Sounds like they were just misunderstanding the newspaper article (bullpen thread) which seemed to speculate that either Heilman or Seo could go in a deal involving Baez.

Shirley I figured this thread title referred to the latest items from our pretend beatwriter friends assuriung us that the Mets would cough up half their starting lineup plus Milledge in a deal for Manny.

M&MD typically would jump all over this in favor of getting Baez because:
1) He was 7-7 in save opportunities against the Yankees this year, so Mike must think he's the second coming of Goose Gossage.
2) Baez is a name player, on a team other than the Mets, so he just HAS to be better than any young Met, right?

I really don't understand the hooplah behind Baez...The Indians basically gave up on him a couple years ago after having 10 blown saves and 9 losses in '03...and while he had 41 saves last season, he still had 4 losses and 8 blown saves...I'm not saying that he's a bad pitcher, but after seeing Heilman post all-star break, I think I'd rather see if Heilman is for real before giving him up for a reliever that seems to me to be as reliable as Bradon Looper...

Looper > Baez imo. though thats not an argument i care to bothergetting into.

Well, you made it.

Isn't Baez the reason Jon Heyman and I aren't speaking?

Heilman: Start me or trade me

BY JIM BAUMBACH
STAFF WRITER

December 31, 2005

Aaron Heilman has told the Mets on several occasions that if he is not going to be a starter in 2006, he wants to be traded, agent Mark Rodgers said Friday.

"He's been polite but persistent," Rodgers said. "He's enjoyed the Mets, the city and the people, but he can do the math. He knows right now there's no room for him. "

The Mets envisioned using Heilman mostly in a setup role, but they liked how he performed in 2005 as a pitcher who could be used in many roles.

As recently as the Mets' Christmas party, general manager Omar Minaya publicly said he views Heilman as an important part of the 2006 team in that sort of role, but Heilman's repeated trade requests figure to complicate the team's plans. The Mets likely would trade him only if it would benefit them.

Meanwhile, the Mets, according to several people familiar with the situation, have made progress in their talks with the Devil Rays regarding righthanded reliever Danys Baez. "It's a possibility, but it's also contingent on a few things that we're working on," D-Rays spokesman Rick Vaughn said. "It could possibly happen, but it also may not. "

If the Mets traded Heilman and acquired Baez, the Mets would get someone who could set up Billy Wagner and Heilman might get a chance to start. Baez, however, would likely have to be sold on accepting a lesser role in his walk year.

Baez, 28, had 41 saves in 49 chances, a 5-4 record and a 2.86 ERA in 72 1/3 innings last season. He will make $4 million in 2006.

The Devil Rays, under new ownership, have been looking to trade players near the end of their contracts and acquire younger talent. They are shopping Baez, outfielder Aubrey Huff and shortstop Julio Lugo.

According to Rodgers, the last time Heilman told Minaya about his desire to be a starter was just a few weeks ago, when the GM called Heilman after he returned from a successful stint starting in winter ball in the Dominican Republic. Rodgers said Heilman, who went 4-1 with a 2.27 ERA in six winter ball starts, told Minaya, "The reason why I went and played winter ball was to prove that I can start."

From the Daily News. It seems that if the Mets do in fact get Baez, he'll likely leave via free agency after the 2006 season. I'd hate to see them give up much at all for just one year of Danys Baez.

]4-way Manny frenzy

BY BILL MADDEN
and ANTHONY McCARRON
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITERS

Saturday, December 31st, 2005

The Mets have been engaged in ongoing talks with the Devil Rays about reliever Danys Baez, but, according to multiple baseball sources, those discussions could bloom into a blockbuster four-team trade scenario in which Manny Ramirez winds up at Shea and similarly disgruntled slugger Miguel Tejada lands in Boston.

According to sources, both the Red Sox and Orioles have resigned themselves to accommodating the trade requests of Ramirez and Tejada, who want off of their respective teams. But since the Orioles have signed Jeromy Burnitz to complete their outfield, they may not have a match with the Red Sox in a straight-up Tejada-for-Ramirez deal, so several baseball executives said they'd have to get other teams involved.

That's where the Mets and Devil Rays come in. The basics of the four-team deal that had the baseball executives buzzing yesterday and would appear to satisfy the needs of all four clubs would have Tejada and Tampa Bay's Joey Gathright going to the Red Sox to fill Boston's holes at shortstop and center field.

Ramirez and Baez would go to the Mets, giving them one of the game's best sluggers and a setup man. The Orioles would satisfy their need at shortstop by getting Julio Lugo from Tampa Bay and add pitching by getting Matt Clement from Boston and possibly Kris Benson from the Mets.

The Devil Rays, who have always been difficult to deal with, especially in complicated transactions, are seeking top prospects and young pitching and would be satisfied in that regard by getting third baseman Andy Marte from Boston and Jae Seo and Aaron Heilman from the Mets. In addition, the Mets would send Kaz Matsui to Tampa to give the D-Rays a stopgap shortstop replacement until prospect B.J. Upton is ready.

