Mets.com says he's wearing 15. Seems to be a brutal blow against the already shaky case for Beltran number retirement. And an evocation of Jerry Grote. Hopefully he hits better than young Jerry did.

Mejia spiked the first two pitches of the 4th inning and left with what looks like elbow discomfort. He was not as sharp overall tonight and sporta looked uncomfortable from the start. I'm pretty sure we see him next in March. Now Aardsma getting bopped around. Game almost 2 hours old in the 4th inning.

Volquez is weird. He's always moving --- twitching and stomping around the mound --- but takes his time actually toeing the rubber and throwing the ball. Big two-out hit for Ike.

The Pads are Thayer's third team, and he'll probably play for three or four more before he's done, but the Padres are defintiely the team a guy named Dale Thayer should play for. Don't know why.

my thoughts on d'Anaud so far: - For a catcher, he seems to have trouble, you know, catching; - He moves around way too much behind the plate (if i was pitching to him, i'd take him aside in the dugout and say "hold the fuck still and give me a steady target, or I'll put Icy Hot in your jockstrap.") - The next base runner he throws out will be his first (0-3 so far); - But he's pretty quick back there, and i think that will allow him to overcome these issues; - As a hitter, he hasn't yet; - He does have a good eye, and that's critical for his potential as a hitter So i can see the tools that make him ab attractive prospect, but he's had a bumpy start and doesn't look quite ready. Perhaps he'll calm down and settle in, and let his skills take over.

Yeah, its kind of unfair to Recker, who has done a credible job in the difficult position of backup catcher. Meanwhile, it wouldn't kill the kid to spend 2 more weeks in AAA. Although, with his injury history, maybe it would.
