Tuning in to a 2-2 tie in the 6th. Harvey has 5 Ks towards the discount. Five hits for the Pads.

Speaking of discounts... that Padre rally in the 5th was straight off of a Marshall's Outlet rack.

Following a leadoff single in the 6th by some Gyork, Harvs does better with the damage control in the 6th.

After giving up a leadoff hit and getting a sacrifice, Rice makes previously-scorching Will Venable look like some kind of moron wearing army camouflage as a baseball uniform.

To get us around these curves to the eighth, it's time for some Germen ingenuity.

Appropriately enough for this series, that was maybe the most ho-hum stolen home run that baseball has ever seen.

Ha, it twas. Germen walks his first batter in the 8th. Lead off walks if not properly treated can lead to a kill.

That was odd. Is Flores possibly a little short in the brain department? lil bit?

Re: IGT 8/18/2013: NYM @ SDP: Sunday Harvey Sunday

About as short there as Pete Happy is long on balls.

The testicular kind, as he tightrope-walks to two outs. On to the ninth.

-- Would be nice if a manager could realize that the heart of the order and therefore the REAL save opportunity was in the 8th inning and bring in your best pitcher for then

-- I also don't like Terry's too-often double-switches. Pedro's not going two innings no matter what happened there, so all the double-switch accomplishes is to tell Bud Black exactly who is going to PH for the pitcher's slot next time around so he can get his LOOGY up.

-- We still need some more offense no matter what happens

This. Why did TC leave in German (RH) against Headley (LH) when Feliciano was warming up? Was he saving him for the 9th?

Well he brought Feliciano in eventually. In fact he kept him in longer than I thought and it backfired anyway.

My larger point is that I'd like to see a manager -- ANY MANAGER -- cut himself free from designating specific innings to specific pitchers and fit the order to that particular day's needs. In this case, assuming that Hawkins and/or Aardsma are our "top" guys, why not bring them in for the 8th when the Pads had their best hitters up instead of saving them for the save situation that never occurred. So we wound up losing this game using one reliever who has been in the majors for like 45 minutes and another who has been in for about 45 years.

And our year of walk-off losses continues.

Re: IGT 8/18/2013: NYM @ SDP: Sunday Harvey Sunday

He brought him in "eventually" but after the tying run had scored. Your point about designating innings is apt, especially when the "Closer" isn't there. What, Hawkins is too good to use in the 8th now?

Re: IGT 8/18/2013: NYM @ SDP: Sunday Harvey Sunday

In all fairness to Collins, they DID have a flight to catch.

Really, though, would you argue that Aardsma and Hawkins are markedly better options than Germen at this point?

Re: IGT 8/18/2013: NYM @ SDP: Sunday Harvey Sunday

He was in the hole, and the runner was going on contact; the run was scoring, no matter what. What the fumble cost him was an out... which the Padres eventually wasted crapping out against Feliciano.
