Roster Turnover

By my unofficial count, Wilfredo Tovar will be the 53rd Met to appear this season, which will fall second only to the 54 put up by Bing Devine's 1967 team. Both teams sort of came in three waves --- the guys who broke camp, the midseason replacements brought in from outside the organization, and the lateseason callups. Guys who have gone pole to pole: [list:kcozgs8b][*:kcozgs8b]Dillon Gee[/*:m:kcozgs8b] [*:kcozgs8b]LaTroy Hawkins[/*:m:kcozgs8b] [*:kcozgs8b]Daniel Murphy[/*:m:kcozgs8b][/list:u:kcozgs8b] That's it. Those three guys have survived a small high school's worth of teammates coming and going. I'd hardly be shocked to find out Tovar isn't the last, either. This record is still within reach.

Most ephemeral tenures among 2013 Mets: 5. Shawn Marcum 4. Collin McHugh 3. Brandon Lyon 2. Rick Ankiel 1. Aaron Laffey (I will forever think of him as the man who broke the MbtN franchise) Oddly enough, there are some guys for whom the imprint of their 2013 tenure is fading in my mind, even as they are currently on the team --- Frank Francisco, Aaron Harang, Sean Henn... those guys weren't ever on the 2013 Mets. Oh, wait, they are currently on the 2013 Mets? Really? I mean, Sean Henn... tell me that guy isn't Tim Hamulack trying to sneak back onto the team under a different name.

I think the Hennster could stick around. Lefty and all. Yeah, Laffey. I even have an unpublished post apologizing for my MIA-ness but don't have the energy to publish that.

Well, they're officially ending Wheeler's season. Would it kill them to add another? Do they know glory is within their grasp? OK, you probably don't want to burn Schwinnie's last option, but be creative. Giancarlo Alvarado could make a start or two, and people would briefly freak out when they hear that the team has added somebody named Giancarlo. Matt Fox? Cory Wade? Eric Campbell hit .314 this season. Is nobody curious?

Looking at that list reminds me of how much we've heard this year about the New York team that's been "devastated" by injuries. After all, the only guys they've had go wire to wire this season have been: Robinson Cano Vernon Wells Ichiro Suzuki Lyle Overbay Chris Stewart Austin Romine CC Sabathia Andy Pettitte Phil Hughes Ivan Nova David Phelps Hiroki Kuroda Mariano Rivera David Robertson Joba Chamberlin and maybe even a few more that I'm missing. They were still missing a few of the guys they preferred to have rather than some of the above, but still, such hardship it must have been to muddle through with only that crew available for each and every game.

Well, their injuries occurred last fall and carried over into this season. You also need to take into account that being a Yankee injures the spirit. Gravely, in fact.

I'm still not going to spend too much time crying for a team that had six starters, all of whom were on the roster from day one, start 149 of their 155 games.

Nova wasn't an end-to-ender. He wasn't on the DL, but he spent some time (3 games) in the minors to get straightened out after he was getting sauteed mid year. Later

Or, hell, bring up Havens, who's on the 40 (albeit injured?), and have him try to pinch-walk.
