THE SCHAEFER METS PLAYERS OF THE YEAR, 2013

PLAYER OF THE YEAR
The Schaefer Mets Player of the Year for 2013 is first-time winner DANIEL MURPHY. Murphy, the only Mets position player to remain on the active roster the entire season, led the Mets in 2013 in multiple categories: Games (161), at bats (658), runs (92), hits (188), doubles (38), runs batted in (78), and total bases (273).

PITCHER OF THE YEAR
The Schaefer Mets Pitcher of the Year is also a first-time winner, the much-celebrated MATT HARVEY. Harvey was so far ahead of the other Mets pitchers that, even though his season ended in late August, he still earned almost 14 more Schaefer points than runner-up Dillon Gee. Harvey was 9-5 in 26 starts and 178.1 innings. He led the club in strikeouts with 191 and his 2.27 Earned Run Average was also the team's best. When asked to comment on his Schaefer Mets Pitcher of the Year award, Harvey said, "Qualcomm ideas power the mobile devices, networks, and services that connect us to what matters to us most."

RELIEF PITCHER OF THE YEAR
The Mets Relief Pitcher of the Year is yet another first-time winner, LATROY HAWKINS. Last year's winner, Bobby Parnell, had built a solid lead in the competition, but his season ended abruptly on July 30, opening the door for Hawkins to take over his closer role and, in the final weeks of the season, his Schaefer lead as well. LaTroy, a 40-year-old journeyman pitcher, had a 2.93 ERA in 72 games, and saved 13 games, all in August and September. He is the oldest player to win an annual Schaefer award since 41-year-old Tom Glavine was Pitcher of the Year in 2007.

BENCH PLAYER OF THE YEAR
The Bench Player of the Year is a repeat of last year's champ, the volatile JORDANY VALDESPIN, whose Mets season ended on July 13, but he built an early-season lead (accented by and aggressive pie-in-the-face attack at the hands of John Buck) the proved to be insurmountable. Jordany earned 8.70 of his total 18.09 points in games in which he was not in the starting lineup. Runner-up Andrew Brown scored 7.88 points as a reserve player, but his bench days virtually came to and end in September after the departure of Marlon Byrd opened up an outfield spot.

Re: SCHAEFER METS PLAYERS OF THE YEAR, 2013

Well deserved for Murph, Matt & Hawk. JV1...not a lot of competition on that bench, eh? If this team is going to compete, it really needs more good players. (Some scouting report that is.)

Beautiful cardwork by Grimm. Still in awe of the Boyhood bit. Thank you for your diligent spreadsheeting. I enjoy the voting still.

Not a single fraction of a point for Collin McHugh, who deserves at least an asterisk for bringing over an imminent SB champ.

Re: SCHAEFER METS PLAYERS OF THE YEAR, 2013

i'd love to see a schaefer graph, showing the growing schaefer totals for all players as the season progressed. but you already do more than enough fine work, so i'm hardly demanding anything here.

Re: SCHAEFER METS PLAYERS OF THE YEAR, 2013

Who'd've guessed two years ago that Daniel Murphy would embody the word "durable"? His 188 hits leave him just outside of the top-ten hitliest Met seasons ever.

1) Lance Johnson, 1996: 227
2) José Reyes, 2008: 204
3) John Olerud, 1998: 197
4) David Wright, 2007: 196
5) José Reyes, 2006: 194
T6) José Reyes, 2007: 191
T6) Edgardo Alfonzo, 1999: 191
T6) Felix Millan, 1975: 191
9) José Reyes, 2005: 190
10) David Wright, 2008: 189

11) Daniel Murphy, 2013: 188

He's like young José Reyes, shaking off the "injury prone" label in earnest.

I remember Lee Mazzilli threatening Felix Millan's team record in 1979, but didn't make it because he walked too much. That season is now tied 15th all time, as all of the team's top hit seasons are 1996 and after, save for Millan.

Re: SCHAEFER METS PLAYERS OF THE YEAR, 2013

Terrific job all around. I'm sorry to have gone on a Schaefer Strike for the second straight August, but that's just how it goes sometimes. Ready to drink down a new season next year.

