Back when Tony L. was doing that, I had given some thought to making custom scorecards -- to accommodate extra substitutions in the 8 spot instead of at the bottom of the card.

But if it's now going to be our thing, I think I may well need to do it after all.

Got my ticket. 6 days until baseball is back!

Maybe. But if the idea is to protect David Wright, having a .160 hitter follow him in the batting order isn't the best idea.

Re: IGT 3/31/2014: WAS @ NYM -- It Gets Early Early Here

This looks like the likely regular lineup going into the season, with E. Young getting some starts too (more or less, depending how C. Young and Lagares do). But instead of flip-flopping Davis and Granderson, how about they just sit Ike against LH pitching until he shows he can, you know, hit. The could play Satin; he hits LH better, even when Ike is going good. I'd even prefer to see Satin lead off -- certainly over C.Young (or Lagares); at least Josh gets on. And Gee hitting 8th only makes sense if the 9th hitter is somebody who gets on for the top of the order. I don't see the point of flipping him with Tejada unless our SS starts showing he can hit. In which case, he makes a better leadoff option than C.Young/Lagares, so you still wouldn't hit him 9th.

That's fair. it's Spring Training for bloggers too..

I think that's part of why Terry doesn't want to lead off with Chris Young. I also don't think he'll bat Lagares that high. but who knows. I'll take that lineup.

Not quite as nice as this March 31st opener: Start Time Weather: 82° F, Wind 9mph out to Leftfield, Sunny, No Precipitation.

The only problem with the weather that day was that I went to the game in shorts (I think it hit 86 at one point). But by the 14th inning things were starting to get a bit chilly and I was underdressed.

Plus he can argue that his slide caused the bad relay and thus stole a run for the Nats.
It's just that there's been a lot of talk about Harper being less reckless this year - and now on the first play he's involved in he takes a face full of shin.

love what Alderson says on that

“This is not ‘hitting for dummies,’?” said Alderson. “Be aggressive? What the hell does that mean? Being aggressive is just swinging from your ass. But it doesn’t accomplish a lot.”

Even out of Alderson’s mouth, it doesn’t sound exactly simple.

“It’s something in between aggressiveness and passivity,” he said. “It’s aggressiveness with judgment, or patiently aggressive. Or aggressively patient.”

Re: IGT 3/31/2014: WAS @ NYM -- It Gets Early Early Here

Thing is, there's almost no point in Williams NOT challenging that play - either it keeps the inning going or he's no worse off than he was before and it was unlikely that he was going to need that challenge for later on. And situations like that are why replay is going to be used more often than some think.

Miscellaneous:

Crowd was very welcoming to Granderson. Lesser cheers for Chris Young and Colon. Biggest cheers for Wright, Harvey and Wheeler.

I think Valverde is basically ticking dynamite but he was throwing 92 and got the big Ks, so good for him.

Davis does not look at all improved at the plate.

Not clear enough on the rules I guess, I thought managers couldn't challenge from the 7th inning on?

From the 7th on umpires can trigger a challenge on their own if they feel the call was iffy. This is in addition to managers' challenges if they didn't use it up in the early innings.

But of course, this preserves the "yelling at the umpires" aspect of the game so managers can come out at anytime and yell at the umpires to review it. They just get to be listened for sure once in the first six innings.

Re: IGT 3/31/2014: WAS @ NYM -- It Gets Early Early Here

quick thoughts:

Kiner moment of silence was so silent you could hear the wind in the microphone.

Lagares looked real good.

Bullpen did not, but some fluky stuff bloops too and what seemed like a poor strike zone.

Beer selection took a big step up.

Zimmerman still throws what that stupid little loop.

New the7line shop looks nice. was busy.

Mr. Softee stand wasn't real popular.

New "in-game hosts" for all the between innings stuff. They have an official title but it's not really any different. silly stuff, including a Simon Says bit with Cuppy the DD mascot.

WHen I got home, the Mets were up by one with two out in the ninth when I turned off the radio. Now I see they lost. Bleh.
