Self-Referential Bands (split from Vote for Enshrinement)

Love that song. It cleverly walks the line between total cheese and complete rockin-out. Plus, what other band except the Monkees and Talk Talk had a theme song featuring their band name? It's like Eddie Van Halen performing while wearing a Van Halen t-shirt or something.

Wilco (the Song)
Jocko Homo (certainly Devo's theme song but without the band name in the title of the song)

Other, not necessarily theme songs,

In a Big Country
Tubes World Tour

Re: Vote for Enshrinement

"What's Your Favorite Color? (Theme Song)" --- Living Color

"Never Mind" --- Red Hot Chili Pepers

"Mystery Achievement" ("You know me --- I like pretending") --- Pretenders

There's others, and rap acts have a long history of self-referential lyrics.

We're slipping!

"R.A.M.O.N.E.S."

Now, I know they didn't write it, but they performed it, and it's on their farewell live CD.

Re: Self-Referential Bands (split from Vote for Enshrinement

"Never Mind" by the Red Hots not only is a self-referential "theme" song, but it also references one of this years nominees, as well as Wham!, noted above as having produced their own self-promotion song.

Never mind the Pac Jam
Never mind the Gap Band
Never mind the Zap Band
Never mind the Funk Scam
'Cause we're The Red Hot Chili Peppers

Never mind the British bands
Never mind the synth funk bands
Never mind the Wham Wham band
Never mind Duran Duran
'Cause we're The Red Hot Chili Peppers

Never mind the Soft Cell shit
That's strictly for the twits
Never mind the Men At Work
Those tunes are for the jerks
'Cause we're The Red Hot Chili Peppers

Never mind Hall and Oates
Those guys are a couple of goats
Never mind the Culture Club
That jive's just one big flub
'Cause we're The Red Hot Chili Peppers

Very good.

And of course, they wrote a Replacements theme, bringing us back to our R'n'RHoF nominees.

And for the win: the flip side of the single was "Noollab Wolley."

Also
"Creeque Alley" by the Mamas and the Papas (100% autobiographical).
"Mother People" by the Mothers of Invention ("We're the Mother People, too." The band's actual name at the time the song was "The Mothers")
"Van Dyke Parks" by Van Dyke Parks
"Mr. Skin" by Spirit (referring to their drummer, Ed Cassidy)
"Bob Dylan's Dream"
"Liza with a Z"

Not truly a self reference, but I don't know of any band that got their name into a single song as many times as the Who did with "Who Are You".

[list]Josie and the Pussycats!
Long tails, and ears for hats!
Guitars and Marshall stacks
Hot, sweet, super-cool
Don't you know these kitties rule?
Hurry, hurry!

Driving in a custom... -painted van
Practicing for hours... don't you know that
Soon no matter where you go
We'll be on the radio?!

Josie and the Pussycats!
Hot lips, we'll give you that!
Stone foxes, oh, that's a fact
Josie and the Pussycats!

Even though we're playing... in our garage
Soon we'll have a massive... entouage
Going triple-platinum... you'll just watch us
Climbing up the
Billboard charts
Breaking records, breaking hearts!

Josie and the Pussycats!
Long tails, and ears for hats!
We know just where it's at
East, West, North, or South
Guaranteed to rock the house!

When I was young, there was this musical prodigy kid on the block, about one or two years older than me. I was over his house once and he was sitting at his piano. We weren't really friends. We weren't enemies either. But our parents socialized, so that's how I ended up there that weekend afternoon. And he said that he could play anything in the whole wide world on his piano, and then dared me to request a tune. Any tune. Reminiscing, I guess I would've liked to ask him to play some Gershwin Rhapsody in Blue, perhaps, or a real challenge, like Yesterday in the style of Beethoven, or at least the opening to Light My Fire. But I was only about seven or eight, and my musical knowledge was limited to things like the Batman TV theme song and Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. So I asked him to play the Banana Splits theme. Which, to my ears, he absolutely nailed. And that's my Banana Splits story.
