Citizen Coen

A lot of you will have seen this on FB but before that I would have posted it here, so ,here goes.

September 10th was my 19 year anniversary in america, last month I made an appointment at the Emerald Isle Immigration Center in Woodlawn to sit down with an attorney and go about becoming a US citizen. Obviously I could have and should have done this a long time ago, I have no good reasons why I didn't.

With the papers filed I should hear back about my first appointment in a few months, all in all the process is painless(I hope) and should take in and around 6 months.

I feel very happy about this and do not take it lightly.

If however I become loud and obnoxious send me back to Ireland :)

Re: Citizen Coen

Welcome abordick (or potentially anyway)
It would seem to me that citizenship would remove a bunch of red-tape and headaches (or at least potential ones) down the road even if the process to achieve it causes a bunch of red-tape and headaches in the short-term.

Re: Citizen Coen

Certainly it does, for one I can live anywhere in the world and get my pension.....as it is now I MUST live here for 6 months of every year to keep my Green card valid....citizens usually get priority in petitioning for family members to the US permanently. being able to get a US passport, a lot of federal jobs require citizenship,I could be an elected official..... but never the president .

If you don't become loud and obnoxious, what kind of an American citizen would you be?

Just kidding! Congratulations on taking this step.

So, they attorney gave me a cheat sheet of 100 questions and answers that I should study

apparently the interviewer will ask ten random questions of which I need to answer six at least....

Is this question supposed to have right and wrong choices?
Not only are all of them correct as far as I'm concerned, but C, D, and F are virtually the same answer, and A, B, and D are so closely related that they can be lumped in there with the other three.

If all the questions are as vague as this one I'd be afraid to take the test for fear of failing it.
If I did fail do you suppose they'd kick me out even though some parts of my family were here pre-Revolution?

MK had a history teacher last year who would give tests like this and have one right answer in mind. Maddening!

Do they have a study guide for the exam, with clues about what the "right" answers are?

That still doesn't clear things up much.
I'd hate to think someone could get deported or even denied citizenship for picking the 'wrong' answer to that question - and if all the choices are right then what's the point of including the question?

Must be a government operation.

It's a study guide, not a test. The title says questions and
answers. I don't understand the confusion here:

Interviewee: Freedom
Interviewer: That is correct

Well , it went fine, but I swear the Immigration agent was from Russia , think Tina Fey in the Muppets movie, except I had to ask her to repeat several questions because I could not understand her ....she recommended me for citizenship, that's how it works....final approvel coming with oath date.

I felt bad for a lot of the people sitting there waiting, when you get to the 7th floor you are greeted with a loud New Yorker barking " open appointment letter, take it to that officer and take a seat"......so fucking nasty....one you are nervous, I can't imagine how much more amped up you are if English is not your language ...it's a nasty place but I guess they must keep it moving as it was packed.

I got first six questions and that was that portion.......what ocean in on the west coast?....what happened on Sep. 11?....why are there 13 stripes on the flag? , how many senators are there? , what is the name of the National Anthem ?

the I had to read a sentence , then write out a sentence ...

Thanks y'all ...:), it has been great to share this journey with the forum.

It was a wonderful experience this morning , 149 candidates from 61 countries, as each country was called out in alphabetical order the candidate stood and we all clapped, the DR had by far the largest group, I do believe I was the only rep from Ireland . NYC Votes was on hand to register the new citizens to vote. I of course did register and should receive mail in the next few weeks. I was told I will be all set to vote in November.

I have already filled out the application for a passport, that was part of the package they gave us all.

I feel proud to have finally followed though on the process.

Yes, they played Lee Greenwood's God Bless the USA.

There were video messages from Madeline Albright and President Obama .

I can't wait to vote and I suppose I will look forward to jury duty :)

Yeah. I went with 'Obscure Eight Decade Old Movies' for $600 on that one.

I was playing off Willett's quote that MI was now "one of us", a line that was featured prominently in the 1932 cult classic film FREAKS which was also the source of that picture.
As you can probably guess, it was a movie about circus oddities, and while these 'freaks' were certainly the oddballs in the real world, in the circus world they weren't. In the climax of the film all the freaks start a creepy chant declaring one of the 'normal' folks was now "one of us ... one of us" because he was on their turf.

Like I said, kind of obscure.
