Thank You for Not MFYing: Threading the ALCS

G-Fafif
Oct 11 2013 06:46 AM

The MFYs' archrivals, the Red Sox, will take on the team that knocked the MFYs out of the postseason the last three times they had the chance, the Tigers. From that perspective, they are both worthy combatants for the American League pennant.

Your Red Sox and your Tigers have never entered the squared postseason circle against one another. They did engage each other manfully for titles in 1915 (Red Sox by 2 1/2), 1967 (Red Sox by 1), 1972 (Tigers by 1/2 -- strike year with games that went unplayed) and 1988 (Red Sox by 1) before Detroit suddenly found geography and shifted its stripes to the Central Division (which sounds very Soviet). This is only the second ALCS between original junior circuit members that have stayed permanently put -- not like your carpetbagging Baltimore MFYs who moved to Manhattan in 1903; the other was in 2007, when the Boston Americans edged the Cleveland Blues in seven games.

Many find the Red Sox and their Nation overbearing. I imagine the good people of the East Bay have had it with the Tigers, particularly the habit Justin Verlander has of tossing his glove on the mound and destroying their dreams. But save for the disgusting presence of Shane Victorino, I have no complaints with this matchup.

Gotta love a (an?) MFYless ALCS.

I was talking for Bostons sake when I said knock him out. And I thought they would have to do that. I'd have left him in myself, using my bump strategy. And he would have had probably three bumps. That was a quick hook. I think 108 pitches is of no concern in the post season. Boston didn't even have to knock him out. Leyland surrendered him.

Re: Thank You for Not MFYing: Threading the ALCS

The cop in the bullpen is the best. He's celebrating more than anyone and when Hunter crashes to the ground he gives way to the players, then decides his best role is to make sure the door is open after it's already opened. The whole time he never loses his grip on the snack (peanuts? Seeds?) in his fist.

The thing about Gameday is that it really makes you wonder about some things, like why Justin Verlander had two pickoff attempts of the slow of foot Big Papi.

TOTALLY TRUE FACT: "Koji Uehara" is modern Japanese for "Goose."

The Sox are getting all the breaks a team needs to eke out four of these.

That was something I was going to mention in the 'Closerland' thread -- that about 1/3 of the guys who led their team in saves this season either didn't start or didn't finish the year in that job. In some of the cases it was injuries (Parnell) but in others a lack of getting the job done forced a change somewhere between opening day and closing.

In fact, all four remaining teams are using a guy who wasn't in that role on opening day.
- In the case of Uehara and Boston he was like their 4th choice after making some big trades over the last two years -- Andrew Bailey (from Oakland) Joel Hanrahan (Pirates) -- trying to fill that spot. Uehara's first save didn't come until late June.
- Tigers were still revisiting the Jose Valverde angle early in the year (he had 9 saves for them) and were trying to groom youngster Bruce Rondon (1) for the job if Valverde should revert to late-2012 form (he did). When neither worked out they turned to Benoit but that wasn't until mid-June.
- Cards were using Edward Mujica (their third guy in three years) who was cruising along with 35 saves and a sub-2.00 ERA until blowing up in September [11.05 ERA; .514 BAA] which forced the late-season switch to Rosenthal.
- Dodgers signed Brandon League to a big deal (3 yrs/$22.5) last winter with the intention of handing him the closers job. After 4 blown saves and a 6.00 ERA in mid-June he got the boot and, while still on the roster, barely gets used these days. Jansen started closing in late June.

Underrated hero of the 2013 Sox: Koji Uehara. I recall him getting smacked around when with the O's.

Funny thing about him; except for his first year in MLB (Orioles - 2009) he's had sub-1.00 WHiP numbers each year [career = .829] and has a career 322-to-38 K/BB ratio, and yet this is now his 3rd team in 5 years.
Now granted one of those switches was in the deal that brought Chris Davis to Baltimore so I doubt the O's are crying in their crab cakes (although Chris Davis wasn't CHRIS DAVIS then) but the Rangers then released him at the end of last season and I don't recall too much off-season clamoring over the guy prior to him signing a one-year $5mil deal with the Sawx (about the same as what he had been making). And of course had the Sox known what they were getting they probably would have turned to him sooner for the closer's spot rather than deal away four players for Joel Hanrahan the very next week.

The Tigers performance - or lack thereof - on the basepaths has been a blessing to the Red Sox. Miggy's stumbling into an out at home plate last night is an obvious example, but there have also been a number of times when their slow runners were only able to advance from 2nd to 3rd on well-placed hits and then ended up stranded there.

Amazing that the networks are so hard up for prime-time starts (and MLB so hard up for the cash that the networks will pay for said time-slots) that the game time for this Game 6/ALCS is contingent on NL game and therefore not decided until nearly midnight on the day before.
That's gotta suck for the players as well as the ticket holders.

Buchholz took 15 minutes to deliver the first 22 pitches of the game (yeah, I timed it). It's too depressing to do the math on that one for a per/pitch rate.
Not that some of the batters aren't at least partially responsible for that pace, but most of that was on the pitcher.

Despite all the promises and projections about time limits when replay rules are introduced, the reviews never go as quickly as in the plans.

According to my year-long, one-inning save study, a closer with a three run lead has better than a 97% chance of closing out the game.
And that's just a generic stat. Throw in the fact that Boston has a hotter-than-hot closer coming in to face the bottom of a fairly cold lineup and I think it's safe to say that things are looking even better than that for the Red Sox.

Elbows on the basepaths, fun-policing JoseJoseJoseJose for home run celebrations, purposeful "accidental" interference with throws, spikes-up sliding on DP attempts, CONSTANT plate-crowding... by all reports, he's a decent, accommodating human being off-field, but on-field, he's what fans of his teams call a "gamer," and what most other people with eyes call "dirty like a brothel's sheets."

I believe my dislike for Victorino came from the days when the Phillies were acting as the fun police and calling out Jose Reyes for being too celebratory.

Just like the 2013 Cardinals, it was a total hypocritical double standard bullshit pot-calling-kettle-black situation, with Victorino as happy to showboat as anyone. Is Victorino still a tool? Hard to say.
