IGT, 8/11, The Return of Hawkman
Edgy MD Aug 10 2013 09:30 PM |
Jon Niese returns to action after a DL stint that started as cold-weather-related stiffness turned to tendonitis turned to a rotator cuff tear.
|
Zvon Aug 10 2013 09:50 PM Re: IGT, 8/11, The Return of Hawkman |
Oh yea, we have another Hawkman. He returns tomorrow? Kool beans.
|
Centerfield Aug 11 2013 05:45 AM Re: IGT, 8/11, The Return of Hawkman |
It takes a brave man to pitch with a torn labia.
|
Ashie62 Aug 11 2013 10:15 AM Re: IGT, 8/11, The Return of Hawkman |
Well played...I hope Niese's labia doesnt fall off..
|
Ashie62 Aug 11 2013 11:07 AM Re: IGT, 8/11, The Return of Hawkman |
And in other news this dude at CBS speculates..via..Terry..that Wright is done for the year..
|
MFS62 Aug 11 2013 01:25 PM Re: IGT, 8/11, The Return of Hawkman |
Heard on WFAN that to make roster room for Hawkman, they "deactivated" Heffner, to send him back to NY for some medical tests. No DL yet.
|
Frayed Knot Aug 11 2013 02:00 PM Re: IGT, 8/11, The Return of Hawkman |
I have no idea what "deactivated" means. I've certainly never heard of it as an official roster move.
|
Edgy MD Aug 11 2013 02:20 PM Re: IGT, 8/11, The Return of Hawkman |
Ike Davis, walking maniac, helps load the bases for Baxter.
|
Edgy MD Aug 11 2013 02:22 PM Re: IGT, 8/11, The Return of Hawkman |
Wow! A three-run E3 is a rare site.
|
Zvon Aug 11 2013 02:23 PM Re: IGT, 8/11, The Return of Hawkman |
Wow. 3 run error for Goldy.
|
Zvon Aug 11 2013 02:24 PM Re: IGT, 8/11, The Return of Hawkman |
Ha! I won't say Prado sucks but I will laugh at him. Oh, he should have stopped that but no error on the play.
|
Edgy MD Aug 11 2013 02:25 PM Re: IGT, 8/11, The Return of Hawkman |
You know, when you hire Steve Sax to coach your infielders, don't come looking to me for sympathy.
|
Kong76 Aug 11 2013 02:32 PM Re: IGT, 8/11, The Return of Hawkman |
Nice first-inning cushion for Niese's labia.
|

*searching for appropriate image...... ___________________ Dont let a cheap infield single make you shake your head in dismay Niese. Stay focused. Baxter hauls in the foul pop.
|
Zvon Aug 11 2013 02:36 PM Re: IGT, 8/11, The Return of Hawkman |
With a four run lead I guess I don't want to see Young go through the outfield wall, but I think that was catchable.
|
Zvon Aug 11 2013 02:37 PM Re: IGT, 8/11, The Return of Hawkman |
Cody Ross down and hopefully out. Tripped over first base. Ha.
|
Edgy MD Aug 11 2013 02:39 PM Re: IGT, 8/11, The Return of Hawkman |
Hopefully to me, he's OK. But it looks like no.
|
Zvon Aug 11 2013 02:41 PM Re: IGT, 8/11, The Return of Hawkman |
|
Yea, I apologize. I was being a dick. I don't wish ill or nil to Cody. Just get him the hell off the field please.
|
Edgy MD Aug 11 2013 02:44 PM Re: IGT, 8/11, The Return of Hawkman |
Squeaky clean rookie making his debut at first now.
|
themetfairy Aug 11 2013 02:47 PM Re: IGT, 8/11, The Return of Hawkman |
I closed my eyes for a few minutes and woke up to a 4-0 Mets lead.
|
Zvon Aug 11 2013 02:52 PM Re: IGT, 8/11, The Return of Hawkman |
I stepped off and I'm greeted with Niese at second base, 2 out. Summary says: Jon Niese singles on a ground ball to left fielder Martin Prado.
|
Edgy MD Aug 11 2013 03:10 PM Re: IGT, 8/11, The Return of Hawkman |
Another Ike hit highlights a third-inning one-run rally. Inning ends with Baxter thrown out at the plate, but it was a good send, considering the pitcher was on deck with two outs.
|
Zvon Aug 11 2013 03:11 PM Re: IGT, 8/11, The Return of Hawkman |
Baxter a dead duck at the plate. Nice try. Worth going for it with Niese up next. But we all knew he wasn't going to make it unless someone screwed up. No one did.
|
Frayed Knot Aug 11 2013 03:11 PM Re: IGT, 8/11, The Return of Hawkman |
And now we have the 4th guy thrown out on the basepaths in this series - but, unlike the others where in each case I was screaming NOOOO! as soon as the runner made the turn, I liked this chance. Already had the lead, pitcher due up, running on the pitch, etc.
|
Edgy MD Aug 11 2013 03:12 PM Re: IGT, 8/11, The Return of Hawkman |
The only downside was a seriously spazzy slide sending his reconstructed shoulder into harm's way.
|
Zvon Aug 11 2013 03:14 PM Re: IGT, 8/11, The Return of Hawkman |
TOSS PRADO!

