Re: Postseason Participant Profile - Atlanta Braves

McCann and Gattis (who played positions other than catcher) combined for 41 home runs this year.
Chris Johnson and Freeman were among the top 10 hitters in the NL in Batting average.

As for other info, I'm checking my rule book to see if its possible for both teams to lose a series.

Re: Postseason Participant Profile - Atlanta Braves

When I think of the Braves it is usually through the prism of the Mets circa 1999/2000/2001 era. In my Mets fanhood(mid to late 90's) no other team has come close to that rivalry for me, it was my first taste of raw baseball emotion and I loved it. It seemed every pitch counted.

Re: Postseason Participant Profile - Atlanta Braves

It might but I likely won't reminisce about it like those years.

Braves’ Kimbrel Is King of Remaining Closers

Throughout his career, Mariano Rivera had the distinction of being considered the game’s best relief pitcher, even though in almost any given season you could point to a pitcher who had outperformed him in terms of statistics. From Trevor Hoffman to Eric Gagne to Koji Uehara, there has almost always been a player who had a better earned run average, or more saves, or a lower WHIP. But Rivera, based on his particularly incredible postseason record and the air of confidence he gave the Yankees, has been the king of closers since he assumed the role in 1997.

Now that Rivera has retired, the crown is likely to pass to Craig Kimbrel, Atlanta’s wunderkind, who will begin his reign Thursday, when the Atlanta Braves face the Los Angeles Dodgers in a National League division series. But while Kimbrel has been fantastic, and could get even better, comparing anyone to Rivera seems unfair.

In terms of raw statistics, Kimbrel is a monster. Over the last three seasons, he has a 1.48 earned run average in 206.2 innings. He has struck out 14.9 batters per nine innings and has a WHIP of 0.871, better than Rivera’s career mark, by far. Even with a drop in some of his statistics this season, his average of 13.2 strikeouts per nine innings was better than Rivera could ever record. His ability to pile up strikeouts and keep runners off base is remarkable.

Of course, any Rivera fan will tell you that regular-season statistics are nice, but it is in the postseason when legends are born. In that regard, Kimbrel has yet to measure up, though he has never allowed a run-scoring hit in a playoff game.

Having pitched in five postseason games entering this season, Kimbrel’s numbers are similar to his regular-season statistics, with eight strikeouts in five and a third innings and one hit allowed. Unfortunately, the hit was a part of an inning he would like to forget.

In Game 3 of the 2010 division series against the San Francisco Giants. Kimbrel, a rookie, came on with a 2-1 lead in the ninth inning. He retired Cody Ross on a pop-up, walked Travis Ishikawa, then struck out Andres Torres. One out from securing the victory, he allowed a single to Freddy Sanchez that sent Ishikawa to second. A quick hook by Bobby Cox led to Kimbrel watching as Mike Dunn and Peter Moylan combined to let both runners score. While only one of the runs was earned — a Brooks Conrad error led to the game-winning run — Kimbrel was saddled with the loss.

For comparison, Rivera’s only postseason loss came in Game 7 of the 2001 World Series, which was the 52nd of his 96 career postseason appearances.

To ding a player for a game that was largely out of his hands may not seem fair, but you have to operate on a pretty high level to compare to Rivera. It may have been surprising for a great reliever like Dennis Eckersley to surrender a game-winning home run to Kirk Gibson in the 1988 World Series, but for Rivera to falter was simply out of the realm of possibilities until the one time it happened.

Kimbrel is 25 and seems destined for an amazing career. He has the talent to be the game’s best reliever for many years to come. And that is what he will have to be to match Rivera in any real way.

I really can't believe the amount of hatred and bile I had for the Braves circa 1995-2001. I expect that a big portion of it was me being in my 20s and basically being an asshole, but that team really did drive me crazy.

I got 2. Just to prove I don't give a shit about the Braves. If I'd tried harder I could have got at least 4. But if the choice is is between David Justice, Marquis Grissom, Fred McGriff, or Chipper Jones, how long do I really want to think about it?

The fact that the Mets never beat then in Atlanta hurt, it probably wasnt even much of a rivalry but it was fun.How I hated seeing Brian fucking Jordan coming to bat.

I also got two. I don't give a shit either but I really tried. Maybe I shouldn't admit that.

Why would you hate the Braves? They did what they were supposed to do. Me? I hated Wilpon. Rey Ordonez taking 500+ plate appearances every season? And then you'd go to a game and every two innings there be some Rey Ordonez infomercial on the Diamond Vision exhorting everybody to vote for Rey for the ASG and then Howie Rose practically having a seizure every time Rey caught a grounder, as if he was the best baseball player ever to play baseball. Butch Huskey? The Mets got what they deeserved. One first place finish in 25 years. I don't know how Doubleday would've topped that run.

Re: Postseason Participant Profile - Atlanta Braves

Braves tie this series up with a 4-3 win, Kimbrell came in for the four out save and walked a few in the 9th, very close call at 2nd as Gordon tries to steal and a great throw from Laird gets the call from the ump. Ron and Cal thought it was a bad call.

Good game.
