Roster 2014

Edgy MD
Sep 29 2013 05:43 PM

Hard to imagine an opening day as much shrowded in mystery as the Mets are looking at for 2014. The team has a lot of questions, but a lot of leverage as well. An unusually large percentage of the team has options. Only two (two!) have commitments beyond next season. Heck, almost as few have commitments beyond this season (counting the likes of Santana's buyout as a commitment).

So I post the roster, knowing projecting now will get us a picture very different from where they are going. Duda and Davis, for instance, remain until/unless the Mets make a change, even though it's considered unlikely both survive the offseason.

Edgy, I just got a small picture.
My PC also said "No longer available".
Could you please post the roster in a different format?
Thanks.

Re: Roster 2014

Notable is that there is a huge amount of leverage in the bullpen and no small amount in the rotation. Only two relievers don't have options, and Henn is the type that you feel comfortable removing from from the 40, and move on quickly from if he gets claimed on waivers. Even before hitting the marketplace, the team has a handful of guys not yet on the 40 who could end up making the team.

The real drama is on offense, where few have been quite productive enough to commit to, but fewer have options, and many are about to start qualifying for decent money.

Tejada's on your roster. You don't need two backup shortstops. In fact, you can take Satin over Q, Turner or Tejada. SOMEONE needs to be able to hit on the bench.

Well, sure, but (a) it's really not going to shake out this way, (b) Turner remains a very poor shortstop, and (c) Q is on the roster and out of options. Tovar could pass 'em all by opening day.

Most likely, you end up with two backup infielders --- one who can field and one who can hit. This look is hardly ideal, but I think an accurate representation of where they line up.

If and when Q gets non-rostered, that'll clear up a lot. A lot of guys eligible to get removed from the 40 before they add minor leaguers in anticipation of the Rule V:

Re: Roster 2014

Adam Rubin says...

NEW YORK -- Here is a player-by-player primer on each Met, broken down by contract status:

Free agents
• LaTroy Hawkins, right-handed reliever. Hawkins appears the most likely to be re-signed, even though he will be 41 years old next season. He was productive stepping into the closer’s role after Bobby Parnell's injury, while dialing his fastball up to 95 mph.

• Daisuke Matsuzaka and Aaron Harang, right-handed starters. Terry Collins liked Dice-K, so perhaps it is not out of the realm of possibility to re-sign him as a fifth-starter competitor who would allow Noah Syndergaard, Rafael Montero and Jacob deGrom to open the season in the minors. For that matter, Harang fits that profile, too.

• Tim Byrdak and Pedro Feliciano, left-handed relievers. Both returned from shoulder injuries after missing substantial time. It likely is time for the Mets to move on from both, but their careers do not appear over yet.

• David Aardsma, right-handed reliever. Productive, although he wilted with too much use. Aardsma could be useful to re-sign if the price is right.

• Frank Francisco, right-handed reliever. The ex-closer collected $6.5 million this season while mostly nursing a sore elbow and irking Mets officials. No chance he returns.

• Johan Santana, left-handed starter. The one-time ace wants to pitch again after undergoing a second surgery to repair a torn anterior capsule in his left shoulder. If he is capable, he very likely would sign elsewhere. The best news: Santana's $31 million owed in 2013, including a buyout of next season, comes off the books.

Signed to contracts

• Jonathon Niese, left-handed starter. After missing nearly two months with a rotator cuff strain, Niese finished strongly and should help anchor the 2014 rotation. His salary jumps to $5 million next season, up from $3 million this year.

• David Wright, third baseman. The captain sees a major salary bump. Wright will earn $20 million in 2014 -- a raise of $9 million.

Arbitration eligible

• Ike Davis and Lucas Duda, first basemen. It is likely one gets traded, although there is a slim chance Duda opens the season at Triple-A with Davis at Citi Field. Davis made $3.125 million this year and could receive an ever-so-slight pay cut. The Mets insist he will not be non-tendered. Duda, first-time eligible for arbitration, likely only makes $700,000 or $800,000 in 2014.

• Parnell, closer. Doctors assure Collins that Parnell will be fine for spring training after undergoing surgery to repair a herniated disk in his neck, but the manager is concerned. Vic Black would be the alternative. Parnell’s salary should creep upward after he earned $1.7 million while converting 22 of 26 save chances.

• Dillon Gee, right-handed starter. Gee missed 200 innings by one frame. He will be first-time eligible for arbitration.

• Daniel Murphy, second baseman. ESPNNewYork.com hears the Mets will listen on offers for Murphy, but the best bet is he is the Opening Day second baseman. Murphy is due to get another raise after earning $2.925 million this season.

• Ruben Tejada, shortstop. After the broken leg mends, Tejada needs to seriously demonstrate his work ethic to the organization. Still, that may not be enough if the Mets can find the right external shortstop addition.

