Dead DVR

Our DVR started wheezing on Saturday morning, and breathed its last breath on Sunday. We have a replacement now, but it appears that we lost our archive of recordings.

Most of the items were unimportant or easily replaced (movies that pop up on cable every so often, some of the better Mets Yearbooks, etc.). But there were a few things that we won't get back, like the Mets Fast Forward of Johan's No No and Dickey's 20th.

A First World Problem, for sure.

What would you hate to lose the most if your DVR suddenly quit on you?

Re: Dead DVR

one day I'll get a DVR that properly hooks up to my Network so I can transfer files back and forth.

until then, nothing. I learned that lesson. Had Optimum and I think I went through 4-5 boxes in 2 years. Fios has been fine since, boxes haven't fried, but the security settings on the modem are tripping me up i Think.

that reminds me, need to call them about moving.

Re: Dead DVR

Ours has been whirring this week. I told the wife to watch anything now that she cares about. I do not utilize the DVR -- the rest of my family does. I watch very little television besides live sports.

Re: Dead DVR

Whirring is a sign of imminent death. You might as well order your replacement unit now....

Re: Dead DVR

Adding insult to injury - the replacement DVR that arrived today is defective.

Ugh!

Re: Dead DVR

Dickey's 20th was the Mets Classic game on SNY during the offday yesterday, which was better programming than The Empire Strikes Back (AKA The Return of Arod)

Re: Dead DVR

It was nice having the one hour highlights version of that.

Re: Dead DVR

Between YoungerPooper's plethora of kids programming (Sesame Street, Daniel Tiger, Sid the Science Kid, Team Umizoomi), BetterHalfer's old movies, and my sports/stories (from Los Mets to Premier League action to adult dramas to PBS specials), we have become frighteningly reliant on Ye Olde TV-Anytime Boxe.

Time to hit the library to stock up on books and DVDs.

Re: Dead DVR

Nah - it's baseball season and we still have other set boxes (just no DVD).

Re: Dead DVR

TiVo does allow for shows to be backed up to your home computer, and I have done that with a bunch of stuff.

Virtually all of my TV viewing is from the DVR. The only thing I ever watch "live" is the Mets, and that's become a small subset of what I watch.

You were asking what I would do.

No, I asked what you would hate to lose the most from what's currently on your DVR.

yeah, TiVo is great, I really really considered it (And probably will again) but it remains more expensive and right now I need every last cent.

Re: Dead DVR

You can try buying a used unit on eBay. I did that once; got one with the lifetime service already paid for (it's transferable). If you get one of the older models, it might not have all the bells and whistles, but it will still work as a basic unit. And it would be a one-time cost. I don't know if there are any deals out there, but it might be worth considering.

Re: Dead DVR

I'm gradually replenishing my DVR. There are some things lost forever (e.g., the Mets Fast Forward after Johan's no no, a couple of Opening Day games, etc.) and some things I will have to wait to retape (e.g. the movie Chicago, which is a great film to watch on the treadmill, and Johnny Dangerously), but I'm getting a viewing playlist again. I have my favorite Mets Yearbooks either taped or schedules (1962, 1963 and 1969), and finding movies. If I'm ever sick and in need of things to watch while recuperating, I'll have things available.

I was very happy to find Last Play at Shea yesterday - that's something great to have readily available.
