Let's finally finish this thing.

Yancy Street Gang

I'VE LOOKED AT MAZZ FROM BOTH SIDES NOW
A song about Lee Mazzilli
With apologies to Joni Mitchell

Close-fit clothes and wavy hair
And basket catches filled with flair
Great expectations everywhere
I looked at Mazz that way.

But now he's just a Yankee bum
One of George's favorite sons
I oft' forget the good he's done
The years get in the way.

I've looked at Mazz from both sides now
From Bronx and Queens and still somehow
The young Mazzilli I recall
Wasn't what I thought at all.

Thrills and chills and joy so real
That Seattle homer made me feel
Those years before he snitched on Zeile
I looked at Mazz that way.

But now he's just a friend of Joe
Player loyalties come and go
Although we care, they don't, you know
They're in it for the pay.

I've looked at Mazz from both sides now
A Met, a Yank, and still somehow
Those wide-eyed days that I recall
I really didn't know Mazz at all.

Years of cheers and feeling proud
To say "Let's Go Mets" really loud
Dreams and screams from within the crowd
I watched the Mets that way

I'm still a fan, that'll never change
They're still my Mets though their names are strange
With innocence lost, perspective's gained
I see them a new way

I've looked at Mazz from both sides now
From Bronx and Queens and still somehow
The young Mazzilli I recall
Wasn't what I thought at all.
I've looked at Mazz from both sides now
A Met, a Yank, and still somehow
Those wide-eyed days that I recall
I really didn't know Mazz at all.

A song in which Rusty dons his tie-dyed shirt and sings of his final (1985) season:

STAUBIN’

Eatin’
Got my bib tucked in
Then watchin’ til I get my chance
Later, have a glass of wine,
Just keep Staubin’ on.

Gone are the days of flashing marquees out on Main Street
Montreal, New York, Detroit and it all was a great streak
Now typical days wrapped up in a typical daydream
Just pinch-hit and see what tomorrow brings.

Dallas, got some soft ice cream
Houston, too close to New Orleans
New York’s where I make my green
But just don’t let me field, oh no.

Most of the time I even forget ‘bout my old glove
Most of the time I’m sittin’ and waiting to hit
One of these days I know I’m gonna be fielding
Hope that the ball could ever be finding my mitt.

Battin’
Got a one-base hit
Pinch runner
‘Cause now I run like shit
Sometimes it seems I hardly work
But they still keep me around.

Sometimes the lights are shining on me
Other times I can barely swing.
Lately it occurs to me
How a long, hot bath would be.

What in the world ever became of Foster?
He’s lost his sparkle, you know he isn’t the same
Leavin’ the Reds, acting all mean and profane,
All a friend can say is ain’t it a shame?

Burgers
Made of buffalo
Taste better
When they’re cooked real slow
Take time and have it wrapped to-go
And just keep Staubin’ on.

Sittin’ and starin’ out of the hotel window
Drinkin’ my wine and eating filet mignon
I’d like to get some sleep before I travel
But if you’ve got some cheesecake, I guess you’ve gotta come in.

Walkin’
Down on Bleecker Street
Fans swarm
They want to be near me
Knocked down
It get’s to wearin’ thin
They just won’t let me be.

I’m sick of hangin’ round, give me that apple
I’m sick of travellin’, now I’ve got a restaurant
I guess they can’t blame a guy for tryin’,
Remember that I am still called Le Grande Orange.

Sometimes the lights are shining on me
Other times I can barely swing.
Lately it occurs to me
How a long, hot bath would be.

Quittin’
I’m a goin’ home.
Whoa whoa baby, back where I belong.
Back home, gnaw on some prime rib bones
And get back Staubin’ on.

sharpie - name that tune!

I thought the tie-dye reference would give it away, but it's "Truckin'" by the Grateful Dead.

classic stuff

Really, really great stuff, both of you. I can see that you used the break to your best advantage.

Kudos all around.

It's "trucking from the Greatful Dead.

A worthy final round matchup. Brilliant jobs by both of you.

Have to think on my vote a little bit.

Great stuff. But I cast my vote with YSG based on an overall tighter story and moving commentary on what it means to be a fan (sniff...)