• Justin Turner, infielder. The best bet is that he serves as a backup infielder again next season.

• Eric Young Jr., outfielder/second baseman. The Mets recognize they need his speed in the lineup. So Young should be in the starting lineup somewhere next season, whether that’s in the outfield or at second base.

• Scott Atchison, right-handed reliever. Believe it or not, while Atchison is 37 years old, he does not have enough MLB service time to be eligible for free agency. He is a definite non-tender candidate in December.

• Mike Baxter, outfielder. Baxter should be arbitration eligible as a Super 2. Regardless, his 40-man roster spot appears in jeopardy. That does not preclude Baxter from being re-signed to a minor league deal. The 2013 Baxter, who hit .189, did not resemble the 2012 Baxter. The Mets believe the shoulder injury suffered in Santana's no-hitter may have hurt Baxter's swing.

• Omar Quintanilla, shortstop. The Mets view Q as a backup, not a full-time player.

Under control

• Matt Harvey, right-handed starter. The question remains: Tommy John surgery or no Tommy John surgery? Harvey should be airing it out in about six weeks, perhaps in the Arizona Fall League, to see whether the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow will hold up.

• Zack Wheeler, right-handed starter. Wheeler should be good for 200 innings in 2014.

• Black, right-handed reliever. If Parnell is not ready to close because of a slow recovery from surgery, the hard-throwing Black is the primary alternative. Otherwise, Black projects as handling the eighth inning next season.

• Travis d’Arnaud, catcher. He’s the guy behind the plate, but needs to shorten his swing after hitting .202 in his first major league season.

• Juan Lagares and Matt den Dekker, center fielders. Lagares had a franchise-rookie-record 15 outfield assists and is very likely the full-time center fielder in 2014, even with some offensive difficulties. Den Dekker is just as likely to open next season in Triple-A. The Mets do not plan to platoon Lagares and den Dekker in the majors -- not in April, anyway.

• Josh Edgin and Scott Rice, left-handed relievers. Both are coming off surgeries. The Mets need to find a lefty from outside the organization they can trust, but Rice and Edgin could be useful complements.

• Jeurys Familia and Gonzalez Germen, right-handed relievers. Both should vie for a bullpen role in 2014.

• Jeremy Hefner, right-handed starter. Hefner will miss most, if not all, of 2014 recovering from Tommy John surgery.

• Anthony Recker, catcher. After a nearly full season in the majors, Recker could find himself in Triple-A in 2014. Sandy Alderson has suggested he needs to find a veteran catcher in case d’Arnaud’s injury propensity continues.

• Josh Satin, infielder. A year after being taken off the 40-man roster and clearing waivers, Satin is now viewed as a valuable righty bat for the bench who can get on base. Look for him to have a backup role in 2014.

• Carlos Torres, right-handed starter/reliever. Torres would appear to have a legitimate shot as the long reliever/spot starter.

• Jordany Valdespin, infielder. The Biogenesis suspension is his latest baggage. It would be surprising if he makes it to spring training as a Met.

• Greg Burke, Robert Carson and Sean Henn, relievers. If they survive the winter on the 40-man roster, they look Triple-A bound.

• Andrew Brown, Juan Centeno, Wilmer Flores, Zach Lutz and Wilfredo Tovar, 51s. Centeno and Recker could be the Triple-A catchers. Flores likely is ticketed for Las Vegas, according to Collins, if the infielder is not going to be a starter at the major league level. Lutz and Tovar probably open next season in the minors, too. Brown’s 40-man roster spot is an open question.

• Jenrry Mejia, right-handed starter. Mejia showed flashes as a starting pitcher before surgery to clean out his right elbow. He is a logical fifth-starter competitor in spring training.

• Kirk Nieuwenhuis, outfielder. Getting snubbed for a September call-up does not bode well for Nieuwenhuis’ future with the organization.

Orange guys should all have options. But I'm seeing a lot of disagreement about the option stati of Davis and Duda.

The report above also claims that Scot Atchison doesn't have enough time on his card to qualify as a free agent, which is some darn surprising news.

They specifically brought up Duda when they did to avoid burning the option this year, so he definitely has one. Or was that to delay arbitration? That was Tejada with the year of control stuff right? So many roster machinations going on this year..

As for Davis.. I trust @tpgmets on Twitter. He's usually spot on with this arbitration/options/etc stuff. He tweeted at Rubin about why Davis wouldn't have an option, seeming to think he should, but I don't think he got a response.

