Grave Robbers? I need to vent ...

I am so freakin' upset I don't know whether to cry, scream or
just let my head explode. I am not a cemetery-visiting type. Our
departed loved ones are in our hearts and going to visit a lawn
marker just isn't my thing. I went to my Mom's grave today (she
passed away 20 years ago this summer) for the the first time in
years and her freakin' tombstone is gone. I'm like what the frig?
The office was closed. I found the deed when I came home and
will have to go during the week but I am just beside myself. How
does a freaking tombstone disappear? Who the frig would want
it or move it? KB is gonna have to take off and go with me. I'm
afraid to go alone and get set off by the wrong answers. You'll
be reading about me in the papers!

That is indeed horrible Kase - and ridiculously senseless to boot.

I'm so sorry.

Egads! I'm sorry that's happened to you. There were some brass statuary stolen from our local cemetery a few years ago by people selling brass for scrap, but I can't imagine what anyone would want with stone.

Very sorry. This is lousy.

Was their damage to any of the sites around hers?

Re: Grave Robbers? I need to vent ...

Thanks guys ... I was freakin' when I posted that. I needed
to type and did it here and sent out some emails. Didn't want
to fb it.
It's a beautiful well-kept cemetery and it's not like it's an instance
of vandalism or anything. She just gone. It makes no sense, and
I have two more plots next to hers so there should be some room
up there too. Makes no sense at all.
We're gonna go look again tomorrow, make sure we're not mistaken
or something and missing something. But jeezaloo, I think I know
where I buried my freakin' Mom!

Awful, I hope they didn't resell the plot, I have heard of that happening. IIRC there was a scandal at a NYC cemetery a few years back about that going on.

I really hope it's my fault and I'm in the wrong and confused.
If I find it's something whacky or illegal I'm gonna lose it.

Re: Grave Robbers? I need to vent ...

There were some wacko stories from Arlington National of all places a couple of years back about bodies that weren't where they were supposed to be and not in underneath the stones that bore the names. I'm not usually the grave-visiting type either although I did tour the place a few years back and I assume my uncle is still underneath his stone, nor have I heard from my cousins that they suspect otherwise.

I can't believe a legit cemetery would simply remove graves and/or plow them under for re-selling purposes. They actually DO do that in parts of Europe where land is much less available* but I wouldn't think a place over here could possibly think they'd get away with something like that here because there's almost no chance of not getting caught.
I suspect this is either a simple mistake (maybe yours, maybe someone else's) or someone is vandalizing or swiping stones and that the body has not been moved at all.

* a grave is considered a twenty-year or so deal in some places. They'll return any headstone you paid for after that but the specific plot is then re-used. I guy I knew was telling me that about his parents buried in their native Germany.

Re: Grave Robbers? I need to vent ...

Last month I was on Long Island and visited the graves of my grandparents. Their headstones were okay, but I noticed others that were sinking into the ground. Some were almost three-quarters gone. I imagine that in years to come, those stones will be completely underground and the ground above them will seal up and grow grass again. I wouldn't guess that that's what happened here, but I suppose it's a possibility.

Thanks to all for the kind support. Kasper solved the mystery, we
were looking under the wrong tree (which must have got hit by lightning
or a really strong wind) ...

Re: Grave Robbers? I need to vent ...

Perhaps the tree was a Super Storm Sandy victim. We lost a lot of trees down here that week.

Re: Grave Robbers? I need to vent ...

I haven't been there in a while. Sandy wasn't a big thing here.
We had a weird ice/snow pre-Halloween thing here a couple of
years ago. I suppose I could inquire, just glad things are intact
but kinda sad her shade tree is gone.
