Do you agree?
I wasn't a beach, car dude, so I would have voted for Summer In the City.

"Summer in the City," Mungo Jerry's "In the Summertime," Sly and the Family Stone's "Hot Fun in the Summertime," and The Drifters' "Under the Boardwalk" all make my list.

Re: Best Summer Song of All Time

When I was young, my friends and I adopted this as our song of summer. Can't remember why but it was a goofy song to turn up on a cheap car radio and folks around you wouldn't get mad.

[youtube:1x0wijnq]GHhD4PD75zY[/youtube:1x0wijnq]

Years later (like three weeks ago, in fact), I discovered it was produced (and that included co-writing, arranging, and playing) by Bill Laswell, my favorite hard rock producer, and that he did a lot of other fun/strange hybrids in the eighties like "World Destruction" by Johnny Rotten and Afrika Bambaataa, and bringing Sly and Robbie in to play on Mick Jagger's first solo album.

When I think of a summer song I always think of this one, which I heard blasting out a neighbor's window as I rode my bike past in that magical summer of 75.

My favorite summer song is "Summer Breeze"...everytime I hear it, winter or summer, it just makes me feel good. When I was a kid and heard it, it was how I hoped my life would turn out, and it's pretty close.

It has the phrase "Blowin' through the jasmine in my mind" in it, which may be the most seventies lyric ever.

A lot of minor chord action on that song though. Make me feel a little sad.

Re: Best Summer Song of All Time

Minor usually does that to me too, but for some reason, this one doesn't. Has to be the lyrics.

This could be a fun game. Find a lyric that best captures the zeitgeist of its era.

I've always leached a serene, mint-julep calm from Chad and Jeremy's "Summer Song."

I have always loved AND gotten severely creeped out by Jonathan Richman's "That Summer Feeling."

The big, dumb, happy-happy joy-joy center of my brain, though? That's tickled by-- in no particular order-- The Go-Gos' "Vacation," Eddie Cochran's "Summertime Blues," and-- yeah, yeah-- Nelly's "Hot in Herrrrre."

If Sirius had an all-Jonathan Richman channel, I'd listen. And yeah, I may find out that I've pulled the car over and amn't sure If I've been there 40 seconds or 40 minutes or more. But reflection, though sometime painful and poorly timed, is a good thing.

When I was a kid, we used spend our summer days at a local rec center which had several outdoor pools. This song always reminds me of sitting outside the snack bar which was on a terrace overlooking the largest pool, while we ate cups of Italian ice.

For the past 23 summers, every Fourth of July (give or take a day), Mrs. Fafif and I settle down to watch 1776 in our living room, where we rely on a fan to move the still air around, and Blythe Danner's showstopper just feels like a comforting late afternoon sun streaming in through the window. It sounds like a goofy answer, but this is essentially my personal summer song.

For pure "that song, that summer" sentimentality, the Sanford-Townsend Band springs (summers?) to mind from the summer I was 14, getting up early to deliver the Sunday Newsday to a bunch of neighbors who were never satisfied that it arrived on their doorstep early enough. (And a random unlucky subscriber was always pissed when I snatched the TV Book for my parents' use...my dad hated Newsday and would only go as far as taking the six-day subscription in deference to my transitory carrier career.) "Smoke From A Distant Fire" didn't get a ton of airplay on NY stations in the summer of 1977, but every Sunday morning it seemed to be on American Top 40, where it grabbed my attention and never let go. Because I only heard it once a week, I treat every playing of it to this day as a special treat

The worthy "summer" in the title numbers have been accounted for, but I'll throw in a vote for War, which set out to craft the quintessential summer song and hit it, I thought, in the summer of '76, even managing to rap on the CB radio (presumably about whether Jimmy Carter was gonna pick Walter Mondale or Edmund Muskie as his veep).

First contemporary song I associate with a particular summer in a hit-loving way: Mouth and MacNeal, the summer of 1972. I was nine. I still am, musically.

Belinda Carlisle's first solo hit, presented here only because I heard it on Music Choice's '80s channel this morning and for a moment in my mind it was July 1986 and the Mets were 13 or so games in front.

And since we've crept into the second half of August, nothing says summer is actually going to end like EWF as junior high approached forebodingly for the first time, 1975.

It seems too easy to choose a Beach Boys song, but 'All Summer Long' during the closing credits of 'American Graffiti', a movie which tracked the the unofficial final day of summer for the main characters, was just perfection.

For me, it's the 5150 album from Van Halen.

(ducks)

Wait, let me explain.

1. I was 11 years old when this came out. Nothing is better than summertime when you are 11 years old. No school, no worries, and you are just getting to that age in Little League (we were age 9-12) where you stop being a chump and get to play cool positions like SS and CF.