Matz missed a lot of time (more than one year?) due to arm surgery.
But this year he seemed to have recovered his stuff and should be back on the top prospect lists. I'd keep him.
Another guy I'd like to see them keep is Aderlin Rodriguez.
http://www.baseball-reference.com/minor ... drig001ade

He's shown good power, without a lot of strikeouts, while playing in some pitcher friendly [parks/ leagues. He was hurt this year, and part of the prior year. That may have stopped him from being drafted last year. From his defensive numbers it looks like he would benefit from a full time move to first base. I feel he would be taken early if left exposed to the Rule V draft. He will be playing in the Arizona Fall League. I'm not sure if he will play enough on that shared team to show if he should or shouldn't be kept.

By "kept" I meant protected.
Just because a player isn't added to the 40 man roster, it doesn't mean he is lost. The article I linked shows several players who were exposed to the Rule V Draft last year, were not taken, and were resigned to minor league contracts to remain in the organization this year.

Also heard that the other Los Angeles team had claimed Mike Baxter from the Mets. Waiting for confirmation.

Is it still a rule that teams must wait until after the World Series to make moves? MLB put the rule in a few years ago so news about moves wouldn't take attention from the post-season games.

I don't know that it's a written rule so much as it is a request from the Commish's office not to make attention-grabbing moves that would take attention away from playoff baseball.
The original incident was, of course, instituted in response to Steinbrenner announcing a hiring (or was it firing?) of Billy Martin on the day of a World Series Game 7 figuring that if his team wasn't good enough to get the headlines in October then he'd bump the WS off the back pages of the newspapers in the largest city in the country with off the field news.
Not surprisingly, the Steinbrenner for HoF backers conveniently tend to forget stuff like this when listing his "contributions" to the sport.

Re: Roster 2014

One of the more dramatic parts of this purging is that it really strips down their pitching staff to the bare bones. They are left with exactly 14 pitchers on the roster, and that includes St. Lucie's own Hansel Robles, who I'm adding only to keep a spot warm for whoever they end up bringing in or putting on the roster later.

They are also left with only one bullpen lefty, whereas they finished the season with five or so.

Something's cookin'. Dunno what.

Interesting that everybody fleeing the coop is a pitcher. Gives them a chance for a reset, I guess, and a chance for rookies to push against veterans for spots. But they're probably going to have to sign at least one guaranteed vet to a multi-year deal, if only relatively modestly so.

In fact, while his failure seemed a fait accompli two years ago, the last two seasons he's shown just enough puncher's power, just enough plate discipline and just enough defensive aptitude to sort of edge back into the picture as at least a potential backup.

Anyhow, that's why I'm thinking he gets re-signed. Won't take a great performance to fashion a better career than his brother.

That didn't take long to revert back to the previous thingie. I wonder what makes a guy jump at a minor league offer so early in the process. I guess having an ERA that precludes a major league offer makes you happy to grab a deal that's offered you, but there were reportedly at least three teams interested in him. He was clearly a top target for a minor league deal.

I guess a team's interest can dry up pretty quickly, and they few qualms about quickly moving on to the next targer when it comes to offering minor league contracts.

Mets shield former top pick Matz from Rule 5 Draft
Southpaw joined by righties Walters, deGrom, Goeddel on 40-man roster

NEW YORK -- Coming off a season in which he reestablished himself on the prospect map, former Mets top pick Steven Matz is now guaranteed to continue his comeback with the organization that drafted him.

The Mets added Matz to their 40-man roster on Wednesday, along with right-handers Jeff Walters, Jacob deGrom and Erik Goeddel, protecting those players from being selected in next month's Rule 5 Draft.

Major League regulations stipulate that any player who signed his first professional contract before age 19 and has been in the organization for five seasons, or who signed after age 19 and has been in the organization for four seasons, is eligible to be selected in the Rule 5 Draft if he's not on the 40-man roster. Thus, players such as Matz must be protected, while more recently drafted prospects such as Brandon Nimmo and Gavin Cecchini are safe.

If selected, a player must remain on his new team's active roster or disabled list all season, or be offered back to his original club for half of the original $50,000 selection fee. The Mets made one selection in last year's Rule 5 Draft, plucking left-hander Kyle Lobstein from the Rays and immediately flipping him to the Tigers for cash.

The Mets' protection decisions were less obvious this year than last November, when they added Zack Wheeler and five others to the 40-man roster. Four of those six wound up appearing in the Majors.

Matz, a second-round selection and the Mets' first pick in the 2009 First-Year Player Draft, did not make his professional debut until '12 due to left elbow issues that led to Tommy John surgery. He dominated down the stretch that season, however, and picked up where he left off with a 2.62 ERA, 121 strikeouts and 38 walks in 106 1/3 innings this year for Class A Savannah. He later tacked on 12 2/3 shutout innings with 17 strikeouts and two walks in the South Atlantic League playoffs.

The Stony Brook, N.Y., native is still only 22 years old and could rise rapidly up the Minor League ranks this summer, provided he can stay healthy.

deGrom, 25, nearly earned a September callup after going 7-7 with a 4.51 ERA over three Minor League levels, advancing from Class A St. Lucie all the way to Triple-A Las Vegas. The Mets' 19th-ranked prospect, deGrom could compete for a rotation spot as soon as this spring.

