Geno looked like a younger, blacker, thinner Sanchez. not good. Lets just forget it and play Matt Simms, that should help get Bridgewater on board next year.

Re: Jets Still Suck 2013, Won't See '14

So, that whole Sanchez-with-the-second-team, let's-end-preseason-on-a-good-note thing? That was smart.

The fact that Ryan sent Sanchez into the game, with 11:21 remaining and the Giants leading, 15-14, suggested two things. One, that he still needed to see Sanchez perform at a certain level to convince him that he deserved to start the season opener against Tampa Bay on Sept. 8. And two, that he was so possessed by the mantra of competition that he and John Idzik, the first-year general manager, have preached, that he prioritized victory, and that he was best served playing his presumptive Week 1 starter behind a second-team offensive line.

Why risk an injury to Sanchez by playing him, Ryan was asked.

“Well, why compete period?” he said. “We’re there to win. We had our starting offense out there for three quarters because we’re trying to win the game.”

Why weren’t the other first-stringers playing if you were trying to win the game, Ryan was asked.

“It’s my decision, and we’re going to compete,” he said. “We said we’re going to compete and watch that competition.”

... There was a moment late in Ryan’s news conference, soon after a reporter asked him if it was irresponsible to leave in Sanchez, when he turned his back to the news media when pressed whether Smith could still win the job. The Snoopy trophy sat off to the side.

“I can say anything I want,” Ryan said. “That’s the beauty of this country. I can answer it 100 times. I can stand backwards and answer the question.”

and with Braylon and McKnight cut, Goodson suspended, and Santonio still hurt, who is catching the ball for this team? Kerley is our #1 receiver now, and he's a nice #3 slot receiver but a primary WR? and Stephen "I-got-talent-but-no-skill" Hill is our #2, our outside threat! With this group, it really doesn't matter who is throwing the ball, does it?

Don't know if anyone caught this in the early edition of today's NY Daily News (Don't know if it made the later editions).
There was a short article about Patriots' owner Bob Kraft. He said he really liked Tim Tebow.
But, obviously, he didn't let that get in the way of the decision by his coaches to evaluate Tim as a football player.

Hear that, Woody?
Start learning from an owner who has won several Super Bowls. Leave the football stuff to your football guys!!!!

Amen to that.

And:
Oh, I'm sure the interceptions, inaccuracy and general poor decision making will produce some emotion in me; I'm just not certain that emotion will be surprise.

Especially considering he has no one to either catch the ball or run with it, he's going to be asked to do more than he's ready for (if he ever is). I do think the OLine will be better this year and able to give him some time to make those bad decisions. And despite the extra time, i expect to seem him running for his life early and often. I also expect to see Matt Simms in the last quarter of the Pats game.

And Brady Quinn? Really? The QB FA with a worse QB rating than Sanchez? So far, Idzik's FA signings have been utterly useless, and the season hasn't even started yet.

Re: Jets Still Suck 2013, Won't See '14

oh, and i just found this article: http://www.stack.com/2013/03/01/nfl-combine-misses/

"How Vernon Gholston fooled the Jets", Jordan Zirm:

"After plowing through quarterbacks as a defensive lineman for Ohio State, Gholston put his freakish athletic talents on display during the 2008 NFL Combine. He ran an insanely fast 4.56 40 and pumped out 37 reps during the 225- pound Bench Press, tying a Combine record. Scouts raved about his ability, and NFL.com called him a ”remarkable talent.” Telling the difference between a guy who can perform at a high level in the weight room and one who can translate those skills onto the field can be tricky, but hey, that’s what NFL scouts get paid to do, and the New York Jets swung and missed. After getting chosen with the sixth overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft, Gholston played three underwhelming seasons before being released in 2010. He hasn’t seen the field since."

Oh, there was a good amount of Sanchezness on display... just in slightly-lower proportion than in its namesake.

Smith was okay, only intermittently horrible. But the horrible plays led to 14 points*. This team's defense is better than we probably had a right to expect... but-- at least sans Coples-- it's not good enough to cover the squad's offensive deficiencies.

*To a terrible team, apparently... that handed the Jets this game, make no mistake

"Remember Browning Nagle’s first game? (He had 366 yards, two touchdowns and a 108.6 rating then never passed for more than 200 yards in the rest of his career)"

While i'm happy we won, i think it was more a matter of TB being slightly better at sucking than the Jets were. It was nice to see Smith make some positive running plays, but watching him run backward 20 yards on a sack (rather than either throwing it away or just going down) was painful, and the lack of field awareness when he fumbled on the Jet 5 (unaware that he was being swarmed), ending up with a 2TO:1TD ratio, makes all the huzzahs a bit premature. I think all that can be said is that he has a decent arm, runs OK, and Josh Freeman, the Sanchez of Florida, played worse than him. And that if that stupid TB player doesn't hit Smith out-of-bounds, we're doing a post-mortem on a Jets loss, wringing our hands over Smith's lack of football IQ, and wondering when we'll see Simms.

now we play the Pats on a short week. Oy. Give the points.

