Not working.
I think Columbus Day is the most bogus holiday of them all.

Agree. And I'm half-Italian.

Always working. Big visit day for us on campus because high schools are closed. Plus I get to listen to all of our students bitch on Twitter all day about the fact that they're in class.

It's not an Italian thing ... the Vikings 'discovered' America.
Oh, wait ... no there were natives here too.

Columbus Day = Bogus

I totally agree. I'm saying that as a New Yorker of Italian descent, this is supposed to be a big deal to me and it ain't, for all the reasons you mentioned.

The kids and I are off. The wife is working. I'm going to drag these youngins all over town all morning and wear them out so I can nap after lunch. It's a devious plan.

I work for a company that has recently merged with another company. We have traditionally not gotten Columbus Day off but since the other company did we get it this year only.

But particularly in the northeast here, it IS considered an Italian thing which gives it a built-in advocacy group to ensure that it'll never get the 'Pluto' treatment and be demoted from its status as a holiday.

Of course not only did ol' Chris sail for Spain and not Italy but Columbus wouldn't even have considered himself 'Italian'; he would have referred to himself as Genovese since what we know today as 'Italy' was really just a bunch of independent (and often antagonistic) city-states connected by an only somewhat related language. And then there's that whole thing about never actually setting foot on mainland North America.

C.C. = great explorer, top-notch ship captain, really lousy administrator, and someone totally worth knowing and admiring as an historical figure.
Worthy of a U.S. major holiday? ... ehh, not so much.

Re: >/>/>/-+Off-day check, 10/14+-\<\<\<

I think Columbus was part of something that had a big impact on leading to America as it is today, in terms of colonization and all that. And learning about that era and how America came to be (and including smallpox and the Vikings..) is important and even worth celebrating/remembering but it shouldn't be for Columbus because he was a bastard.

Anyway, not off. My current company does not believe in these "holiday" things apparently. Although neither does the client/MTA. My future company? I think they have off.

Columbus is NOT on the same par holiday-wise as Lincoln seeing as how Lincoln's birthday never was a federal holiday.

btw, the whole "sex-slaver" and "mass murderer" things are a bit over the top

Working. I haven't had Columbus day off since 1970. It's just a holiday in public schools and for government employees.

Did the Native Americans discover America?

I guess Thanksgiving kinda covers that.

They were here long before any discoverers.
No parade for them today!

Re: >/>/>/-+Off-day check, 10/14+-\<\<\<

Have the day off and am proudly displaying my inflatable Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria on the lawn. It's always a neighborhood thrill when I let the air out of the Santa Maria and "sink" it in the early evening.

The Knights of Columbus thing (and let us all celebrate how that graphic spits out "male-only" and "Catholic") is overstated. They certainly lobbied, but the officialness of the holiday had come about rather organically, observed since at least the mid-19th century, and lobbied for by many entities until given recognition in various states until consensus hits a tipping point.

Consensus is moving in a different direction, and since it's among the least observed holidays, and the sacred status of his civic contributions is clearly dubious, I have no problem with it's elimination, but since it's near impossible to knock a holiday off the calendar, and it has a natural lobby group, getting past them as well as organized labor is going to be a tough haul.

And I happen to BE from Bumretch, Nebrahoma!

It is kind of nice having a holiday in the middle of October. All due respects to Martin Luther King but I wish he wasn't born in mid-January.

I agree, mid-October is the perfect time for a long weekend. No love for Columbus, but definitely a good time for a break.
