METS HIRE WILL CARAFELLO AS DIRECTOR, SOCIAL MEDIA

FLUSHING, N.Y., October 21, 2013 – The New York Mets today named Will Carafello to the newly created position of Director, Social Media. Carafello will be responsible for working collaboratively across the organization to oversee the Mets social media efforts. He will report to David Newman, Senior Vice President, Marketing & Communications.

Prior to joining the Mets, Carafello was Director of Marketing for the New Jersey Devils. While there, Carafello was instrumental in the creation of “Mission Control,” the first digital command center within the sports and entertainment industry. He successfully guided the growth of the team’s social media engagement, an achievement realized via the Devils #1 Klout score in the NHL.

Carafello has spent over a decade in the sports and entertainment industry in marketing roles across venues, arenas and professional sports teams. Carafello was an integral part of the pioneering team that opened the Prudential Center in 2007. He has also garnered experience from roles within the Meadowlands Sports Complex (Continental Airlines Arena and Giants Stadium), and Madison Square Garden. Carafello was previously the Marketing Director for the Harlem Globetrotters.

Carafello is a graduate of Seton Hall University in South Orange, N.J. Carafello and his wife Kelly recently welcomed a newborn daughter, Annaclaire. The family, including dog Homer, resides in Clifton, N.J.

Fired when he replaced "Sweet Georgia Brown" with "Gangsta's Paradise" as team shoot-around song.

MEMO

FROM: Will Carafello, Dir. Social Media
TO: All Concerned
RE: Whistling Night & Other Promotions

My early research indicates our potential customer base shows an outsize interest in the craft/art form of whistling. Should institute whistling contests & concerts ASAP to take advantage! Suggestions:

• "Sanford & Son Theme Night" -- Will SA be signing more junk?
• "Bark in the Park Day" -- Do we already do this? Include dog-whistles, but not the kind only dogs can hear.
• "Referee Thursdays" -- Hand out whistles to all fans who Tweet they'll be showing up in striped shirts. When umpire makes bad call, have "refs in stands" overrule them with a shrill blast.

Jay -- can one of the coaches blow a whistle in Justin Turner's ear the instant he picks up a pie?

What we need is a self-referencing song that encompasses whistling and references to other musicians.

Let me state for the record that I'm openly jealous of this gig and wish I had known it was an opening that I could have applied for.

Me too. I can make pictures and stuff and I'm good with real people and internet people. Right?

Right?

Wonder if this guy is to be Horwitz' successor. They must be thinking of a transition at some point down the line.

How about a Director of Not F#cking Things Up? That's a job that's been empty for a long time.

Is Director, Social Media the same thing as Spin Doctor?
I guess it depends on if he is doing his thing before or after something happens. Let's wait and see.

Social media is definitely a job for the pro-active, not the re-active.

nah, completely unrelated. I suspect what he's going to be doing is a directing things like in-game tweet contests and that sorta thing. They started doing a lot of that but a lot of it has been run by interns of either the Mets or MLB headquarters and well, you know how interns fuck things up (#VoteMarkakis).

The only Horwitz connection is that all the reporters love his tweets so he gets mentioned with this news.

Funny that no one leaked this, since he tweeted he got the job three days ago.

Well someone's going to have to succeed Jay; he's 68 or 69 years old and been doing the job for 30+ years.

The other connection is both guys are from Clifton, NJ.

Nice place. I used to shop there a lot when I worked in the next town over but never ran into Jay. Did look at 5-10 houses there though.

I suspect Jay will leave the same way Ralph Kiner will.
