Football/Fútbol/Soccerball 2013-2014

A very interesting EPL season starts om Saturday.

Here is the schedule

http://www.nbcsports.com/live-extra-schedule

What is not clear is what actual stations all those 10AM games are on, NBC will though be utilizing all their various stations and will have a big online presence. Excited about their coverage, FSC had gotten stale and the whole FS Plus was a scam, plus they wanted extra to view online.

NBC are offering all of that free, and have apps

http://www.nbcsports.com/sports-mobile

for your PC

I'm all pumped up with those radio ads they've been running, I'm thinking this could be the year I actually watch some games.

Then I look and see they have 5 games scheduled for the same start time Saturday. What channel is West Ham on?

Re: Football/Fútbol/Soccerball 2013-2014

Yeah, they've been advertising this "every game live" thing but obviously it's not going to be every game live on regular TV; the internet is going to be involved somehow. I just have no idea how they're going to decide which game takes priority aside from the usual 'Is Man U playing?' question that networks ask over here whenever the Yanx or Cowboys or Notre Dame are involved.

Saturday (probably not a coincidence) is also the day the 'Fox Sports 1' network is to debut. I believe that's essentially going to replace FSC as they expand their scope from simply futbol to other sports (namely: football). Either way, anything that even sticks a toe into ESPN's monopoly in this country is a good thing as far as I'm concerned. Nobody is going to knock the Bristol stompers off their perch anytime soon, but if NBC & FOX can just manage to start competing for shelf space in the whole sports supermarket then it'll be a win for viewers.

Games will be on whatever channels NBC owns....CNBC. Bravo , NBCSN(formerly Outdoor Life OLN, Versus etc.)Telemundo , finding the games could be a chore.

I'm all for expanding the tent... but if the "Get to Know the Premier League" idiot's-guide stuff* that they've been running is any indication of the analysis-/announcer-quality, NBC will make us long for the days of Eric Wynalda and Brian McBride spouting... um... American-tinged wisdom.

Think Rooney comes our way, Irish? Wish him well or ill at this point? (I'm half-rooting against the move-- kinda want to see what Lukaku-- or Mata?-- can do fronting a world-class, shockingly-young attack.)

I don't see Rooney going , I kind of like the idea that a club be it Man United or Liverpool are standing up to player and agent power....why sell to Chelsea and strengthen them?, that's what Man U are thinking.

I hate FOX sports even before launch, all the promotional stuff I have seen from the cast of "personalities" is them all acting goofy..... like, that's their thing, " Hey, we're different". Yeah, fuck off.

Looks like Sunderland may have gotten themselves a steal, eh?

My guesses:

1. City
2. Chelsea
3. United
4. Arsenal
5. Liverpool (though between Coutinho and the psychopath, I have a funny feeling about that attack this year)
6. Swansea
7. Tottenham
8. Everton
9. Fulham
10. West Brom
11. Aston Villa
12. Sunderland
13. Norwich
14. Southampton
15. West Ham
16. Newcastle
17. Red Red Cardiff
18. Stoke
19. Crystal Palace (though I'm hoping Ian Holloway's fellas stay up)
20. Hull City

Re: Football/Fútbol/Soccerball 2013-2014

Not to hijack the soccer thread, but it's the FOX-owned 'SPEED' channel that's being converted to the new (as of tomorrow) FOXSPORTS1, not the FSC.
Presumably FSC will still carry soccer other than EPL

Games will be on whatever channels NBC owns....CNBC. Bravo , NBCSN(formerly Outdoor Life OLN, Versus etc.)Telemundo , finding the games could be a chore.

The channel guide on my system doesn't list any games for tomorrow morning on those other NBC affiliates other than on NBCSN and the one on NBC network later in the day. So it'll become even more of a chore finding the games if NBC itself keeps them a secret or doesn't know where they are.

I didn't know that about Speed and FS1. I guess FSC will show some Euro leagues, maybe Scotland. ... they show that on FS Plus. ... they are promoting FS1 as the destination for the Champions League.

FSC won't be doing much come fall, when it turns into FXX (FX spinoff network, carrying fare like It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia and The League).

That United game was over once that 2-goal burst in the first half came (unfortunately for those of us hoping for something to carry us through the midday sports doldrums). But, hey... how about them Villa youngsters?

Re: Football/Fútbol/Soccerball 2013-2014

Van Persie is just fucking brilliant. Villa were excellent and exposed Arsenal again, if ever a team needs new players it's the Gunners. One of the joys of Twitter is following Piers Morgan as he has a meltdown over how bad his beloved Arsenal.

Very much liking NBC coverage so far, some good pundits and I like the pre-hame/half time and post game banter.

A few gripes, After watching the Villa game and then the post game I had to remember that the Man United game was on the main NBC channel, their live extra coverage is just going to be great....no more going to sites like this http://www.vipboxonline.eu/sports/football.html.....all the games are on live extra with your subscription....the Android app needs work, it's choppy and freezes a lot.....there is no Kindle Fire HD app......it works great on the Chromebook....I wold say it had been a very successful first weekend for NBC's coverage.

I would have brought over Warron Barton and not Kyle Martino from FSC.

