The Fearsome Mets-vs.-Fish Rivalry

You may have missed it, because getting cockpunched with a loss with little at stake isn't as ennobling as dying hard with a championship on the line, but the Mets and the Marlins had by far the most dramatic rivalry of the 2013 season. Feeding into that were two of the most miserable losses for the Mets --- the June 8, 20-inning disaster in which the Mets had the winning run on base for about half the day but could never get him home; and the April 29, 15-inning game in which they lost the lead in the last inning twice. The Mets punched a cock or two also, but alas, the record is what it is.

Great article.....I'd have never thought of the rivalry like that but they present it very well. Makes sense when you think about it, the Mets V Marlins games were great, and according to the system used Met/Phillies was the worst rivalry....makes sense too, games had no spice to them whereas the Marlins games did for whatever reason.

The Mets were more evenly matched with the Phils, but for whatever reason (injuries? relief pitching?), they consistently played down to the Marlins and/or the Marlins consistently played up. Interestingly, they really kept Stanton in check, holding him to a .156 / .264 / .333 // .597 line over the season. Some guy I crossed up with on Facebook said he didn't know what the big deal was with Stanton... based on what he had seen.