Ump lets him yak over a strike 3 call. For a little longer than I would have.

This guy Hill is a pain in the ass.
|

Hill homers to make it 5-4.
|
Edgy MD Aug 11 2013 03:31 PM Re: IGT, 8/11, The Return of Hawkman |
Funny to see Laggy put the breaks on there. Looks like Terry got through.

Wilmer Flores, Mr. Bases Loaded.
|
Zvon Aug 11 2013 03:33 PM Re: IGT, 8/11, The Return of Hawkman |

Still. Keiths right. He should not be looking over his shoulder to right field. He should have been looking at Tueff. Ike walks on down to first again.
|
Ashie62 Aug 11 2013 03:39 PM Re: IGT, 8/11, The Return of Hawkman |
I missed alot of action.
|
Zvon Aug 11 2013 03:54 PM Re: IGT, 8/11, The Return of Hawkman |
Very nice catch by Bax. I get the feeling the final score of this game is not going to be 5-4.
|
Edgy MD Aug 11 2013 03:54 PM Re: IGT, 8/11, The Return of Hawkman |
I guess Baxter's shoulder is alright.
|
Zvon Aug 11 2013 04:02 PM Re: IGT, 8/11, The Return of Hawkman |
5-4, two out, none on and Lags bunting? Jeeze. He thinks better of it and grounds out to short.
|
Zvon Aug 11 2013 04:04 PM Re: IGT, 8/11, The Return of Hawkman |
Gratz Davidson (1st MLB hit). Now do something stupid on the bases.

If that wasn't Niese's last pitch, then my name ain't Nathan Arizona.

Ashie62 Aug 11 2013 04:16 PM Re: IGT, 8/11, The Return of Hawkman |
For a guy that was about to face Dr. Andrews not too long ago the Hawk did good.
|
Edgy MD Aug 11 2013 04:17 PM Re: IGT, 8/11, The Return of Hawkman |
How does Ike dig out of the 0-2 hole there?
|
Edgy MD Aug 11 2013 04:21 PM Re: IGT, 8/11, The Return of Hawkman |
Arizona had a twitter poll about who had the best cameo on Seinfeld --- Keith Hernandez, Buck Showalter, Paul O'Niell, or Danny Tartabull.

No contest. Tho I think what Keith did there in that classic episode was much more than a cameo.

Dislocated right hip for Cody Ross....

Dislocated right hip for Cody Ross. Thats pretty damn bad. Now I feel like a shitheel.

lol. I didn't wish it. But I did laugh at his misfortune. Took a bit but I have forgiven myself.

Okay. I really feel bad now. Stop with the Cody replays.

Keeping his consecutive game RBI string intact. Later

Zvon Aug 11 2013 05:16 PM Re: IGT, 8/11, The Return of Hawkman |
Opposite field. Met fan kid catches it, very kool. I was not expecting that from Flores. I made Lagares a new KB last night but none for Wilma.
|
Zvon Aug 11 2013 05:21 PM Re: IGT, 8/11, The Return of Hawkman |
Good game. It looks like we ruined any chance the Snakes had of catching L.A.
|
Edgy MD Aug 11 2013 05:26 PM Re: IGT, 8/11, The Return of Hawkman |
Pretty cool to cap the game with Flores' first career homer.
|
Edgy MD Aug 11 2013 05:29 PM Re: IGT, 8/11, The Return of Hawkman |
Murphy, by the way, did a psychout fake fist bump on Flores.

