This may be a dumb question, but ...

Frayed Knot

The thread where you go to find out the latest info on what everyone in the world apparently knows about except you and so by asking here you can save yourself the trouble of asking people in the real world.

What is 'Duck Dynasty' all about?

I mean I'm pretty sure it's a show centered around a bunch of guys with long hair and beards who are apparently all related and currently occupy like 12 of the top 15 spots on the NY Times Bestseller list. But since I've never seen the show and probably aren't about to start, I have no idea what the whole thing has to do with ducks.

Do they Hunt them?
Cook them?
Breed them?
Paint them?
Have unusual relations with them?

Good question, they make the duck callers....not taking the piss either....they have cornered that market.....worth millions apparently.

Street, as in graffiti?
I always thought the addition of 'artist' onto the graffiti part was a bit of presumption on the part of what are usually spray-painting vandals, but your mileage may vary.

I should probably just re-name this thread: Irish gets Frayed caught up on all the holes in his pop-culture knowledge -- but of course others are free to spout their dumb (or not so dumb) questions here too.
I think I'm done here for now.

A month or two back, I learned that I'm really really supposed to have an opinion about whether Johnny Football is the real deal or not. Is he a pro player? A college player? A cartoon? I dunno. US football or the soccer kind? I am embarrassingly out of the loop.

This is probably not even worth knowing anymore, is it?

Is he a pro player? -- Not yet, and opinion seems divided as to whether he ever will be. Think of him as this year's Tim Tebow without the religion

A college player? -- At Texas A&M. He won the Heisman Trophy there last season as the first Freshman to do so - although he was 20 y/o at the time which, back when I was in college, was often called 'a Junior'.

A cartoon? -- Partially

US football or the soccer kind? -- 'merican dammit!!!!

I am embarrassingly out of the loop. -- Good for you

This is probably not even worth knowing anymore, is it? -- Probably not. He's usually described as an "exciting" player to watch and will be in the Heisman race again this year, although why that award holds so much credence in certain crowds is beyond me. But his type of runnin' and escapin' game doesn't often translate well at the next level so his pro prospects are considered iffy and so once he leaves the college game (he appears to want out like yesterday) the middle-aged men slobbering over him now will have moved on to the next thing ten minutes after he takes the A&M helmet off.

Re: This may be a dumb question, but ...

If you only watch one episode of Duck Dynasty, watch the one where they are trying to figure out what to do with a freezer full of bad venison.

The people on it are strange looking but it is slow paced, they don't swear, they don't scream, they don't fight and throw things at each other, and it is just a nice, funny family episode. They act like decent people.
It is probably why it is wildly popular, because it's so different from every thing else on TV.

Just got a new gig on MSNBC (or is it CNN?).
Plus his mom just "let it slip" that maybe his biological father wasn't Woody Allen after all but rather her then ex-hubby Frank Sinatra.
I suspect that that "slip" and the publicity for the new gig are not unrelated.

In fairness to young Ronan, he's reportedly quite bright--college at like 15 y/o, graduate school soon after, has already worked in the State Dept, etc.--so there's at least a chance, a chance I say, that his show is gong to deal with actual issues rather than mindless gossip and that it wasn't granted to him solely due to his celebrity genes.

Because he's Happily Married.

Ford responded to allegations that he had told a former woman staffer that he would “eat her pussy.” He responded “I’m happily married, I have more than enough to eat at home.”

Re: This may be a dumb question, but ...

On the other hand, talking to my N Carolina born and living bro-in-law this past weekend: mid-50s, lawyer, well-off, etc.
For some reason he stumbled across DD and was prepared to hate it seeing as how he doesn't watch reality shows and generally has his antenna out for stereotypes of dumb southerners ... and wound up totally hooked. He ended up watching about four shows in a row and since has caught up on whatever it was he missed leading up to that point. Totally loves the show and thinks it's hysterical. Turns out, also, that most or all of that entire crew are college educated and were doing quite well before the TV show ever took off.

I still haven't watched the show and probably won't ... but, between him and this place, I've now learned more about DD in the last two weeks than I knew from the beginning of the show until then. Prior to all this I just knew that they looked like they belonged on the Red Sox.

Of course in Barry's case he actually was forced from office ... although:
- that had more to do with being arrested in the act. This Canadian dude's transgressions seem to be things he's (eventually) admitting to in the past rather than doing now. (he may be doing them now too but I'm not sure there's proof of that)
- Barry, however, was later re-elected as Mayor and has several times been re-re-elected to city council jobs despite the fact that he opts not to actually pay taxes like virtually every single year. Is good at spending tax money apparently, just not so quick to contribute to the fund.

Re: This may be a dumb question, but ...

Barry once planned a party to celebrate beating a prison sentence on a tax evasion charge --- to be paid for by a third party who helped him beat-the-charge-and-of-course-he-has-no-personal-interest-in-currying-favor-with-a-public-official-how-dare-you-imply-such-a-thing. The party was scrapped at the last minute amid revelations that, while fighting that tax evasion charge from a previous year, he didn't pay again in the current year.

Still, Ford, Barry, Dixon, Nagin --- the top unrepentant mayor is Kwame Kilpatrick. That guy brung his A-game every night. He was probably an accessory to at least one murder before all was said and done.
