Best 'One' Song Ever

Johnny Dickshot
Dec 16 2005 10:54 AM

I'll start by nominating the two I described.

Update the score as you vote, and once we have a "winner" (just be reasonable), someone nominates another song with 'one' in the title to take that on, and on we go.

ONE COUNTRY by Midnight Oil (1990) vs. ONE by U2 (1991)

As discussed in the other thread, these songs are so similar I wouldn't be surprised to discover U2 cribbed. At any rate, while U2 gives an undeniably powerful performance and Bono really signs his heart out, the Oils are just as passionate about the plight of the poor mine-laborers, and win this by a nose for being more original, and having the more explosive, key-changing, house-bringing-downing climax.

Oils 1, U2 0

Edgy DC
Dec 16 2005 11:00 AM

"One" --- U2
"One Country" --- Midnight Oil

And, just to kerfluff your system, I'll nominate one now and stick it in third because it beats neither of those.

"One on One" --- Hall and Oates

seawolf17
Dec 16 2005 11:07 AM

I nominate Metallica's "One". Not only did it put Metallica on the MTV map for the first time, but it's a tremendous slab of heavy rock that may be the signature song for the most important heavy metal bands of their time. It slides in above Hall & Oates easily; I would put it above U2 and the Oils, but that's just personal preference and I don't know that anyone else would agree.

Dec 16 2005 11:08 AM

This is a tough one Dickshot, your analysis is spot on, I must vote for U2 if only because "one" live in concert is so powerful, still both are great songs..

U2 - 1
Midnight Oil - 0

I nominate 3 Dog Night's "One (Is the Loneliest Number)" because it has One in its title.

I nominate "One" by Eddie from Ohio (not rock I know so feel to disqualify if you like).

I'd rank them:
1. One Country - Midnight Oil
2. One - U2
3. One is the loneliest number - Three Dog Night
4. One - Eddie from Ohio
5. One on One - Hall & Oates
n/a. One - Metallica (never heard it to my knowledge)

Dec 16 2005 11:29 AM

Time out: This isn't working the way it should. I was hoping to have a showdown between the first two, then progress.

But let's scrap that already and re-set the field with 12 or 16 "Ones" in a double elimination tournament, I'll do a random draw once the field is set, then we'll have a series of polls for the voting (we can merge the threads later if this makes the room too messy)

So far qualifying for the tournament:

1. ONE COUNTRY -- Midnight Oil
2. ONE -- U2
3. SHE's THE ONE -- Bruce
4. ONE (IS THE LONLIEST NUMBER) -- THREE DOG NIGHT
5. ONE Metallica
6. ONE ON ONE -- Hall and Oates
7. THE ONE I LOVE -- REM
8. THE LUCKY ONE -- Freedy Johnston
9. ONE LOVE -- Bob Marley
10. FOR NO ONE -- Beatles

we need 2 or 4 more

Sorry about that.

Both "One in a Million"s --- Guns 'n' Roses and the Romantics --- stink. If contemporary pop/post-grunge two-chord songs are allowed, how about "One Thing" by Finger Eleven?

How about Nelly's "#1"? Great song.

I think this should be restricted to songs called "One" or "The One" or "1"... there are waaaaay too many songs who use "one" in conjunction with a lot of other words.

Yeah, I agree that "She's the One" and "The Lucky One" --- worthy as they are --- open the field to too many players. We expand beyond songs with themes of one-ness to themes of she-ness.

Else, why not have "Twenty-Five Forty-One."

Dec 16 2005 11:58 AM

Not really. Get a whole mess of songs. 20 or so. We each vote for, say, 5 or 10 that we would like to see get in the next round and then, in a field of 10, we rank them. You get 10 points for first, 9 for second, etc. and then "one" emerges as the winner.

Johnny Dickshot
Dec 16 2005 12:05 PM

I like a double-elimination tourney with real contenders.

There's obviously dozens that will be left out, but cuts need to be made, and like your Junior High basketball coach, I'm just going to tape a sheet to the wall and you can celebrate or go home crying.

Rather than a strict limit based first on title content, I'm first going to thin the field based on the 1) recognizability and 2) believeability tests:

1) Songs that were generally "hits" or at the very least, can be heard now and again on a rock-era radio station and ought to be familiar to most of us (this will eliminate folkies, rap artists, homos, etc)

2) Songs that might stand a punchers chance.

Last chasnce for nominees: I'll post a 12 or 16 song bracket tourney soon.

metirish
Dec 16 2005 12:08 PM

Well its obvious nobody is reading the content of the messages, anyway.

The arbitrary despot had made his choices, and done a random bracket drawing. The Foo Fighters were disqualified because their "One" didn't appear in the iTunes "essential" list while H&O's "one on one" did. Same criteria qualify new arrival "I'm One" by the Who (Elton John disqualified on taste; ONE COUNTRY disallowed by the tournament director to shut up the disappointees). Note the unexpected arrival of Orleans but be careful, it could be a sleeper.

The songs were randomly selected by dice roll in a 12-song, double-elimination tournament (meaning, every song will be voted on at least twice and some several times). The brackets as follows:

(1) ONE LOVE -- Bob Marley

STILL THE ONE -- Orleans