2. We were small town kids. We listened to Van Halen (even if it's some new lead singer you have never heard of), Motley Crue and some new band named Bon Jovi.

3. I got an awesome new bike that summer.

4. My favorite team was having a pretty good year.

Still no?

As soon as I saw you posted, for some reason, I got the sense that you'd be going Van Halen, but I was thinking some earlier, DLR-vintage VH. "Running with the Devil" or something.

Re: Best Summer Song of All Time

I would have no problem admitting to DLR Van Halen.

It sucks for guys my age. I'm convinced that whatever music is around when you are ages 10-14, you end up loving it no matter what. For kids from the 70's, this is easy. You can say that you love it with no shame. That music is great.

For me, 10-14 is 1985-1989. Sure, some people like this music, but it's all people who are my age. Everyone else thinks it sucks.

Not specifically a "Summer song", but the song that reminds me of a specific Summer is the Stones' (I can't get no) Satisfaction.
It was popular the Summer I was in Army Basic Training, and we weren't getting any, either.

Somebody once described to me the summer of 1965 having three songs on the radio --- "Like a Rolling Stone," "Satisfaction," and "Ticket to Ride" --- and nobody ever got sick of them. I'm sure somebody did, and I'm sure the Supremes or somebody would dispute the existence of the three-song loop, but the point was well-made.

"Seasons in the Sun" done by Terry Jacks (based on a Jacques Brel song).
i tried to post the video, but its beyond my limited abilities. Here's a link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YG9otasNmxI

There are other versions, but this one was the best. Released back in `74, it became a mega-hit. And if we're also talking about songs that we personally associate with our childhood summers (regardless of their "summer" content), then I'd add THE NIGHT CHICAGO DIED, CATS IN THE CRADLE, and BILLY DON'T BE A HERO. I don't know why. It's between me and my therapist.

G-FAFIF, I was part of a nerd cult in high school that would routinely sing along with the cast album to 1776. We were shunned, naturally, but I still have an affection for that show. Maybe the best book of a musical ever, and the songs ain't bad neither.

Cooby, I'm pretty sure it's Nesmith singing on "Door Into Summer", but I've never really given it much thought. Still, it's kind of ironic to talk about "fake Monkees", isn't it?

i was at a comic book convention when i was a kid, back in the early 1970s, and my friends and i were debating the eras defined as the golden age and the silver age... when did each era start and end, key books, etc. I asked Stan Lee, who was sitting at a table in the convention hall signing autographs, "hey, Stan, how would you define the Golden Age." He replied, without looking up from his book signing, "13."

13 is the golden age. i was 13 in 1974. everything has a burnished glow.

The song I most attach to summer comes from the summer of '83, when WAPP and other stations played "Every Breath You Take" all the freaking time. Its no wonder I can't stand that song any more.

APP that summer also ran a promo when every time you heard a new Police song the first caller would get a free album.

They also did the "hear a new song, first caller gets a free album" thing with two other acts that summer. Can you name them????

I don't recall WAPP; I don't even know what its format is, or was. But I remember the music from the Summer of '83 -- mostly The Police, Synchronicity; Stevie Ray Vaughn's debut - Texas Flood; and David Bowie, Let's Dance, featuring SRV.

Re: Best Summer Song of All Time

WAPP was album rock in the old PLJ mode. Those are good guesses but incorrect. Of the two I'm looking for one was a solo artist who was previously in a major group. The other was a group that had a hit you still here on a lot of Fridays but otherwise faded pretty quickly.

Re: Best Summer Song of All Time

WAPP was AOR, but became the first rock station in the New York area to pick up acts that were first established by MTV. You'd hear Martin Briley on WAPP when WPLJ, WNEW, and WBAB would shrug their shoulders.

WAPP also took the huge financial gamble of establishing their listening base by launching their station (on the frequency of 103.5, the old home of "Mellow T" WTFM and right next door to then-market leader WNEW) with the commercial-free summer. I'm not sure if this '82 or '83, but it brings this thread full circle.

Anyhow, the two other acts leading to free albums were Loverboy and John Waite. If I'm correct, I fully expect you to send me your copy of Keep It Up immediately. Vinyl, cassette, or 8-track, I'm not picky.

Re: Best Summer Song of All Time

You're turning on the heat, you've got the magic touch! Loverboy is correct! John Waite is not.

The other act we are looking for is Stevie Nicks...I heard "Stand Back" way too many times that summer.

And IIRC, the commercial free summer was '82.

Re: Best Summer Song of All Time

I think WAPP spent half of the "Commercial-Free Summer" repeating the phrase "Commercial-Free Summer," so that no small segment of the population didn't know their call letters and just called the station "Commercial-Free Summer."

I kind of gave them a Metly connection as they were a Johnny-come-lately upstart and both were a part of a wave of institutions invested into formalizing the city's previously informal "Big Apple" designation.
