This Byrdak Could Have Flown (But Didn't)

Anybody here know about the Lifetime Pass? I didn't until I read this terrific piece by Chris Jones in ESPN The Magazine on Tim Byrdak's journey to rejoin the Mets for at least 22 more days on the big-league roster.

Trying to do the math here. They don't say it explicitly, but it looks like getting to the end of the season, even if the team has to carry him there, gets him over the line plus four more days for good measure.

If he needed 22 days and he was recalled Sept. 1, then tomorrow, 9/22, would get him to eight full years. The final week will hopefully earn him the Platinum card, which gets an ex-player 10% off Cracker Jack for the length of one homestand (Opening Day and Subway Series not included).

Eight ears is impressive.

I had never heard about it until a few years ago when I got to see one on display.* It's as cool as described above.

Can't remember where you first read about the golden ticket? It was probably in 'Willie Wonka'

Aside from the game passes and Cracker Jack, does attaining eight full years add anything to his pension?

Eight ears to hold you. Or hear you.

43 days seems to be the magic number, though 10 years is big, too. http://benefitsbryancave.com/major-leag ... -benefits/

Thanks. I remember when it used to be 4 years to vest. Didn't know if that had been raised or lowered. 43 days. Wow! Later

It is amazing how far the MLB Players Association has advanced player benefits. It's amazing that only 43 days of service makes a player fully vested in the MLB pension plan and one game on a MLB roster qualifies one for lifetime medical benefits.