Walters, 26, led the Minor Leagues with 38 saves, five more than the next-closest pitcher. He accumulated all of them at Double-A Binghamton, posting a 2.09 ERA in 56 innings while priming himself for a big league debut at some point in 2014.

Goeddel, 24, went 9-7 with a 4.37 ERA in 25 starts for Binghamton, striking out 125 batters with 58 walks in 134 innings. He could open next season as high as at Las Vegas, potentially alongside blue-chip prospects Noah Syndergaard and Rafael Montero at the top of the rotation.

Some of the higher-profile players the Mets left unprotected are left-hander Chase Huchingson, who is currently serving a 50-game suspension for a second violation of Minor League Baseball's drug policy, and outfielder Cory Vaughn, who batted .252 with 10 homers over three levels this season.

The Mets' 40-man roster now stands at 40, meaning they will need to make cuts once they begin acquiring free agents. Infielder Jordany Valdespin and reliever Scott Atchison are among the Mets who could be at risk.

Well, they're set on outfield defense.

Not a lot of big league starts on their roster beyond Niese and Gee. Wheeler has 17. Torres has 15. Mejia has 11. A little more than a season's worth among them.

No room left on their roster, which suggests to me that their next transacton looks like a trade. I may be overthinking that.

I think so too. But for the moment, anyway, Tovar does have an opportunity in front of him. All he has to do is have a better spring than Ruben Tejada (who likes to show up late, fat, and lazy)* and he's a starting major league shortstop.

* Yes, I know I'm exaggerating. What's Ruben gonna do about it? File a grievance?

Re: Roster 2014

Lots of craziness and fun-ness transpiring at the winter meetings, unless your name is deGrom or Lagares. Life got a little more complicated for those two. For Brown, too, but he has the advantage of being out of options, so Lagares skates to the side for a bit while the Mets attempting to sort out the Davis-Duda conflict.

Velasquez is a curious little bit of pilfery, as the Mets gobble him up a cold week after he got signed by Minnesota after a few years in the purgatory of indy ball. One can perhaps the Mets were scouting him there and were miffed at beaten to the draw by Minnesota and took note when they didn't add him to their AAA roster. Mets get the player, while Minnesota eats any signing bonus they might have given the guy.

Hope the team ordered a whole bunch of small-cap D's for their jerseys because the clubhouse is going to be crazy with them, with a D', a DE, and a DEN all at once.

why? the value of Lagares and dDekker is the same... defensive CFer, without much of a bat. But Granderson and Young are going to play everyday, and EY most days, and they can all play CF (to a greater or lesser degree), so the Mets are better served having guys on the bench who can give you some pop as late-inning PHers from either side. Plus, Lagares and dDekker have options; Brown doesn't, and he's played some CF too As for Duda, he'll probably end up at 1B with Ike being moved, so that will make room for a LHed bat for the bench, but neither Lagares and dDekker can give you that. I think there is no way dDekker makes the opening day roster and the only way Lagares does is if Murphy is traded and they think EY can play 2b everyday, or if they decide EY is just a utility player and start Lagares in CF.

Re: Roster 2014

so with 37 guys on the 40-man roster (including Harvey, who'll be on the 60-day IR and so i think can be taken off the 40 for next season), what is Sandy looking for to fill out the roster? Or does he leave spots open for in-season moves?

I think he'd like to sign one more vet SPer and one more vet reliever, and probably a SS if he can find one better than Tejada.

Re: Roster 2014

you missed the re-signing of Jeremy Hefner. No longer a free agent, nor on the 40 man, so he'll get well acquainted with PSL doing Tommy John rehab. Perhaps SNY can get a zany weekly show going, Jeremy and Matt's crazy Port St. Lucie adventures!

It can be romantic comedy even. Matt bangs every super model in Florida while Jeremy (and wife Sarah) sadly shake their heads and repeatedly try to set him up with one of Sarah's friends. After Matt agrees and does his usual pump and dump routine, he realizes that perhaps she really is the woman for him, and embarks on a quest to win her heart. Just as he's about to do so, he meets old flame Anna V and they spend a night together that Sarah's friend is heartbroken and breaks off contact. Matt then gets called up for a "prove you're healthy" start in late September, and after no-hitting the Phillies for 5 innings and getting pulled because of a pitch count, she's waiting for him in the tunnel to forgive him.

Cut to the late November wedding on the Pitcher's Mound at Citi Field.

The End.

Re: Roster 2014

If they re-signed Hefner to a minor league contract, who pays his medical bills if he's no longer covered by the MLP Health plan? Is there a minor league player medical plan? Will the team do it in good faith because they expect him to be a productive pitcher for them again?