Not that it really would have made a difference:

Sources: Surgery likely for Sanchez
Dr. James Andrews confirmed Wednesday that Mark Sanchez has a labral tear in his right shoulder, and the New York Jets quarterback is "likely to have surgery" that would end his 2013 season, according to team and league sources, as well as a source close to Sanchez.

Sanchez still was trying to make a final decision on whether to have the surgery now to repair the tear and instability in the shoulder following his injury in the team's third preseason game, the sources said.

I hope Clyde Gates is an excellent punt-team gunner, team-flight conversationalist, or locker-room iPod DJ, because he's not fantastic at the catching-the-ball thing.

But yeah, I'm loving Wilkerson and Richardson, and a number of the others. The defense plays hard and smart, and though I think he certainly has learning to do, I'm all-in on Geno.

I'm not getting the free pass and excuse-making for Geno. Sure, he's a rookie and these kind of games happen, and he has no receivers to throw to, and it was raining in the 2nd half. But Smith's team not only had a stout defense, it had a running game last night, allowing Jets to dominate time of possession and yardage stats, and they were within a FG going into the 4th... a quarter during which Geno threw 3 INTs and the game away. His QB rating was 27. let me say that again... 27. No TDs, no rushing yards, 4 sacks and 3 INTs. Sure, you can point fingers at the WRs, but the guys catching the ball were only half the problem; the rest was the guy throwing the ball. Smith held the ball too long (leading to sacks, INTs and hard-to-catch balls) and never took advantage of his running ability. He looked tentative and in over his head... again. And once again the game was won by the team that sucked less at the end.

Yeah, he may develop into a good NFL QB one day, but he sure ain't one yet.

The Holmes pick killed. But he threw something like 8 passes that were in the red zone (at least 2-- Gates in the end zone, Winslow at the 3-- on scoring plays) that were dropped or mishandled, and two of the picks (AND the fumble) came on balls that were handed over by his receivers to waiting defenders on catchable balls (including the Holmes pick).

He isn't good yet, but he's not bad. He made mistakes (on a short week, on the road, in his second career start), but for the most part they weren't killers, and they mostly seemed the correctable kind. I'll say it again: he did less to lose this game than his receivers did.

Good:
* Powell ran for over 100 yds, extending a lot of drives (this took the pressure off Smith)
* Geno ran for 1st Q TD, then made some big plays -- to Hill for 51yd TD in the 2ndQ, then to Holmes for the game winning 69yd TD in the 4th with the score tied; also made intermediate throws to Kerley and Cumberland for 18yds each (keeping Buff D back on their heels), ending up with solid QBR of 90;
* O-Line gave up no sacks, allowed for a productive running game, ball control offense (10+min time of possession differential) and enough protection for big pass plays (200 yds more total offense);
* Jet D - 8 sacks, coming from everywhere (DL - Wilkerson 2, Richardson 1; LB - Harris, Davis and Pace 1 each; Safety - Landry, Allen 1 each); gave up only 1 big pass play (Chandler 32yd Td); and limited 2 Smith INTs to Buffalo FGs

Bad:
* 2 more Smith INTs (now has 6 INTs to 3 TDs);
* continuing MIA status of Chris Ivory;
* Receivers don't make catches more than they do;
* Tired D giving up big play and a 2-pt conversion to tie game in 4th Q;
* Rex's Red flag management -- i wanted to fire him on the spot for wasting those challenges (why did the broadcasters see these plays better than our upstairs coaches?); luckily, it didn't matter in the end;
* Special Teams -- remember when Jets special teams were...special?

Ugly:
* 20 PENALTIES FOR 168 YDS! This was close to a franchise and league record. We didn't deserve to win, but happily Buffalo sucks worse than us, so once again we win because we sucked less. That's a dangerous game to play.

Rex is terrible with the challenges, I would agree.

To clarify, if I heard this right on last night's broadcast, Geno set a Jets rookie record for passing yards, besting a 287-yard effort from Joe's 1965 season.

Todd only played in six games as a rookie; he did hit 396 yards in a game the next year, but that was the only time he went over 300 that season. Pennington didn't start as a rookie, either. Sanchez never came close to 300 as a rookie.

But it looks like Ken O'Brien hit 351 against Phil Simms's Giants as a rookie. But the Jets lost.

