2013-14 Manager Shuffle

Now that Terry has signed his extension, the current landscape shows only the Nationals, Cubs, and Mariners looking for pilots although that could certainly change as others are coming up on the end of deals and/or have options that need to be picked up.

- The Cubs, yesterday, fired Dale Sveum with a year left on his deal, a move thought by some to clear the way for a run at Illinois native/Northwestern alum and soon-to-be FA Joe Girardi. Girardi has talked about wanting to solidify his status sooner rather than later.

- Eric Wedge, citing various unspecified differences with the front office, chose to walk away rather than even talk about a new deal. Not that the front office had offered him one but he claims that he was uninterested even if they had.

- and Davey Johnson had agreed prior to the season starting, that 2013 would be his final one for the Nationals. Or maybe he didn't and the expiration date was forced on him; Davey seems to alternate between saying this was his idea and implying that it wasn't.

- Other semi-recent updates include Buck Showalter being extended through 2018 in Baltimore, Ron Gardenhire getting a two-year extension from the Twins, and Ryne Sandberg having the interim tag removed in Philly

Re: 2013-14 Manager Shuffle

Davey really seemed to have lost his edge. Probably a healthier human being, but a less competitive manager. That, along with Jeffrey Maier, might have cost him the Hall of Fame.

It seems to me the Dave we knew from the Mets, if he gave in on that plan to limit Strasburg's innings last year, would have had the foresight to shut him down earlier and bring him back with a week and a half to go in the season, and have him available for the playoffs.

Reports this morning quote Jon Daniels has said there is "not a question" of bringing Ron Washington back. You'd figure he'd let Wash dangle a bit. A lot of folks questioning how he came to the decision to use Nelson Cruz at DH in the play-in game, appearing in his first game after serving his 50-game suspension.

Re: 2013-14 Manager Shuffle

I didn't see anyone question using Cruz; I think you had to use him. His career numbers against Price were excellent, and the rest of that lineup doesn't exactly scare you.

Re: 2013-14 Manager Shuffle

The Cruz question comes up as a contrast to the Giants choosing NOT to re-employ Melky Cabrera when his suspension ran out.
The Giants, of course, won the WS without him.

The Indians started using Jhonny Peralta about a week ago (although not usually at SS) and presumably will do so in however long their playoff run lasts.

Re: 2013-14 Manager Shuffle

New (non-recycled) names likely to be mentioned for vacant jobs:
- Matt Williams -- currently coaching in Arizona
- Brad Ausmus -- former catcher, mostly w/Houston. Dartmouth boy.
- Jason Giambi -- Yes, really. Colorado interviewed him before hiring Walt Weiss a year ago and his current manager Terry Francona can't stop saying enough good things about him. Won't necessarily be this winter, but some time in the future is looking increasingly likely.
- Randy Knorr -- Bench coach and the likely choice for the Nats if they decide to stay in house.

That was the Tigers. And not only did they play him, they played him in left field, a position he'd never played before even in the minors until I guess a week or two ago.

Yeah, I meant Tigers.
I sometimes conflate Jhonny Peralta with Asdrubal Cabrera and I swap their team assignments.

Well I don't think Girardi himself has said anything even as speculation around Girardi and a potential (and now more than that) Cubs opening has been swirling among the chattering class for months now.

But the Chicago area is his home turf and, if one believes that Theo does have the golden touch and/or that the law of averages has got to shine on Chicago's north side at some point, Girardi has to know that the manager that gets them there has a guaranteed statue next to Harry Carey the very next week.
Besides, who's to say that he doesn't see the Yanx as a sinking ship right now being run by a couple of silver spoon dunces who not only don't have their father's flair but also don't operate in an era where they can simply spend away their weaknesses.

Reds have made the playoffs three out of the last four seasons but have never advanced.
Dusty got a two-year extension following last year's debacle when the Reds blew a 2-0 in games lead to SF.
You wonder how much this season's WC loss to Pitt played into things. It's one thing to stick too long with a pitcher. Hurdle did so yesterday with Burnett but at least that's just one game in a series. Dusty sitting back while Cueto was melting down in a one-and-done situation is another story.

Reports out of Chicago say that the Nats are looking to talk to Girardi, just one day after his discussions with the Yanx.

What are the MFYs thinking? Cashman made some remark to the effect of, "We'll make sure we give Joe some $$" but he didn't sound all that enthused, and Joe doesn't seem all that jazzed about staying, at least not as excited as Washington appears to be about hiring him.

So where do the MFYs go? Do they try and get Mattingly from LA?

They are hard to figure out all of a sudden.

Re: 2013-14 Manager Shuffle

Cincy limped home this season, losing the last five, before falling to the Pirates on the road in the play-in game.

My guess is that when they signed Votto to his big contract, they expected to pay for it with playoff money, and they haven't gotten quite as much as they bargained for. Familiar story. Was for Omar Minaya, anyhow.

Maybe they'll make a run at Charlie Manuel.

But look at his managerial record. Or maybe I should before I tell you to. I mean, he's a good manager. They are gonna pay him anyway. They must really dislike him.

