball Tonight studio analyst

"Eric Stone's riveting account of Blackie Schwamb's great baseball talent and equally great character defects is so much more than a sports story. It is a fascinating trip along a life on the edge, in and out of trouble, golden opportunities and missed chances. Damon Runyon would have been proud to tell the tale of Blackie."
—Tom Brokaw, longtime NBC anchorman and best selling author.

"Eric Stone... does a brilliant job recounting the tragic turns of Schwamb's life. Of all the baseball books coming out this spring, this is the one I couldn't put down."
—John Curtis, The San Diego Union Tribune

"Possibly one of the most disturbing baseball biographies ever written."
—USA Today Sports Weekly

"Baseball rarely edges into noir, but this compelling biography by Eric Stone reads as if it had been filmed in black and white in the golden age of film noir Hollywood. Mesmerized by the waste of it all, yet tempted to hope because of his talent, we follow the story of a brilliant but flawed player, Blackie Schwamb, whose career was derailed through the tragic consequences of gangland connections."
—Kevin Starr, University Professor in History, University of Southern California, California State Librarian Emeritus, author of "Coast of Dreams: California on the Edge, 1990-2003" and the other six volumes of the "Americans and the California Dream" series.

I also have another book out at the moment. It’s a detective thriller called, “The Living Room of the Dead.” It’s set in Hong Kong, Macau and Vladivostok, Russia and based on a true story that I know from my years working as a journalist in Asia.

Here’s what some other people have said about “The Living Room of the Dead”:

"The Living Room of the Dead is a stylish, fresh take on classic noir themes. You won't soon forget Eric Stone's vivid depictions of Macau and Vladivostok -- or the sad, doomed characters who think they're simply passing through."
—Laura Lippman, winner of the Edgar, Agatha, Shamus, Anthony and Nero Wolfe awards for her Tess Monaghan series of novels, the most recent of which is "By a Spider’s Thread" and also author of "Every Secret Thing," her first stand-alone novel.

"Auspicious debut thriller by a former journalist who knows the exotic locales whereof he writes: the story is original and compelling, a page-turner with the spare, relentless style of Dennis Lehane or Michael Connelly."
—John Farris, bestselling author of the classic thrillers "The Fury" and "The Fury and the Terror" among others.

"Chandler and Hammett come to life in contemporary Macau. Exotic, dangerous, deadly, fun. The first book of a Ray Sharp series. Let's hope there will be many more."
—Allan Folsom, New York Times bestselling author of "The Day After Tomorrow", "The Day of Confession" and his latest thriller "The Exile".

"What a first novel - exotic in setting, expert in the telling, and exciting from first page to last. A unique and compelling novel in every respect."
—Ed Gorman, Shamus award winning author of the Sam McCain mysteries, the most recent of which is "Everybody’s Somebody’s Fool".

You can read excerpts of both books and learn more about me at my website: www.ericstone.com

I will be in the Washington D.C. and Baltimore area at a number of local bookstores. I am not having any formal events, but there are several stores that have ordered large quantities of my books and I will be at those stores at specifc times to sign the books and sit around over coffee with anyone who shows up and wants to talk about them. Here’s my proposed schedule:

Edgy DC
Jun 27 2005 10:28 AM

OK, more fun than going to book events to celebrate biographies of obscure baseball figures might be the new cheetah cubs unveiled at the national zoo.

We're expecting relatively low homoditity for next weekend, with temps in the mid-80s.

Tailgate or bust

Never miss a tailgate party -- especially when KC is involved. I'll have to find a local store to buy some brats morning of the game, along with some ice for drinks. I'll bring mini-grill as well as chairs and table, KC. Also ingredients for blue drinks (any preference between blue Marguaritas or Electric Lemonade??). I have blue cups and blue and orange napkins. Usual stuff. Also banners to mark off tailgate location. Unfortunately, probably not room in the van to pack the shelter.

Agree that indoor dining after the game (for those who can still eat) would be best before outdoors again for fireworks.

Looking forward!!

KC
Jun 28 2005 05:39 PM

Well this will be a toned down tailgate party by Jets standards. Plus, we rented
a car for the week so we have less towing capacity. I'm not risking being able to shop.
Bringing a cooler for food, one cooler for beverages ... keep adding ice.

Johnny Dickshot
Jun 28 2005 09:32 PM

I'd bring the Chinese Box but I got no way to bring it home. Would be great at a Jets game though.

Anyhow, I believe July 4 is not only Independence Day but Pedro Day.

Diamond Dad
Jun 29 2005 08:38 AM
Pedro's rotation

He'll probably pitch tomorrow (Thursday) and then again on Tuesday the 5th. Willie will want to give him the extra day of rest created by the off day on Monday.

Too bad -- Pedro for a day game followed by fireworks would have been reminiscent of 1986, when we saw Gooden pitch a day game at Shea and then went to Battery Park for the big fireworks marking the 100th birthday of the Statue of Liberty. (Or was that '85???)

