2004 3rd round draft pick Gaby Hernandez pitched a no-hitter (2 BBs) to lead Hagerstown to a 1-0 decision over West Virginia. The win also clinched the 1st-half pennant in the South Atlantic League for the 42-28 Suns. Hernandez is now 5-1, 2.32 in 14 starts.

Very impressive by Hernandez, looks like we have some good kids down on the farm..two of mine are starting to hit a bit, Concepcion and Burt Jr.Looks like they have a good pitching staff , who's the kid Sanchez who is 10-2 in 14 games with a 3.18 ERA?.. Game Recap Gabriel Hernandez Throws No-Hitter, Suns Win Sunday's game began with the Hagerstown Suns needing to win to ensure at least a share of the 1st half championship in the South Atlantic League's North Division. It ended with Gabriel Hernandez under a pile of his teammates celebrating his first complete game no-hitter. Behind the masterful performance by the 19-year-old right-hander, the Suns beat the West Virginia Power 1-0, and guaranteed themselves the chance to play for an automatic playoff berth. With Lexington's win today, the Suns game on June 25th will be the tie-breaker to determine the first-half champion. The Suns and Lexington Legends were tied in the standings going into today's final first-half contest. Just before Gaby threw his first pitch at 1:37pm, he used his right foot to scratch out the word "Dad" on the back of the pitcher's mound. He would go on to pitch a complete game no-hitter while surrendering 2 walks and striking out 6. Greg Kloosterman pitched well for the Power, allowing just one run off of an RBI double by Jim Burt that scored Grant Psomas from first base in the second inning. Dante Brinkley played a fantastic game for the Suns, picking up 2 hits and securing the final fly-ball out off of the bat of William Lewis. The no-hitter was the first for the Hagerstown Suns since Clay Hensley threw a perfect game in a 7-inning contest on May 3, 2003 versus the Kannapolis Intimidators. 2,301 fans witnessed the feat on Father's Day at Municipal Stadium. The Suns are off tomorrow, and begin second-half play on Tuesday, June 21 at the Lakewood Blueclaws. The Suns next home game is Saturday, June 25 against the Lexington Legends. The funny thing is Gaby is putting up similar numbers at the same age in the same league as Scott Kazmir did, and Yusmeiro Petit put up better numbers than both of them down there.

The Suns won the playoff for the first half title last night 9-4. Gaby Hernandez 5 IP 6 H 4 ER 2 BB 6 K, Won Grant Psomas 2-2 HR 3 RBI

Yeah, that's a weird (but probably smart) system they have there. Hagerstown & Lexington (Houston) tied for the 1st half championship. The rule when that happens is that the first regularly scheduled meeting of the 2nd half between those teams acts as the 1st half tie-breaker. What was cool is that it turned out to fall on both teams' best pitcher's turn. Most - if not all - of the minor leagues use that 1st half/2nd half champions thing because rosters change so often.

BA: Signed out of the Dominican as a 16-year-old, the Mets' Carlos Gomez is putting together an impressive SAL campaign. The speedster went 3-for-3 last night for the second straight game while stealing his SAL-leading 43rd base. The Hagerstown outfielder has seen his batting average improve each month this season and his hitting .275/.320/.400. The 19-year-old has just 14 walks in 280 at-bats and will need to improve on that to make himself a true force as a leadoff hitter. Sounds like another Mets leadoff hitter.

Suns Advance to Championship, Beat Delmarva 9-7 The Hagerstown Suns made it back-to-back wins over Delmarva to propel themselves into the South Atlantic League Championship Series against the Kannapolis Intimidators, winning 9-7 on Saturday night. For the second night in a row the Suns jumped out to a 5-1 lead, but this time they had to hold on after a furious comeback by Delmarva. Dante Brinkley came up huge after taking the place of Carlos Gomez. Gomez injured his groin in the game last night and the Suns turned to All-Star Brinkley to fill the void. Brinkley answered by scoring the game's first run and then blasting a two-run homerun. The Shorebirds kept themselves within shouting distance, avoiding the big inning by Hagerstown and scratching out one run in four of the first six frames. Then the second-half champs made their move in the eighth inning, scoring three runs off of Rafael Cova to cut the lead to one run. The Suns would add an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth with a leadoff double by Matt Fisher and an RBI groundout by Grant Psomas. Marcelo Perez earned the save by getting Jason Fransz to fly out to deep center field with a runner at first base and the Suns celebrated their series victory. Hagerstown collected 14 hits, nine of them for extra-bases. The Suns also turned four doubleplays and scored in six of their eight at-bats. Hagerstown will now face the Kannapolis Intimidators in a best-of-five-game series with the first two games at Municipal Stadium. I went to see some Sun in Game One of their championship series against Kannapolis last night. I'll report further on it tomorrow. Suffice to say they lost. But they evened it up tonight.

I had a fun time watching a game here this summer. It's an old ballpark, but it has it's charm the way old stadiums have. Mr. Hagerstown gave me the low-down on the joint. The two biggest days in the history of the stadium: jim palmer pitched a rehab start there and willie mays played as a sally league opponent there. When you visit higerstown, you have to stop by antietam. It ws a famous civil war battle in 1862. Many died at dunker church, the cornstalks, the bloody lane, and burnside's folly, the bridge that he HAD to take crossing the antietam creek. Mr. Hagerstown also pointed out the head of the hagerstown suns fan club and tweety, the number one suns fan. tweety likes his beer. you can hear him in the first row, behind the plate, tweeting with a beer in his paw. get the head of the Hagerstown Suns fan club on the forum NOW! We saw hagerstown take a 5-0 lead and lose to lake county, but it was fun seeing some old cyclones.

RHP & 2003 3rd round draft pick Gaby Hernandez is the only Hagerstown Sun to make BA's Top-20 prospects of the South Atlantic League (#18). http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/minors/05league20s/sal.html From the Q&A session: Q: Gaby Hernandez seemed to have a remarkable season and has the stuff and the poise to be an impact player. Why so late in the list? A - John Manuel: ... he doesn't have impact stuff, according to the scouts I talked to. He has good stuff, but impact stuff to me means two plus pitches. I haven't heard that on Hernandez, either when he was in high school in South Florida or as a pro. What I have heard, though, is good--pitchability, solid fastball velocity, solid curveball that could be better if thrown with more conviction, and good makeup. Gaby sounds like he has a chance to really contribute for the Mets down the line, and I think he's a good No. 3-4 starter down the line. They also mentioned OFer Carlos Gomez was close and would be in the 20-30 range.