Until something else works, I'm OK, with Kid Kaboom as a Flores nickname.

I heard it on the radio all statically out in the boonies.

"Deactivation" is this case meant demotion to the minors. If the tests reveal an actual injury he'll be DL'd and the demotion will be rescinded but the Mets needed to do it in this order so as to get Niese back on the roster for yesterday.
|
John Cougar Lunchbucket Aug 12 2013 07:13 AM Re: IGT, 8/11, The Return of Hawkman |
That was a pretty swift descent from "No. 1 starter out of the ASB" to the minors for The Hef but you gotta admit he earned it.
|
Edgy MD Aug 12 2013 07:18 AM Re: IGT, 8/11, The Return of Hawkman |
Look at these Mets, transacting like things matter and stuff.

Are those, in fact, Mets and not Giants climbing those steps?
|
metirish Aug 12 2013 07:32 AM Re: IGT, 8/11, The Return of Hawkman |
Wanted to comment too on how much I like that picture. Hell of a long walk I imagine.
|
Edgy MD Aug 12 2013 07:35 AM Re: IGT, 8/11, The Return of Hawkman |
I'm curious what he's hiding behind that big popup screen. He could have added the graphics on the face of the outfield wall, to the left and right of the windbreaker-clad coachie, but he added this architectural oddity. Unless that wall is really there.

Me too.
Those are Giants and I'm glad you brought this up. I didn't realize that credit was mandatory. So let me credit the photographer before he finds me. Thank you Hy Peskin! Baseball: New York Giants vs Pittsburgh Pirates. Double header. New York, NY 8/22/1954 MANDATORY CREDIT: Hy Peskin/Sports Illustrated SetNumber: X1617 F32
That was there. I pity the folks with seats behind that. But they couldn't have sat fans behind that, right? A more familiar view of the same type of wall is also on the other side of the center field section. Imagine being one of those two guys off to the right with that fantastic view of Willies catch.
I believe it did. I used this as the source because it looked old like and painted on. I added the word WIN.
And this leads to a question I've been meaning to ask about this photo. There is an identical set of stairs on the other side of the monuments. Are those the correct stairs for the home team to exit through? Did those stairs lead to an area that branched off to the clubhouses, or were they direct to each clubhouse? & thnx guys. I'm glad you dig that one.
|
Zvon Aug 12 2013 03:00 PM Re: IGT, 8/11, The Return of Hawkman |
Found this in my Willie folder. Mays is almost all dressed as he exits the clubhouse (That might answer my question right there). You can see the back of the silly wall. Was that there just for the batters eye deal? If not what the hell was that there for?

|
Edgy MD Aug 12 2013 03:10 PM Re: IGT, 8/11, The Return of Hawkman |
The whole outfield ran downhill. Leo Durocher said that from the dugout, all he saw was Mays' shoulders and head. And that was certainly an asset Mays used in playing shallow and going back on the ball.
|
batmagadanleadoff Aug 12 2013 03:15 PM Re: IGT, 8/11, The Return of Hawkman |
I wonder if these two pictures were taken on the same day, seconds apart?
|
batmagadanleadoff Aug 12 2013 03:18 PM Re: IGT, 8/11, The Return of Hawkman |
|
They were. I was able to match several of the fans at the edge of the wall.
|
Edgy MD Aug 12 2013 03:20 PM Re: IGT, 8/11, The Return of Hawkman |
Great to see a chair, a hose, and other groundskeeping equipment under the stairs but technically in play.
|
Ceetar Aug 12 2013 03:24 PM Re: IGT, 8/11, The Return of Hawkman |
|
If you have to dig around back there, 475 feet from home plate, I think it's a safe bet the guy's scoring anyway. But if I was the home team I'd make sure there was a baseball right under the edge of the stairs for quick-grabbing purposes.

Oh, Giants were the visitors there in the Mays photo. Wow. Didn't realize that. So all indications are that I got the wrong stairs. Well, lets keep that to ourselves. Great pics batmags.
I always thought what Leo said was exaggerated. I guess not. That's pretty crazy.
Brilliant! Reading up on the '69 World Series doing the fake baseball cards I ran into a story that says Hodges grabbed a scuffed ball from a knocked over ball bag in the dugout which he presented to the ump as the shoe polish ball. There are other alternate accounts. I wish Gil were still with us. Oh, the stories he could tell.