KC
Jun 29 2005 09:01 AM

The Chinese box would be good for December games. We could charge
people for ten minute heating sessions.

That was a great July fourth.

And the celebration! Well, let me just say that it remains the only time I've seen Sam Donaldson and Neil Diamond in sort of the same place. I was shocked.

That was a great day

Thanks, KC -- it was '86. Summer of magic. Gooden bested Ryan, then spectacular fireworks over the Hudson River. (And we didn't even know then that the Mets/Astros would meet later in the NLCS)

This July 4th won't have the pitching matchup of that day, but hopefully the outcome and quality of fireworks will approach '86.

Scarlett, my son is 16 and my daughter is 14.

For all of those staying at the Jury Hotel I thought I would pass on the following. We are actually going to be leaving tomorrow evening so we can do sight seeing on Saturday. When I went to look for a hotel for tomorrow night, I found that rooms were still available at the Jury. The kicker is that the rooms are available for $99 a night through the weekend, which is substantially better than the price they gave us in February. I called to inquire about the difference and was advised that the $125 price extended to the Crane Pool Forum was a corporate rate. I explained that we were not a company, but rather a crazed bunch of Mets fans coming to see a baseball game. Needless to say we have all now been kicked out of the hotel...just kidding on that point. I was told that they could not change the rate, but I could book a new reservation for the lower price and upon receiving a confirmation call and cancel the initial reservation. I took their advice and did just that.

If anyone is interested in getting the same rooms for a better rate, check on the web (both Orbitz & Hotels.com had the lower rates) to see if the company you generally use had a better rate. I was able to add Friday night to my new reservation for less than the total had initially been for Sat., Sun., and Mon. nights.

Look forward to seeing everyone.

Have fun at the game this weekend guys and girls. Wish I could have made it.

I'll be watching tho, so you all better be in bright orange and blue so I can locate you. . .I suggest you all go out those bright and, some would say, hideous batting practice jerseys so you stick out like a fist of sore thumbs.

Greetings from the nations capital...

The southern contingent rolled into DC around 9:00 PM on Friday. Found the hotel without too much trouble, missed one turn just a few blocks from the hotel, but otherwise smooth sailing and the traffic was surprisingly light.

Spent yesterday touring Mount Vernon, cruising the Potomac River and taking in the sights Arlington National Cemetary. Will be heading out to the presidential and war monuments/memorials shortly. Should return to the hotel around 3-4 PM this afternoon. To clean up before heading to Edgy's this evening.

Look forward to seeing everyone again. To those staying at the hotel, we're in Rm. 429, please give us a ring so we can organize our travel plans for the evening. Safe travels everyone.

Just got in from a hectic day of sight seeing. I feel like I've walked enough to almost be at Shea. Had a fun time taking in the sights of the Tidal Basin and downtown monument area.

An awful lot has changed since I last toured DC as a teenager. A fun time has been had by all and the holiday weekend is still young.

I hope everyone has a safe and wonderful July 4th holiday.

Dinner at Edgy and Cha Cha's place was a lot of fun. We were there with Kase, KB, Rockin Doc and the Dockettes, and Mr. & Mrs. Dickshot. Good food and lots of laughs for all in attendance. Tomorrow we tailgate at RFK before the game.

Missing the rest of you - wish you were here!

It's both interesting and yet completely bizarre that we can get the play-by-play of everyone's trip to DC. Wish we could be there. Perhaps next year. We went out for ice cream last night, and I almost got a Nationals helmet sundae to be with you in solidarity... then I realized that I hat the Nationals (no pun intended), so I got it in a regular dish instead.

ScarletKnight41
Jul 04 2005 09:02 AM

So here's what the rest of you missed.

We arrived at the hotel aroune 3:30 (I guestimated our arrival time very well). KB was in the lobby, so after unpacking we met up with her and Kase at the Irish bar. I called Rockin Doc, so he joined us as well. The Dockettes and Knight kids hit it off from the start, finding common interests in Harry Potter and comic books to bond over. Eventually the Dickshots joined us, as well as one of Johnny's high school friends. After a time, we organized ourselves in the lobby to tackle the mean streets of DC and head over to Edgy and Cha Cha's place.

Dinner was lovely, with great food and a lot of story telling. I was laughing so hard at one point that I could barely breathe - if you think these guys are entertaining on the internet, you really need to see them in person! Cha Cha graciously agreed to play the piano so that we could let the group see that my daughter really does have a great singing voice. Tattoos were compared, and others threatened to show off moles. Eventually we headed back to the hotel, and were able to find our way back successfully.

We're now about 45 minutes away from congregating in the lobby so we can caravan over to RFK for the much anticipated tailgate party. After that it's dinner at that place Edgy found that has pumpkin pecan pie (with that on the menu, nothing else matters) and fireworks at night.

Hope that the 4th is a good one for all of you. I'm sure you'll hear more from us later.