Re: 2013-14 Manager Shuffle

He's certainly helmed successful teams. But whether that makes him a good manager is debatable.

One pennant and no championships in 20 seasons --- that's the column folks tend to look at after a few years (or six) with the guy.

Re: 2013-14 Manager Shuffle

An article about Dusty in one of the NY rags today. Yep, Dusty butted heads with managment. Funny thing is it looks like the last two things they were at odds about were smart moves by Dusty. Chapman being a closer (Dusty wanted that, they didn't-Chap had a perfect year)and Dusty wanted speed demon Hamilton up on the team and they didn't. Hamilton played a big part in a few stretch wins.

From just last week:
October 2, 2013 6:00 pm
Dusty Baker expected to return to Reds in 2014
by Jack Moore

Reds manager Dusty Baker is expected to remain with the squad next season, the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Baker is signed through 2014. General manager Walt Jocketty said he didn't think Baker's status was in question, so unless owner Bob Castellini gets the itch, don't expect Baker to go anywhere anytime soon.

Castellini got the itch alright.

Something must have gone down in the interim.

Baker managed the Reds to the playoffs three times, including division championships in 2010 and 2012 to go with the 2013 Wild Card. He finished at 509-463 (.524) with the Reds and 0-3 in postseason series.

Or maybe the postseason business. But come on, somethings going on here that don't meet the eye. Not that I care.

Interesting line from the article

Rare has someone been criticized so much for guiding an imperfect team to a 90-win season, but Baker became a target. He was a target of some fans, of many sabremetricians. And ultimately, he was a target of Jocketty.

of many sabermetricians , not sure if I have ever seen that mentioned before in an article like that, who are these sabremetricians?

So, according to this chart --

[u:3t219tuc]Those not coming back (with job still open):[/u:3t219tuc]
Davey Johnson, Nats - retiring
Dusty Baker, Reds - should retire
Dale Sveum, Cubs - coaching job
Eric Wedge, Sea - ditto

[u:3t219tuc]Signed only thru this season (with no new deal or options for next season):[/u:3t219tuc]
Jim Leyland, Tigers - he'll be back if he wants to be
Walt Weiss, Rockies - organization guy will get more than 1 year
Ned Yost, KC - they may not extend him
Bo Porter, Astros - what difference does it make?

[u:3t219tuc]Team options for 2014 (not yet exercised):[/u:3t219tuc]
Fredi Gonzalez, Braves - will be exercised after post-season
Mike Metheny, Cards - ditto
Don Mattingly, LA - ditto
Bud Black, SD - i think they still like him but he's been there a long while now

So that looks like 4-7 jobs open for next season.

Matt Williams, currently on the DBacks staff, seems to be getting the most buzz. Could interview and/or fit anywhere I suppose but probably won't take a "bad" job (Houston, Seattle) on the theory that he'll get a good one eventually even if he has to wait a year.

Jayson Werth was recently quoted as wanting Cal Ripken to manage the Nats. Not that anyone asked him but it threw the idea out there and now Cal himself isn't batting the idea down. Sure he hasn't managed or even coached anywhere before but he's Cal Fucking Ripken.
Is he feuding with Orioles owner Angelos? (is anyone NOT feuding with him?)
Will the Nats hire him just to stick it to Angelos?
Will GM Mike Rizzo be willing to share the headlines with such a strong local presence as Ripken?

Had that David Cone thing going --- tough dude with a boyish all-American face. I also associate him with those big letters on the back of the Reds uniforms.

Always good to see pitchers get the big chair.

Agreed about the Reds talent, and it's not like the Tigers, where their big bats force them to trade off defense. Votto and Bruce are defensive assets. A lot of meh seasons this year from the supporting cast though. Mesaraco, Frazier, Cozart, and Phillips (despite 100 RBI) took turns slumping all year. That's talent!

I was employing exaggeration. He's firmly in the middle exactly in the NL, though 3 of them have managed the same amount of regular season games and Mattingly took over with two weeks to go.

and 7 AL managers, meaning he's 15 of 30.

Re: 2013-14 Manager Shuffle

Dodger brass is making things tough on Mattingly by apparently axing several coaches and assistants who were considered to be "his guys". And in a press conference yesterday Mattingly made it clear that he was happy with the way things were run this year.

Sounds like each side is playing a game of chicken.
- Will the Dodgers, now that they've swatted him down a peg or two, offer him an extension?
- or do they pick up his option and keep him in more of a lame duck status than he was this past year despite the improving record each year he's been there?
- and will Mattingly decide to leave without a sign of more backing from upstairs - especially now several other jobs are open?

I had totally missed the fact that he's been there three seasons already. One or two sounded right to me.

Looked it up. Kerrigan replaced Jimy Williams in 2001 and managed the last 43 games. He was replaced by Grady Little after the season.

All ESPN is doing there is agreeing with what they and everyone else read via FOX--which was the source of the story in the first place. But just because ESPN has a habit of taking credit for everything whether they had anything to do with it or not, the act of them "confirming" (read: repeating) someone else's news doesn't make it any more official than it was yesterday.
The only point about treating this as not yet official is that the club hasn't announced anything due to the moratorium on outside news during the World Series. I don't think anyone doubts that this is true and that a press conference with terms and details will come sometime next week.