Bad:
* continuing MIA status of Chris Ivory

Hamstring injury in the first quarter.

That front seven of ours... god damn, that's fine stuff. And the safeties are damn impressive, too. Put a semi-functional Revis on here, and this defense is more promising-- and maybe better already-- than the ones that carried this team to back-to-back AFC championships.

If there were, say, mild improvement in both special teams and Geno's turnovers, this team could sneak into a wild card in this weak-sauce conference.

A positively Sanchez-like outing from Geno yesterday and the O-line played like that of the 0-4 Giants. Defense got stuck defending a short field way too often and let up the points even if they weren't getting killed on yards. Walls sucks. Need to just put this game behind you and move on.

When the Jets traded up to pick Mark Sanchez near the top of the draft, i was irritated. Not because i thought Sanchez would be a bust (the analysts universally praised his pro potential), but because i thought they'd be able to keep the traded picks and take Josh Freeman later in the 1st, who i viewed as at least comparable (with more QB experience and better physical tools than Sanchez). And, indeed, they could've, with Freeman taken after their original 1st round draft slot. Now that both QBs have had similarly disappointing careers (and are both out of the league at this point), the Jets can make up the error by signing the just-released Freeman to be Geno's backup. He certainly would give us more options than the useless Brady Quinn, for chrissakes.

Too late; Freeman goes to Minny, which is a playoff-worthy team in search of a QB.
It's a good situation for him, i think.

Meanwhile, the J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS! are getting ready for their annihilation tonight in the Georgia Dome. Spread is 10 and counting. Let's see..., the Jets are on the road, going against a good team (with an all-pro QB) that's pissed about their under-performance this year, and they're playing on Monday night (where home teams win disproportionately), with the Jets coming off another shitty performance, and with no WRs. Um, I'd give the points. I'd give up more points, in fact. If i were a betting man.

Soooooo happy to be wrong about this one! KC, save your money; i'll happily buy you the beer, and Jon, next time i see either of you.

With both Goodson and Ivory finally joining Powell n the backfield, the Jets were able to establish the run right off the bat (avg 5.4 yds/rush), keeping the defense honest and giving Geno some room to operate. Then, the Jets got to play from ahead, allowing Geno to continue running a balanced attack (22 rushes/ 20 passes). Geno got further support from the O-line, which was pretty solid overall despite a few sacks, and from his receivers, who had no drops and made good yards after the catch. Hill actually played (i thought he'd be out) and made a few key grabs in the final drive. The Jets also got solid special teams play (for a change), won the turnover battle (1-0), and committed many fewer penalties. But perhaps most importantly, Geno was playing against the Falcons' shitty, injured defense (ranked near the bottom of the league)... which, you know, helps. But with all that, Geno made no big mistakes, took care of the ball, ran well when he needed to, and was deadly accurate with a short and mid-range passing attackn (i.e., the west coast offense). And when his team was behind with less than 2 minutes to go, he calmly and efficiently burned off the clock while getting them into decent field goal range. And this isn't the first time this season that he's played big in the 4th Q, driving them down field for a win.

So good on you, Mr. Smith. Now, just perform this well and play this smart and under control when everything isn't breaking your way, as it did last night, and you'll really show me something -- something more than Sanchez ever did anyway -- and i'll happily jump on your bandwagon.

Maysonet, an undrafted free agent out of Stony Brook -- an FCS school on Long Island -- signed with the Eagles in May but was cut two weeks later. He spent camp with the Browns and was among their final cuts before spending time on the practice squads of the Colts and Chargers. Maysonet rushed for more than 1,900 yards as a senior last year at Stony Brook.

Jets got called for a similar head-scratcher earlier this year, having too many guys lined up in the middle of the formation against a FG or punt or some such nonsense.

the league is determined to ban any play other than a forward pass which is then "defended" by making a safe (but entirely terrible) tackle using only your arms and only around the runner's waist.

Seems like 20 years ago when the Cowboys would station some of their taller players who had been basketball players in College under the goal posts. They were to jump up to block field goal attempts that were going to barely make it over the crossbar. So the NFL made a rule that said you could not have a player more than 15 yards behind the line of scrimmage jump up to block a field goal.

In a game later that year, another team was attempting a field goal against the Jets. One of the players who was playing safety to guard against a fake, jumped up and down to distract the kicker. The kick missed. But the refs threw the flag, cited this rule, gave the other team another kick, and they made the game winning field goal.

Whether or not the player was more than 15 yards behind the line of scrimmage was unclear from the replays, but the intent was not to block the kick. It was to distract the kicker. I later discussed this with then- Jets announcer Charley Steiner, and he said this was not only wrong but it was the only time the rule was ever invoked.