Sharpie, had I been a more efficient writer I would have put up my ZZ Top parody "Everyone's crazy about that rust-haired man" instead of my Benny Agbayani song, but you've treated your Rusty Staub acquisition well.

I'm voting for the parody based on the song by an artist(s) associated with Woodstock.

Hmm... I'll need to think on this one.

Good job by both, but that's what decided it for me.

Gotcha.

A worthy final round. An excellent job by both competitors.

I get one "aw, shucks" out of Yancy, he's gonna get such a slap.

Yancy Street Gang
Dec 19 2005 01:38 PM

How about "gawrsh?"

sharpie
Dec 19 2005 03:07 PM

It was 4-4. Now it's 12-4. The first 8 voters thought each were thoughtful, balanced voters, the next 8 are bandwagoneers. At least that's how I choose to see it.

Yancy Street Gang
Dec 19 2005 03:29 PM

Now it's 12-5. Must've been an anti-bandwagoneer.

Zvon
Dec 19 2005 03:35 PM

you guys make it damn tuff to vote.
Those both are classic and hilarious.

The Both Sides Now one gets my vote, cuz it left no line unspoofed.

Edgy DC
Dec 19 2005 03:36 PM

The guidelines for these songs hurts Yancy here. "Both Sides Now" would've worked even better if the second and third verses were about other Mets-turned-Yankees.

I really don't know Bragg...
At all...

I really don't know Allen Watson...
At all...

Dec 19 2005 03:43 PM

It's 1-1 since the 8-vote bandwagoneer (some might call them sheep, but I don't) vote which suggest that the thoughtful, balanced people are back.

(on edit). I'm now Duffy Dyer. He was one of my guys and I did spend a little time on "Dyer Maker" but the title was better than the results.

How can you jump on the bandwagon of a 4-4 tie?

I don't like to read commentary till after I vote. So I didn't know what Sharpie's song was. It looked good, though, and it was tough, but knowing Yancy's tune swung my vote (oh and I wanted to lose to the winner, it would make losing go down better).

I cast my vote...a secret ballot, as always.

But it was tough. I loved both of these.

With two hours to go I am conceding to my opponent from Yancy Street. I'd like to thank my many supporters during this long journey and I hope to work with the Yancy Administration to move this great forum forward but I will also be there to give voice to the opposition should the much-feared "clobberin' time" arrive. I'd like to thank the Rolling Stones, Talking Heads, the Beatles and Yes for providing so much help during this campaign. As for the Grateful Dead, well...

I will be available for interviews in the green room.

Yancy Street Gang
Dec 20 2005 09:19 AM

I guess, at 18-6, it's looking pretty good for me, but I won't claim victory quite yet. Remembering the words of Lawrence Peter Berra, it ain't over till it's over.

And sharpie can still pull an Al Gore and revoke his concession. Are any of my 18 votes from Florida?

Yancy Street Gang
Dec 20 2005 11:14 AM

And I now claim victory, with a final score of 18-6.

As winner, is it my responsibility to call for a time for healing?

ScarletKnight41
Dec 20 2005 11:45 AM

I think so. It's your time to reach out and rebuild all of those bridges you burned during your ascent.

Oh, and congratulations Yancy.

I pointed out to MK how well you were doing last night, and reminded him that you were the one who offed me in Round 2. To which MK responded, "Yes, but he's really GOOD!"

Enjoy your championship lap. We expect to see a photo of you on a double decker bus driving through Japan :)

Yoo Hoo Shower?

What is the traditional method of celebrating victory? Yoo Hoo shower? Engraving the winner's name on the crystal goblet of victory? Winner buys the first round at next year's picnic at Virgil's?

C'mon, traditions aren't formed overnight. (Well, maybe sometimes)

Yancy Street Gang
Dec 21 2005 09:23 AM

I think a five-figure cash prize would make for a nice tradition.

Edgy DC
Dec 21 2005 09:41 AM

Well, if all the contestants put X dollars in the kitty (wherever that may be found), I'm sure we could purchase a perfectly adequate trophy.

Or a nice sandwich.

This forum needs a kitty.

Yancy Street Gang

19-7 now. People are still voting.

No trophy or sandwiches are necessary. I'm perfectly content with "bragging rights."

Which is why it's not funny. Right, Edgy?
