Vitamin Water

How big a scam is this? On a scale of one (Omar Epps replacing Wesley Snipes in Major League II) to ten (Bernard Madoff's ponzi scheme), where would you rank it? How better or worse for me is this, compared to, say, Snapple, or a can of Coke?

How bogus is the label designed to make a soft drink look like a pharmaceutical?

sure, but the labels are funny too.

I don't think it's a scam at all, though probably over-stated...3? It's probably on-par with, but better than, most Snapples and Gatorade, certainly better than soda, but not as good as say 100% fruit juice snapple or a glass of pomegranate-cranberry juice..

I don't drink much flavored non-alcoholic stuff, but I trend towards Sobe Lifewater when I want something extra/vitamins.

Re: Vitamin Water

Gfafif can probably give you more context on this but one of that company's founders or top marketers (a loudmouth, well-dressed, oily Brit) was in the office one time shoveling more bullshit around than I've probably ever seen any product whore attempt at any trade show. (for example, a player on the sideline at the SuperBowl was apparently spotted with a bottle of this stuff became "WE DOMINATED THE SUPERBOWL!!")

Back then iirc he'd recently snagged David Wright as an investor. When the whole shebang was sold to Coke years later they all became really rich bullshit artists.

Re: Vitamin Water

Hydration is important to athletes - it's not a scam, but it may be overstated.

I stay away from the drinks with calories, but have been known to drink flavored waters and similar beverages during and after runs. Some people just don't like plain water, so if a runner/biker/etc. likes the flavor and drinks a bit more because of that, that's not a bad thing.

Re: Vitamin Water

I am addicted to Snapple Iced Tea. Orange Gatorade and the Orange Vitamin water are a close second.

However - I mostly drink all three of those only after I've gone for a run or a during a bike ride and I always cut them by half with water. I find that the sweetness really satisfies my thirst much more than just water.

Once in a while I think this crap will help if I have a headache. But in general, the entire single-serve beverage industry is just so awful in every way.

Re: Vitamin Water

And I'll tell youse something else about these sugary drinks/soda....

My wife and I never really prohibited our kids from sodas and whatnot when they were younger. The only thing we were wary of, rightly or wrongly, was the caffeine. As a result, they'd have a Sprite or 7up or whatever when we'd eat out.

Now that the kids are almost 13, 15 & 17, their drink of choice whether we are out or eating in is water. They rarely drink the sugary stuff. The flipside is that the kids whose parents forbade the soda now suck that crap down like....um...water.

We didn't plan it that way but I'm glad thats how it turned out.

Hey, I'm one of those kids! We rarely had soda in the house when I was a kid. Now I'm a huge soda drinker. I definitely drink more cola than anything else.

I remember that Super Bowl: Bucs 48 Raiders 21 VitaminWater AWESOME!

Original company co-founded in Whitestone by a Mets fan, but despite Wright's later involvement, you never saw it dominating Shea Stadium or Citi Field given the beverage relationship the team has long enjoyed with VitaminWater's current owner's chief competitor.

Wasn't there a lot of denial that Wright made a mint out of the deal?, IIRC Rubin was his mouthpiece and $20 million was a figure quoted.

Re: Vitamin Water

I've never tried Vitamin Water. If I felt the need, I'd put some
sugar in a glass of tap water and wash down a non-brand-name
multivitamin with it. The crap that this country gets suckered into
buying is mind boggling.

Re: Vitamin Water

It's got a little less sugar in it than cola and the like. Like, a little. (33g to 44g.)

Used to do Diet Coke and various sugarfree Red Bull cousins 3-4 times a week. Not so much anymore, including this shtuff.

Re: Vitamin Water

Meh. More towards the sports-replenishment lines, those with little to no calories preferably (G2, Powerade Zero). Generally consumed post-exercise and not much else of the time.

Re: Vitamin Water

Yeah, I had been deep in the throes of a Coke-a-day habit that has not flattered me. Water is fine, but I like a little bubble in my H20. We have a soda stream at home so I can make my own sparkling water, but I negected to pack it.

Going to the machine, I stared at the Coke. "Coke," I said, "I forsake thee!" But Dasani has no appeal for me. Makes me want to beat myself up. From the top of the machine, the V-Water called my name.

Me and David Wright are old buddies, and I want in most every way to be like him. So before I knew what I was doing, my fingers punched A1.

Two mouthfuls, and I'm realizing I'm getting a sugar kick not that that far off that of a Nantucket Nectar. If I'm going to be pounding that much sugar, at least, I thought, give me the anesthetizing oral chemical reaction of a damn mouthful o' Coke.

But whichever button I push on that machine, I guess I'm bowing before the same evil priest.

Sparkling water tomorrow.

Re: Vitamin Water

I generally drink half a bottle of the zero calorie Sobe Lifewater when lifting and running. I finish the remaining half of the bottle following my work out. It's flavored water with some vitamins and nutrients without any calories. I find it a good work out drink. I very rarely drink the stuff otherwise.

Re: Vitamin Water

i drink a lot of gatorade G2, pre- and post-run. i try not to drink it so much when i'm not running. i also try to avoid soda, but often enough i fail at the effort.

i don't bother with lifewater, and most other sugar-waters, be they pretend-healthy or not.

I prefer the Wegman's version of that. It doesn't have the aftertaste that I find in G2 -

Re: Vitamin Water

I really don't like the sugar-replacements most of those use (or diet sodas). I don't care for most fruity drinks overall, besides lemonade, so I usually go with the Sobe Lifewater Agave Lemonade. I initially gravitated to it for an attempt at extra vitamins/etc after a workout to see if it'd help with the nasty headaches working out/running often gives me. I've also tried it for times I'm feeling a little hungover, but I haven't notice any effect there, and limited effect after workouts anyway.

The marketing is clearly hype and pseudoscience bs (well, what isn't?) but it's got vitamins and only 100 calories for 20oz so it'll do in a pinch.
