What do you use?

Sometimes I use garlic powder, and sometimes I use the pre-minced stuff.

Ceetar Sep 16 2013 06:03 PM Re: Garlic |
mmmmmm all of it.

LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Sep 16 2013 06:05 PM Re: Garlic |
Fresh, then browned or pureed.
|
Fman99 Sep 16 2013 06:18 PM Re: Garlic |
I use either the pre-minced stuff about 80% of the time, and the other times I use garlic powder, though I mostly only use that on pizza and as a seasoning for meatballs and burgers.

I peel my own for sauce, and use garlic powder to season chicken breasts before breading when I make chicken parm

As with other people who are insistent about not mincing, you're missing a lot of the flavor, girlfriend.

also whole and roasted in the oven is a great snack, though I rarely do that. (something about the wife not liking garlic..)

The one time I peel my own is when I make Bagna Cauda -

sharpie Sep 16 2013 07:32 PM Re: Garlic |
Peel my own all the time. No pre-cut stuff, no powder.

We use a garlic press

d'Kong76 Sep 16 2013 07:50 PM Re: Garlic |
I peel ... use powder only for bbq rubs etc.
|
John Cougar Lunchbucket Sep 16 2013 08:46 PM Re: Garlic |
We use fresh like 95% of the time -- except when we're out of stock, or in a rush, or making something dry, for which we have powder.

Benjamin Grimm Sep 17 2013 06:57 AM Re: Garlic |
Sometimes I use fresh garlic, sometimes the minced from a jar. Depends on how integral the garlic is to the recipe. I sometimes use garlic powder as a seasoning, but never as a substitute for actual garlic.

I peel my own but also use the powder. I use them differently. They're really not meant to replace each other.
|
RealityChuck Sep 17 2013 10:47 AM Re: Garlic |
I use all three. The powder is good when I want to add something quickly, and I like the prechopped, but when I'm serious, I use a regular clove of it.

Another thing you all might want to become familiar with is "Garlic Garlic" from Tastefully Simple

Frayed Knot Sep 17 2013 07:11 PM Re: Garlic |
I voted for cutting my own but I have occasionally used the jarred stuff and, like several of the others, I use the powdered for various uses, particularly in ground beef before making burgers and other such stuff.

How does that differ from the Garlic Bread Seasoning (which I use when throwing together a quick dinner. That and some parmesan on whatever leftovers are in the breadbox).
|
d'Kong76 Sep 17 2013 07:17 PM Re: Garlic |
My poll is flawed, didn't even consider jarred garlic.
|
themetfairy Sep 17 2013 07:25 PM Re: Garlic |
I once used the jarred peeled garlic for the Bagna Cauda, and it didn't work at all. That recipe requires the fresh stuff.

See, that's how it's done. (Unless you're doing the Goodfellas jail-slice thing, which I sometimes do when I aim to impress.)

This thread has made me hungry. Fresh, and we mince. Powder only in emergency situations.

Never seen Goodfellas (I know, I know, it's on the list, spare me) It smells mostly like sweat. I should probably wash the cover again.