Congrats to Muffy and Douchy -- the voters got it right. And thanks also for the great cards and tallying and participation.

Re: SCHAEFER METS PLAYERS OF THE YEAR, 2013

Thanks everybody, and you're welcome. I feel a little sheepish taking credit for "hard work" since this Schaefer stuff only takes a few minutes per day, but I guess the minutes do add up.

My favorite part of this is the final payoff, when we see that array of baseball cards that opened this thread. Strange to not see David Wright at all, but I looked back and he didn't appear at all in 2011 either. As always, I tried to make sure that each of the years from the 1970s was (almost) equally represented. The cards are as fun for me as they are for you guys. The ones this year that most evoked the smell of bubble gum for me were the 1972 Murphy and Rice cards, and the 1977 Byrd.

And who would've guessed that Juan Lagares would get more points than Ike Davis and Lucas Duda?

Re: SCHAEFER METS PLAYERS OF THE YEAR, 2013

The funny thing is that, injuries aside, Wright had a perfectly good year. May not have dominated any one month, but he put up his best OPS+ ever.

Re: SCHAEFER METS PLAYERS OF THE YEAR, 2013

injuries aside, david had a great year. an outstanding one.

fangraphs has him at 6.0 WAR in 112 games. only 5 NL position players had a better WAR.

prorate that out to the same 157 games that NL WAR leader andrew mccutchen has, and he'd project to 8.4 WAR, to mccutchen's 8.2 WAR. only mike trout (10.4 WAR) and hanley ramirez (5 WAR in 86 games, prorated 9.1 WAR) had more productive years, per fangraphs.

bbref has him at 5.9 WAR, behind 7 other NL position players, projecting out to 8.3 WAR, bettered by only mike trout (9.2 WAR), carlos gomez (8.4 WAR in 147 games, prorated to 8.9 WAR) and hanley ramirez again (5.4 WAR in 86 games, prorated to 9.9 WAR) on a /157 game basis.

on a /157 game basis, this season is effectively tied with 2007 as the best of david's career, using either websites WAR formulation.

an argument could be made that he wuz robbed by the schaefer voters.

or, more correctly, that the schaefer voting process masks consistency in favor of streakiness and hotness (to include anthony recker). one of the two. as of the time of my inactivity (and david's injury), i had wright and murphy effectively tied in schaeffer metrics (positive game-by-game production) though david had a lesser amount of negative game-by-game production, which schaefer does not, cannot, and [u:14tyhcsn]should not[/u:14tyhcsn] account for.

Re: SCHAEFER METS PLAYERS OF THE YEAR, 2013

Also, the Schaefer voting is a little hard on stuff like walks, and also weights splashy defensive plays more than consistently good-to-great defense.

Great stuff, you old Thing.

Re: SCHAEFER METS PLAYERS OF THE YEAR, 2013

FWIW, Murph's Schaefer pointage per game played was .666, David's was .674, Byrd's was .692.

Harvey's was 3.21, including for his PH appearance, though with pitchers it's a different ballgame (which I guess is a pun).

i think you could also look at sip rate, or percentage of games played in which a player recieved schaefer votes.

I actually did that one year for my own voting. The king of the gulp, as it were, was Pedro Martinez: 5 starts, points in all five. That was 2007, when he didn't pitch until Sigh-ptember.

Rate-wise, Wright's 2013 was about as good as any season he's ever had.

Re: SCHAEFER METS PLAYERS OF THE YEAR, 2013

So, is it
(a) graces Terry exhibited, it was perfectly shortsighted and even dumb to keep Wright running out there when everybody in the park knew his hammy was barking.

or

(b) Terry knew his team was hanging onto the last vesrtiges of hope, so he had to run Wright out there, because saving him for tomorrow was not going to help the team if they didn't win today.

??

Whatever the answer, Wright sure kicked in the face the notion of first-year-after-signing-a-big-deal syndrome, even if the bigger money doesn't kick in until this year.
