IGT, 8/11, The Return of Hawkman

Edgy MD
Aug 10 2013 09:30 PM

Jon Niese returns to action after a DL stint that started as cold-weather-related stiffness turned to tendonitis turned to a rotator cuff tear.

Opposing him will be his mortal enemy Sprull!

No defense against that pitch! Look at him bringing it from below his hip. Righthanded, too!

Another Ike hit highlights a third-inning one-run rally. Inning ends with Baxter thrown out at the plate, but it was a good send, considering the pitcher was on deck with two outs.

Baxter a dead duck at the plate. Nice try. Worth going for it with Niese up next. But we all knew he wasn't going to make it unless someone screwed up. No one did.
Ike scored on the Q single, which was a nice line drive to center.

And now we have the 4th guy thrown out on the basepaths in this series - but, unlike the others where in each case I was screaming NOOOO! as soon as the runner made the turn, I liked this chance. Already had the lead, pitcher due up, running on the pitch, etc.

"Deactivation" is this case meant demotion to the minors.
If the tests reveal an actual injury he'll be DL'd and the demotion will be rescinded but the Mets needed to do it in this order so as to get Niese back on the roster for yesterday.

And this leads to a question I've been meaning to ask about this photo. There is an identical set of stairs on the other side of the monuments. Are those the correct stairs for the home team to exit through? Did those stairs lead to an area that branched off to the clubhouses, or were they direct to each clubhouse?

If you have to dig around back there, 475 feet from home plate, I think it's a safe bet the guy's scoring anyway. But if I was the home team I'd make sure there was a baseball right under the edge of the stairs for quick-grabbing purposes.

Brilliant! Reading up on the '69 World Series doing the fake baseball cards I ran into a story that says Hodges grabbed a scuffed ball from a knocked over ball bag in the dugout which he presented to the ump as the shoe polish ball. There are other alternate accounts. I wish Gil were still with us. Oh, the stories he could tell.