We missed Cooby. In fact, we all mentioned her when we saw Carlos Baerga in the Washington lineup and again when Baerga made a good catch in foul territory.

So I want to hear the report on the dinner last night and the fireworks in DC. Ms. Tiger and I had fun at our friends' cookout and then flew home seeing fireworks displays in communities across the eastern seaboard. The fireworks themselves looked just like little cottonballs from above, but it was neat to see several towns' fireworks all at once. It was also fun to fly over places like Brooklyn and Queens where it looked like every street corner and rooftop was exploding with color.

Our family returned from a fun filled holiday weekend in the nation's capital a few hours ago. It was a great gathering filled with good food and even better fellowship.

Edgy and Cha Cha were great hosts for the group. They found us a great hotel in a nice neighborhood and helped to ensure that everything flowed smoothly for the group.

We had a wonderful gathering at Edgy and Cha Cha's apartment on Sunday evening. The food was wonderful and the beer was plentiful. Combine that with the company of some great Mets fans and you have the makings of a memorable evening. Cha Cha graciously agreed to accompany Scarlett's daughter for a beautiful rendition of I Dreamed a Dream from Les Miserables. Both performed flawlessly and it was a treat for all in attendance.

The little Knights and the Dockettes hit it off very well, as if they had known each other for years, which was nice to see. It made the gathering more enjoyable for them since most of them (other than my 16 year old son) seemed to find the discussions of the adults rather boring.

Monday morning we formed a Mets motorcade to RFK for a tailgating party. KC and Diamond Dad manned the grills expertly and no one left the lot hungry. Cold beer and blue margaritas were available in abundance. The three plus hours of the tailgate party seemed to pass too quickly as the stories flowed throughout the morning. Willets and his fiancee (Ms Tiger) joined the group midway through the festivities. Shortly before game time, ABG stopped by for a surprise cameo appearance. He had been tailgating with friends elsewhere in the lot and somehow figured out who we were amid all the cars and people.

Soon it was time to break up the party and head into the stadium for the game. I unfortunately had difficulties with an overly zealous security guard that decided my camera was not allowed. He stated that the telephoto lens was too large and told me that "professional cameras" were not allowed. So I had to return to the car to change to a smaller lens before I could enter the stadium. I unfortunately missed the Mets top of the first, but at least I was able to enjoy another cold beer on the return trip across the lot.

We cheered the Mets throughout their come from behind victory. We even shouted down Screech (the Nationals "pigeon" mascot) when he tried to rouse the lethargic Washington fans in our section. It was nice to see that the Mets fans were present in abundance throughout the stadium. It was even nicer to see the Mets earn a win.

After the final out was recorded and the victory sealed, we hurried to our cars. We returned to the hotel to prepare for our group dinner reservation along the waterfront in Georgetown. The food was wonderful and afterward the fireworks display helped to cap a great day of fellowship.

I would like to thank Edgy and Cha Cha for being such wonderful hosts in organizing this outing and I would urge others to consider attending, if at all possible, the next time the CPF plans a group gathering.

I can't believe this happened to you and the reason being that not only was I allowed in with a 300mm lens on my digital SLR but someone in the stands a few sections over from us on the lower level without a press pass had a huge professional lens. Had to be at least a 1000mm lens with a monopod too. I assume he knew someone to get in and sit in the regular seats with that but he didn't seem to have any kind of special I.D. and I looked because he stuck out so much where he was sitting.

We ended up with great seats thanks to someone who gave us his season tix for the game. So I wandered around the lower level periodically to take pics which you can check out here if you want: http://www.aplaceformyphotos.com/photos.php?cat=18.

I got in there towards the end of Mets BP and I have to say while I haven't always liked everything that Pedro had done on the mound, he gets a huge thumbs up from me because he clearly gets it when it comes to the fans. I don't know what he does at Shea or anywhere else but yesterday he was signing balls and throwing them into the crowd during BP. Sometimes it seems like a lot of players would rather not be bothered with tthe fans - not Pedro. More players should do as he, and others who do similar things, do.

Anyway, it was a hot but fun game!

That's really unfortunate. I understand the need to enforce rules but they're got to apply to everyone or no one, not be dependant on what team you support. I was wearing a shirt with a very small Yankees logo - I wonder what might have happened if that was seen - off to the dungeon for me!

After being greeted at RFK with the sight of "Mets Suck" t-shirts on the way into the ballpark accompanied by M-E-T-S Suck Suck Suck chanting, I wouldn't be surprised that RD was discriminated against because of his team of choice.

This town has had a team for 15 minutes (after losing two other teams within a decade and not having a team at all for 35 years) - where the hell do they have the standing to trash talk anyone?

As obnoxious as the MFY fans are, at least there's a time-established rivalry behind the hostility. Getting it in DC comes totally out of left field (sorry Frayed Knot....). I've been to every major league park and this is the first time I have encountered this kind of nonsense as a visiting fan.
