Never tasted Tim Horton's, but my Canadian friends who have visited the States and tasted the US donuts say Tim's are the best. And I believe they will be opening over 500 shoppes in the US by year's end. Up here in CT, we had a local chain called Bess Eaton that made great ones. Tim has bought out that chain. Can't wait. Later

Mike's Doughnuts in Everett, MA. They redefined what doughnut means to me. MSF62, I remember Bess Eaton, although I can't remember ever getting a doughnut there. Is Liz Sue Bagels still around? They were quite tasty and had a few shops around Fairfield Co.

It all depends on the mood I'm in, but I went with Krispy Kreme. A little too sweet, perhaps, but delicious nonetheless. I'm also fond of DD french crullers and Enteimman's chocolate donuts that have been in the freezer.

I'm a Dunkin man, we have Krispy Kreme at work and I'm not a fan,I suppose I'm loyal to a brand, but the local bakery is hard to beat.

Bizarelly enough, there were basically no donuts in Minnesota, which drove me nuts. I finally found a place in the above-ground walkways of downtown Minneapolis that had cake donuts with various broken-up candybars on them. It was awesome. Looked like it was straight from the Simpsons. KK are still better, though.

Dunkin' Donuts was a lot better when they baked the donuts on-site, prior to their corporate strategy of going head-to-head with Starbucks in the coffee market.

Never been much of a donut guy - and I don't think I ever had a Krispy Kreme until about a year and a half ago. I was doing an organized lengthy bike ride where they had food/water/rest stops set up at various intervals. For the most part the grub was the usual high-carb stuff - energy bars, bagels w/PB, fruit, etc - that necc for multi-hour rides. Then, at the final food stop - at a point where many of the riders would never reach since there were turnoffs for those opting for shorter options - they had boxes of KKs among the other stuff on a table. I 'bout near did a swan-dive into those things. mmmmm ... calories!

I had to go with the local guys, Krispy Kreme. There is just wonderful about watching your donut roll under a waterfall of glaze while they're still piping hot. Then the KK employee hands you your coffee and fresh donut just as soon as your donut comes to the end of the conveyor. It doesn't get any fresher than that.

The name "Krispy Kreme" turns me off. I hate the bizarre spelling. And I don't think that cream is supposed to be crispy. If it is, there's something terribly wrong.

Shipley's glazed donuts are like sex is supposed to be--always better than you remembered. Currently they are not permitted on my diet, but someday, I'll be able to have another one and it'll be better than I'm remembering it. It always is.

I just gave Tim Horton's a vote, even though I'm not much of a donut guy either (I just look like one). They're all pretty evil. I remember when KK first started moving north, talking about an IPO, etc. and there were the typical stories of ex-pat southerners promising us what great stuff we'd get (hot donuts ALL THE TIME) and real southerners worried KK would lose its uniqueness as a result. Sure enuf, the real southerners were right, as KK to me has become another ubiquitous commodity consumer-packaged-good available anywhere and hardly ever hot and fresh. Plus they had crooks in the accounting office. Totally jumped the shark. Tim Horton's a few years back was bought by a heartless corporation -- Wendy's -- and that's fueling its needless march into the US. The one thing I will say for Tim Horton's over Dunkin Donutz is that their basic retail box and logo are much more attractive than DD with its balloony fonts and puketastic pink/orange/maroon design. Tim Horton was a real hockey player:

News of the Donut World City inspector follows nose to Dunkin' Donuts insect violations October 19, 2005 BY JANET RAUSA FULLER, Staff Reporter The fruit fly up the nose was the last straw. When inspectors with the city's Dumpster Task Force paid a visit Monday to the Dunkin' Donuts-Togo's-Baskin Robbins store at 801 W. Diversey, they were greeted by swarms of fruit flies in the food prep and cake decorating areas, on the walls and on dishes, towels and utensils, officials said. "In this case, a fruit fly actually went up one inspector's nose," said Matt Smith, spokesman for Chicago's Department of Streets and Sanitation. The store was promptly shut down Monday afternoon -- for the second time this year -- for insect infestation and poor housekeeping. Store was closed in spring, too "Apparently, there's a new owner but the same old problems," Smith said. In March, the store was ordered closed after inspectors saw fruit flies throughout the kitchen, and a kitchen sink, doorknobs and outside garbage bins all heavily encrusted with grease and waste. Monday's visit was prompted by a complaint phoned into the city's 311 line, Smith said. "We didn't find any evidence of rodents here, but that goes to show you whatever compromises the health and safety of the food, and thus the customers, is something we take seriously. It doesn't have to have four legs for us to do that," he said. Inspectors will return to the Lincoln Park store today for a re-inspection, Smith said. Woman returns bag of full of cash to Dunkin' Donuts October 19, 2005 SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine --Dunkin' Donuts employees were thanking their good luck Tuesday after a woman who was accidentally given a bag with $771 in cash instead of the bagel with cream cheese she had ordered turned in the money. Pati Fine of Readfield picked up her order at the drive-through window around 10 a.m. at the Dunkin' Donuts on Broadway. She then drove to a spot on the waterfront to eat her snack, but when she opened the bag she found a bunch of bills instead of a bagel, police said. Fine took the money to the police department, where officers counted out the cash. Officers then brought the money to the doughnut shop, where they found frantic employees who thought they might lose their jobs over the lost cash. Doughnut shop employee Marion Silvestre said a worker had placed the money in a bag, but had accidentally left it on the counter instead of locking it away for safekeeping. Another employee then passed the bag to Fine, thinking it was her order.

Our local Price Chopper makes great donuts. There's a Dunkin Donuts in the same mall (in fact, those are the only two stores in the mall) but I go to Price Chopper instead.

This is fairly old news, and I don't remember what parks serve them (not Shea obviously) but there is a bacon-cheesburger out there being served on two Krispy Kreme donuts instead of a bun.

MK and I got Krispy Kremes at Penn Station on our way home from Shea yesterday. It had been a while since I had had one - I had forgotten just how much I love them.
