Time Magazine Person of the Year

When does Time announce its annual "Person of the Year"?

I think the biggest story of 2005 (in the United States, anyway) has to be Hurricane Katrina. Unfortunately the story didn't provide any real hero, and too many villains. Can a storm itself be "Person of the Year"? If not, I think it should go to the victims and evacuees.

Or else to David Wright.

Time has cosen a few bad people over the years for the honor, wasn't Bin Laden chosen a few years back?.

There is speculation that it will go to Katrina ("Hurricane of the Year") or to Natural Disasters (so you can include the tsunami, the earthquake in Pakistan, etc.). They've done lame-o things like giving it to computers, or women or some other non-person.

Bin Laden didn't get it. In '01 it went to Giuliani. They have, however, given it to bad guys if they are the main newsmakers (Hitler, Khomeini, etc.)

Nope.

They have chosen non-humans though - the Endangered Earth, the personal computer, so a hurricane may just be under consideration.

I'd vote for David Wright, but they took away my voting privileges a few years back when I voted for Peanut.

The guy from [u:0746374e20]Time[/u:0746374e20] was on "Today" this morning -- I missed most of it, but I think he was talking about it coming down to Katrina or GWBush, among a few others.

So it comes down to two disasters then.

Have the women of America killed sharpie yet?

Dark horse: Bono.

Time/Warner/AOL doesn't have any interest in Island Records, do they?

That's a great dark horse pick Edgy, Tom Cruise would never win, would he?

Bush a three-timer? He doesn't have that much influence.

Here are the nominees on the TIME website:

Steve Jobs
Bill and Melinda Gates
J.K. Rowling
Condoleezza Rice
Bono
George W. Bush
Pope Benedict XVI
The Google Guys
Rick Warren
Valerie Plame
Mother Nature
Lance Armstrong

Yeah, sorry, women. What I meant was "individual person."

I think it's funny (not just here, but on the elevator, in the mens room,
at the bank) people just love taking pot shots at the Prez.

Really, would things be that much different - today - December 16th, 2005 -
is John Kerry were president?

I seriously doubt it.

My guess is that "our angry planet" will be person of the year for that mag
that I wouldn't even wipe my ass with.

Speaking of potshots KC that was a very not subtle pot shot at me.

I did not in fact make a pot shot, but in fact said pretty much the same thing that you did that this president - or any other president - makes that much of difference and thus I couldn't see Bush being named PotY for the third time.

KC could also be talking about me, in posting after seawolf I replied with an obvious bit of sarcasm..no big deal though.

Ah...obviously I'm a bit defensive. Sorry KC.

BTW, I agree with the butt-wiping thing.

Looking at that list, Bono is a stronger candidate than I thought, though Il Papa has a case also. How 'bout that al-Zarqawi fella?

If Bono wins, it'll be about the second or third time in his career that over-exposure has led to a popular backlash in the pop marketplace. It'll be great for him in getting him more juice with world leaders, but prove a challenge to U2's career.

Then he'll have to curse up a storm on tv to re-legitimize himself again.

In 1943, Time's Man of the Year was Josef Stalin.

This year my money's on Mother Nature.

Hardcore U2 fans are pretty forgiving of their boys. They'll just laugh it off as something else to inflate Bono's ego. As for the average rock fan, I agree with you Edgy on the possible backlash.
Mother Nature is the choice, I think, although didn't the tsunami actually hit in December of last year?

I read a story a week or so back about the British bookies noticing a large number of bets from the NYC/Northern Jersey area for 'Mother Nature' and their suspicion that it's coming from TW employees with insider info attempting to cash in.

Considering that the South Asian Tsumani was less than a year ago - even though it was technically in '04 (Dec 26) - 'Mother Nature' is probably where I'd put my money too.

I just like being contrary. When I was driving home I was thinking, "shit,
I hope no one on the forum like works for Time" or something.

No pot shots, I love youse guys.

If it is Mother Nature, then I hope they use this image (or one like it) on the cover:

Remember her?

It's not nice to fool Mother Nature!

I bet there are some "Adult" magazines which also named their 'threesome of the year' this week ... although it'll probably be a different crew and for different reasons.

Wow, I had no idea that Bono & the Gates were working together (especially since U2 does commercials for Apple - ha, ha). It's good the award is bringing attention to solving the problems of poverty and disease though.
