May we never forget.

It's strange to me now that my son and his friends (8 years old) are actual functioning human beings. For them 9/11 was something that happened years before they were born. Not much different than the Declaration of Independence or the Kennedy shooting.

It feels strange to me that your son's generation has spent his whole life in a country at war, arming for war, on a war footing, but never quite sure what they're fighting.

My daughter, who was just over two months old on September 11, 2001, had a homework assignment where she had to interview a parent about their memories and thoughts of that day. It led to a lot of questions and a good solid discussion. It hadn't occurred to me that for her, it was something that happened before her memory, and that there was so much about it that I know so well (four planes, the passenger revolt over, Shanksville, the box cutters, the "I don't care about learning how to land a plane" students, and much more) that she was mostly unfamiliar with. Plus, of course, there was my own experiences with that day. I wasn't in New York on the day of the attacks, (I was on vacation) but I was working downtown at the time, and returned to the Ground Zero area less than three weeks later, once downtown opened again. I was able to talk about the smell of the jet fuel, which was still burning, the experiences of my co-workers, who witnesses and were traumatized by the attack, and other visceral memories of what it was like to be downtown in late September of that year.

I watched some of the shows again over the last few nights....I've seen them all but I always get drawn in to them , especially Inside 9/11 on Nat Geo.