An executive with one of the teams called the four-team scenario far-fetched, but an official with another of the teams said he expected to broach such talks.

The Mets and GM Omar Minaya long have coveted Ramirez, a nine-time All-Star. Ramirez has said he wants to leave Boston and the Mets are one of the few clubs in baseball that could take on all or part of his monster salary - Ramirez is due $57 million over the next three seasons.

Money, of course, could complicate the deal. In addition to Ramirez's hefty price tag, Tejada is owed $48 million and part of a $12 million signing bonus for the next four years.

Independently, the Mets have been talking for weeks with the Devil Rays about Baez, who was 5-4 with a 2.86 ERA and 41 saves as a closer last season. Seo and Heilman have been mentioned as possible matches in a potential one-for-one deal, but two Mets sources said yesterday they would "absolutely" not part with Heilman for Baez.

However, if talks expand and include bringing Ramirez to the Mets, Heilman might have to be sacrificed.

If the Mets got Baez, he would set up for new closer Billy Wagner. But Baez doesn't seem to want to switch jobs. In an interview yesterday with the St. Petersburg Times, he said, "I don't know if I want to be a setup guy. I want to be a closer.

"But if they trade me, I don't have a choice. If they want me to be a setup guy, that's what I'll do."

Complex 4 team/multi-player deals actually occur about as often as appearances by Halley's Comet so I'm not taking this one too seriously. I think it's more a case of the tabs playing 'my headline's bigger than yours' with each other. Read that piece even semi-carefully and you'll find more denials than hints that the deal's even remotely plausible.

M&MD did indeed endorse trading just about anything for Baez - and yes, they were using the NYDN article as their jumping off point - reasoning that it would give us such a killer back end of the bullpen that it would be too much to pass up at virtually any price. It's as if the 2nd half of last season never existed for either Seo or Heilman.

It's a dirty job but..

No one wants to set up, yet I'd venture as many leads are blown in the 6th and 7th innings as in the 8th and 9th. Granted a blown lead in the 6th or 7th is more reversible, but when the Mets face a tough team and are down, I usually find myself most hopeful when they are facing the middle relievers.

Baseball needs to find a way to glorify the set up man---maybe a 3M Scotch Tape brand Hold'em Award (a sort of middle reliever's version of the Rolaids award of days gone by).

As for Heilman not wanting the job, in my book (if he is being quoted accurately) he is talking out of turn.

It's one thing for a well established veteran or a guy with 40 saves to balk at a set up or pen utility role. Quite another for someone whose achievements to date still have people talking about his potential rather than his steady track record of accomplishement. Of course he's free to express preferences like everybody else, but at this early stage I think he should still be aiming to impress the hell out of everyone in every single role he is given--and to demonstrate that he is a team player.

Benson, Seo, Heilman and Matsui for Baez and Ramirez is 33 win shares for 44 last year. Prorated for full seasons for all, and for future performance, we'd get killed, still have Diaz and Nady sitting around, and a bad outfield.

Seo goes, Heilman goes and Benson goes.

So we're left with with Pedro and his creaky toe, AARP member Tom Glavine, Zambrano and Trachsel.

If one or more of those guys goes down for any kind of extended period it really won't matter how many RBIs Manny has or how many hold opportuinities Baez gets now will it?

Trade one of those guys not all of them.

I was talkin to my brothers about this.

I say getting Baez would be a good thing.
But not if it costs either Heilman or Seo.

They say Baez is worth either of those arms easy.

Im using the logic that Heilman will be a middleman, and Seo in the starting rotation.
I know somethings gotta be done about the starting situation, but I hope Seo and Benson are still around when the dust settles. I like that Heilman has spoken up about his position on the matter, but that may make him the odd man out.
Id hate to see him go.
No one seems to want Tracshel though.
What about Zambrano?
(hey, there could be a song there^ ;^) )

Itll be interesting to see how the Mets settle this dilemma.

At one point last season I was calling for Heilman to be put in the rotation and Ishii to be put in the pen. But they wanted that left arm in there.
If the Mets could move Trax and Zambi and put Heilman in the rotation, than Baez is a worthwhile acquisition. I dont see that happening.

Would be nice to have a 1,2,3 punch of Heilman-Baez-Wagner at games end, if the need be.
But is Baez willing to be a set-up man? I would think that this could depreciate his worth if/when he walks. And soooooo many teams need a closer. Cripes, he had more saves than Wags last year.

The Mets have what they need, and now they should start unloading what the dont need in the order of how much they dont need it.
If they can get Baez for less and he will play the set-up role, kool beans.
If not, no biggy.

As far as the Manny talk, Ill believe that b.s. when I actually see it go down. And I will be very surprised and will have loads to say then.

One of em views the board from time to time, probly due to my insistance.
The comment I hear most is " Im not into message boards."

All of em (3) are a lot more busier than I.
Ill give em that.
But someday I will drag all three in by the ear.