Re: 2013-14 Manager Shuffle

Those not coming back (with job still open):
Jim Leyland, Tigers - retiring
Dale Sveum, Cubs - fired
Eric Wedge, Sea - fired

Signed only thru this season (with no new deal or options for next season):
Ned Yost, KC - got 2-year extension
Walt Weiss, Rockies - Organization guy will likely get more than 1 year
Bo Porter, Astros - What difference does it make? But probably stays

Team options for 2014 (not yet exercised):
Fredi Gonzalez, Braves - will likely be exercised after post-season
Mike Metheny, Cards - ditto
Bud Black, SD - i think they still like him but he's been there a long while now
Don Mattingly, LA - They fired his coaches and keep insisting on 1-year deals; i guess they're trying to force him out.

Already hired:
Reds - Bryan Price (hired)
Nationals - Matt Williams (not confirmed)

So that looks like 3-6 jobs open for next season. Your remaining candidates for the following?

(option not yet picked up):
Astros - no word yet
Padres - no word yet
Dodgers - ?

OPEN spots (with rumored candidates so far):
Detroit - Lloyd McClendon, Tom Brookens, Tim Wallach, Mel Rojas, Dusty Baker, Manny Acta, Tory Lovullo, Brad Ausmus
Cubs -Rick Renteria, AJ Hinch, Eric Wedge, Dave Martinez, Lovullo
Mariners - Chip Hale, McClendon, Lovullo

ALSO mentioned: Joe McEwing, Joey Cora

Are MLB managers' multi-year contracts guaranteed? Maybe some? Why would a manager sign a multi-year contract if the money's not guaranteed and, for sure, the job isn't?

Vic Sage
Oct 28 2013 12:53 PM
Re: 2013-14 Manager Shuffle

my understanding is that the contracts are guaranteed like any others in baseball (and everywhere else except football), but not any of the option years. That's why they're called "options". So if the manager get fired on a long-term deal, the team still pays him.

but i think they have non-compete clauses, too, so if they're fired and being paid by one team, they can't go manage another team in that league. That's why some go into broadcasting until their deals expire.

I could see the reason why a manager would sign a multi-year contract if the money's guaranteed. Not so if the money isn't guaranteed. Unless there's some signing bonus attached. Not that a bonus would make any sense in MLB where there's no salary cap to circumvent. I know that option's aren't guaranteed - that's why they're optional.

I was thinking about this after all the new hires because I remembered when Davey Johnson & Jack McKeon were hired as interim managers (Davey later hired permanently) during a fairly short span back in 2011 - and some snarky voice on ESPN used the age of those two as a jumping off point to trash baseball for living in the past yadda, yadda, same-old-shit, etc. He even hit upon what I'm sure he thought was a catchy phrase of "baseball's old, football's bold" cuz lord knows that the always cutting-edge NFL would never hire a retread or engage in copy-cat strategy.

Anyway, of the recent hires, only Lloyd McClendon has managed previously and now 19 of the 30 are or will be working with their first team in 2014. Or, if you want to point out that John Gibbons is on his second go-around with the Jays and say that really 18 of 30 are first-timers, that's OK too.
Either way, I'm sure the guy has recanted his rant ... yeah right.

But it does surface today wight eh news that the Astros have fired Bo Porter as manager alone with bench coach Dave Trembley. Timing seems a bit odd, but I'm sure there are reasons not obvious to distant observers.

Organization man Tom Lawless gets to lay down the law (wait, can a guy named Lawless even do that?) for the rest of the season.

Porter and his GM had been butting heads and complaining about each other to the pres. Porter also raised some eyebrows when he called his team into the tunnel between innings last week to have an in-game team meeting.

Pretty sure Lawless was a Spring Training Met, or something.

Was clearly and consistently the worst hitter in the league with the mid-80s with the Cards, but Whitey liked his defensive-replacement skillz or his savoir faire or something, because he carried Lawless for the better part of four years. The guy absolutely killed it in 1987, going .080 / .179 / .120 // .299 with two hits, one double, and no RBI in 29 plate appearances, and then somehow made the post-season roster and then hit a game-winning homer in the World Series against Minnesota. Incredible.

Also the only player ever traded for Pete Rose.

Very anonymous first-time manager on a team both at a low point in its history (3 consecutive 105+ loss seasons) and during the first span in history where they don't play the Mets (we actually get that division this year but theirs in the final series of the year). Also was pretty anonymous during his playing career (brief stints with 3 different AL clubs) to the point where I think most NYM fans would have trouble picking him out of a one-man lineup.

This is really only notable in it being the lone managerial firing of the year.

I have to be honest here... after making my post about not knowing who the manager of the Houston Astros was, I realized that I couldn't name the managers of the Marlins or the Nationals either. I just looked it up; the name "Mike Redmond" didn't even ring a bell, and I had no idea that Matt Williams was managing the Nationals.