As Rex said yesterday, it was about time one of those "went in our favor". When he said that, I remembered that other call.

Re: Jets Still Suck 2013, Won't See '14

Ray Lucas says a lot of things. Specifically, Ray Lucas says a lot of things about the mistakes people-- officials, quarterbacks, coaches-- make on a football field. He says them rather forcefully for someone who was as prone to make such errors as Ray Lucas was. Ray Lucas says a lot of things aggressively. Ray Lucas says things in such a way that hints at a person who uses different, less-refined, more-gay-bait-y language when he says things off-camera. Ray Lucas says a lot of things, and you might not want to use Ray Lucas' opinion to buttress points, if you want said points to be taken seriously by reasonable people.

Besides, I don't think that particular call was representative of a 'poor rule' issue as much as it was of a 'awful call' issue.

On another note... it bears noting that the Jets-- these Geno-Smith-led, Revisless, wide-receiver-less, injury-riddled Jets-- are actually in playoff position at this point. [Oh, and that they lost another starting skill-position player (Kerley).]

I'm not sure it's any harder to find a great one now but, in this offense-happy era of pro football, the teams who don't have one today are at more of a disadvantage than they ever were. The days of being a serious contender with just a so-so QB combined with a dominating defense are pretty much over.
Just as an example, five losing teams scored 30 or more points this weekend.

Re: Jets Still Suck 2013, Won't See '14

"Greatness" is always hard to find in any era... that's pretty much the definition. If everyone was "great", then nobody would be.

But the definition of "greatness" can evolve over time. Joe Namath was great in the 1960s (and good in the early 70s), and was an icon of my childhood. Today, his lack of mobility would be more of a problem, where defenses are so fast and built almost entirely around "get to the quarterback" strategies. And his 50% completion rate, and tendency to throw more INTs than TDs (even in his best seasons), would give the opposing offense so many opportunities he would lose his job under the current standards. In fact, Sanchez's career numbers were better and he's been run out of town on a rail, These days, you need to have at least a 60% completion rate, and if you don't throw at least 2:1 TD/INT ratio, you're not a successful QB.

So "greatness" in an NFL QB requires a greater range of talents than it once did. Also, with advances in sports training, health and fitness (and the general evolutionary trend toward a bigger, stronger species), as well as the explosion of money in the game, there is greater ability and motivation than ever to populate the game (almost exclusively) with the freakishly athletic among us. You used to see "big fatties" on the lines, with TEs that blocked, Fullbacks without much speed, and QBs that only had to stand in the pocket and throw. Now those big fatties, TEs and QBs run a 4.5-5.0/40, and fullbacks are virtually extinct. It's only the kickers who can still get away with a normal physique and range of athleticism.

QBs must be as super as those chasing them to survive, but must also have the intellectual ability to understand and read the game at every moment while running for their lives. That makes them special and hard to find. It always has. And the rule changes favoring offense have made the QB the key to winning today, so teams are more reliant than ever on having a "great" one in order to win at the highest levels. But "greatness" is still as rare as ever, and QB injuries more devastating for the team, leaving alot of have-nots scattered across the NFL, including the meadowlands.. and that includes Eli,too, this season (whose 69.7 QB rating would be among Namath's better seasons).

Jets looked alright today getting to 7 wins, showed a lot of things you like to see- big defensive stops, 3rd down conversions, Geno with better timing throwing to a couple of guys before they even broke out of their routes (he knew where they'd be for once!), Ivory running well, a long clock-grinding touchdown drive to ice the game, and Dee Milliner defending passes instead of getting picked on up and down the field!

What didn't look good: Santonio Holmes. as if the pass-dropping wasnt enough, he sounded like me-first loser in the postgame saying "no comment" on will Ryan be back and "he was ok" when asked about Geno before deflecting Geno's credit on the entire team. I'd cut him already, he sounds like a clubhouse cancer and he hasnt done shit on the field in a long time.

Rex Ryan is a good football coach soon to be fired...

Watched this game in its entirety, as a trip to the inlaws for Xmas partying and a Bills blackout precluded my normal nap/Red Zone watching. Lots to enjoy today.

Nice final game for Geno and the Jets.
Rex keeps his job, and it's always nice to knock the Dolphins out of a playoff spot.
Fake kneel on THIS, Marino!

Woody says otherwise. Ryan will remain!

I love ending Miami's season, fuck them.

I'd be mildly shocked if Rex was canned.

And on their field, too, in front of these fair-weather fans. LOVED this.

I was surprised at the number of empty seats.

I'm rarely surprised at the number of empty seats in Miami.

Yeah, but for a NYJ game the empties are usually scarfed up by either transplant New Yorkers or (especially around XMas/New Years week) vacationing New Yorkers.
