Brown's gonna have at least seven total bases today. Calling it.

Random Monday afternoon game in random city against random opponent made all the more random by the presence of a designated hitter in the Metropolitan lineup.

They changed the rules, but just in the American League, about 40 years ago.

One and counting, after a fisted, 1-2, bases-loaded single in the first. One-nil, New York Baseball Club.

Two out in the bottom of the first, Josh Willingham with the rising liner to center, and... hoo, boy. Juan for the ages.

Not watching? Oh, you'll see it on the highlights tonight.

You'll see his first at-bat there, too. Freaky infield single on a hot shot to Trevor Plouffe that sticks in the guy's glove-webbing.

This is a similar pattern to what they did a few days ago: Minny's pitcher retired just 3 of the first 10 batters (six singles and a walk) but the Mets have only 2 runs to show for it on account of two more outs on the bases - a Flores GiDP and Qball running into an out at 3rd on a single.

Good start but it coulda/shoulda have been better.

Half-assedly-jogging ourselves out of a big inning, yes.

Still, 2-0, Singular Births.

Re: IGT #123 8/19/13 Mets @ Twins: Monday Matinee

Murph tries to throw across his body while coming in on a grounder, and misses by, oh, about five feet. ("And it's called a HIT," muses Gary bemusedly.)

Grasping for compliments after yet another Lagares gem-made-to-look-easy, Gary throws out "Andruw Jones." Which, y'know, Braves taint (and lack of 40-HR power) aside, is not inapt.

Edited 1 time(s), most recently on Aug 19 2013 01:21 PM

The Mets kept trying to let the Minny pitcher off the hook (despite TEN hits and two walks) but he inevitably sucked too much to make it through the 4th inning.

I had no idea this was a 2pm start. Just saw the replay of Lagares's catch. Very nice.

Games are NEVER under control in the 6th inning.

And immediately there are back to back hits to start the inning.

Re: IGT #123 8/19/13 Mets @ Twins: Monday Matinee

Atchison gets the 9th with the Mets up 6-1. This looks like it was a good game all around for the Mets. Might have to replay this and check out the early innings.

Atchy wraps it! Very nice play by Flores ends it.

I caught innings 1-2 and much of 6-8 at work interrupted by one meeting, and the last two innings in the car and then in the park on my phone while running. Glad to see (hear) them dominate.

Maybe the Mets should consider Byrd for next year..If he had little value at trade time maybe a 12 million 2 year is possible.

I think the only reason he will play somewhere else is because some team will offer him two yrs and the Mets won't. They should consider it. He plays hard and is in as good or better shape than anyone on this team.

Re: IGT #123 8/19/13 Mets @ Twins: Monday Matinee

Saw the early innings and us and them should have scored more runs in this game. Some more head-up-ass fielding plays that don't hurt us. Gee really pitched a great game :)

I was against re-signing Byrd for a long time, but considering the dearth of outfield talent in the near-term pipeline, I wouldn't be against re-upping him for another year. Even two if it wasn't expensive.

The expense is the rub. If they could bring him back for a year or two at his current salary, I'd be all for it. The problem is, his salary is certain to go up, and there's a good chance this his production will go down. It's not an easy call.

That's what a lot of people said about Hairston too, and he's not really been great this year. The Mets could use that that player in 2014 more than in 2013 though probably, and Byrd is better. On the other hand, he's 36 and having a career year by far. That doesn't feel like the guy to invest in.

I hope the Mets invest/trade/acquire/promote/steal/grow an outfielder or two better than Byrd and that it's not really an issue, but I guess we'll see.