And here is something I really appreciate, they are not dumbing down the coverage for the American audience, there is no need to, the fans here as as knowledgeable as anyone else ....as evidenced by you lot.

Re: Football/Fútbol/Soccerball 2013-2014

Barton's absence notwithstanding, I think I enjoyed the NBC studio show loads more than I did Fox's.

The thing that's amazing about Van Persie-- apart from his ability to turn Gooners crimson these days-- is that he shows you so many different superlative skills-- whether in the air, back-to-net ten yards out, or ball-at-feet outside the area, OR running onto service from midfield, he is just so, so, SO lethal.

Yeah it was awful....for all his bluster Morhino's teams can play very defensive....did he even start this game with a stricker?

Tense game for the wrong reasons...looks like Rooney is staying...

Strikerless, indeed. But the tip-off for me was starting the deeper-lying de Bruyne as an "attacker" over a weapon like Mata or Lukaku.

Mourinho's said all the right things; the talk comes from his not playing, which could be a match fitness issue. He and Luiz were reportedly nursing hamstring injuries coming out of Confederations Cup, and reportedly didn't take part in training prior to the opening-weekend.

Reportedly.

The first few weeks-- including the clean, weekend-end review-- have made me eat my semi-assertion here. Deadspin agrees.

Wild night in the CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying last night. Mexico were nearly eliminated from World Cup Qualifying, but 2 last minute goals by the USA (who had already qualified and were playing a lot of backup players) knocked out Panama and allowed Mexico to take 4th place. The USA, Costa Rica, and Honduras are qualified for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and Mexico will now face New Zealand in a playoff. Panama and Jamaica go home.

Even if you think Football/Fútbol/Soccerball is hella stupid, watch this beautiful thing. I watched it like 19 times already. The stupefied looks on the Norwich keeper and defenders' faces, along with their "what-the-fuck-just-happened?" body language perfectly sums it up.

I'm a bit late to this thread...sorry. My OH lives in London and is a huge Chelsea supporter, so I can explain this one. There has been quite a bit of tension between Jose Mourhino and Mata. Mourhino changed the formation which left Mata out of the mix, which prompted the speculation of his moving. Mourhino claimed Mata slowed down the team, but other specualtion is that Mourhino has a problem with the Spanish league players. In recent weeks, he's tweaked the formation again, bringing Mata back into the fold. Although he's getting more playing time, he's still not a guaranteed starter like he was last season (which is a damn shame). Hence, I'll probably will take him out of my dream team during the next transfer window.

Torres has been toast for ages! He was injury prone when he was with Liverpool. Can't wait to see the back of him!

I think that only proves Jose is a complete asshole :)

[I]That Arsenal goal was a joy to behold.....Arsenal circa 1998/2004 version would have been proud.

Now, here's a goal from the irish women's league which I confess didn't know existed until this goal got a load of publicity from the european media, and from celebs on Twitter....Piers Morgan , several EPL players etc.

Re: Football/Fútbol/Soccerball 2013-2014

Nice work, there.

I've been through a few phases over the years on Mourinho. He's always been entertaining, and more than a little willfully prickish. But here's the thing... virtually every player he's ever had, from Benfica to Porto to Chelsea to Inter, including the ones he's had supposed "difficulties" with, including the Spanish ones (well, everyone whose name doesn't rhyme with "Peeker Basillas")... loves the guy, outside of Madrid/La Liga. Granted, they're professionals, and there may be some concern over not limiting employment possibilities factoring in there. But, still, for such a strong-willed, "controversial" manager... the near-unanimity of opinion is striking. And it's sure as hell not because he's rolling over for his veterans/stars or anything, right?

The Mata decision seems confounding, or at least frustrating, on its face-- I've loved what he's done for the squad, what he brings to the team, and the way he's represented himself and the Blues off-field; like Luiz and Ramires and a number of the recent-vintage New Blues, he seems a standup sort. But it's not like Chelsea doesn't have an absurd amount of depth/creativity in the midfield, and it's not a huge stretch that guys like Schurrle and Hazard are better fits at wing, or that he prefers what he's getting at AM from, say, Oscar just a little bit more.

That breaks a long tradition. To the casual fan it seemed like for the past 10-15 years the best player in the world was a Brazilian guy with a name that is some version of Ronald.

Of course.

I actually watched the second half and OT on tv last night and have to say if I were a Red Bulls fan I'd be pretty pissed off at how shitty they seemed to play. Just gave it away to an inferior club.

Red Bulls dominated possession but seemed almost indifferent as to whether they should take advantage of that by actually putting some scoring plays together. They reminded me of a kid playing basketball for the first time, just throwing up a shot because they didn't think to dribble or pass.

In the meantime Houston every 15 minutes or so found themselves with a sudden counterattack that was every bit as threatening. The winning goal somehow got between 2 defenders and merely broke the plane as the GK got a glove on it right at the post.

Re: Football/Fútbol/Soccerball 2013-2014

It helped-- or, rather, didn't help-- that Houston's keeper was standing on his head for the final 100 minutes or so; there were at least three near-certain second-half scores that he kept out with little help from his own defenders. (The save on the Henry bicycle kick/Cahill deflection was almost otherworldly.)
