Wishful Pipes

You're at a place where they're doing Karaoke, they shove a microphone in front of you and ask you to sing. Me? I've got a voice that's pure monotone, guaranteed to clear the room. So I do a song I can basically speak to, like Sultans of Swing (Dire Straits). But I wish I could sing like Steve Perry. What pop artist do you wish you could sound like when you sing? Later

I'd have to give some more thought into whose voice I'd like to keep, but it would be fun to be able to belt like Freddie Mercury if even for one day.

I'm no Judybat, but neither Liza Minelli nor Ben Grimm (I imagine) have been gifted with Judy Garland's voice, except maybe in the sense that Liza at her best sounded like broken-down Judy at her worst.

That kinda thing changes over the years for me. I remember in the late 70's, after I got the album City To City, I wished I sounded like Gerry Rafferty. He had such a velvety voice. Smooth. That wish must have changed hands to other singers dozens of times over the years. In retrospect if pressed now I'd have to say Nilsson's voice in its prime, around 1970. He could use that voice for anything from a sweet ballad to ripping rock. I've never liked my own singing voice. I wonder if good singers feel the same way about their singing voices.

Bob's younger cousin Bruce Seger works the lake resort circuit in the upper northwest. Had a nice window of opportunity opening for Mellancamp back in 1989-90, and his video "Forever Girl" got some light MTV rotation, but Arista dropped him in the Great Grunge Purge, and he's been grinding it ever since. Briefly resurfaced in 2002c taking over the role of Ren in Footloose: The Musical. Playing a teenage rebel at 39 was no picnic but he had kept in shape and his childhood training at the Kalamazoo Ballet Academy (KalBal) really paid off. His famous name is both a blessing and a curse. When folks inevitably ask him if he'll do "Against the Wind" or "Night Moves" or (God help him) "Old Time Rock 'n' Roll," he smiles genially and explains that it's is policy not to do his cousin's songs, "... and he makes it a policy not to do any of mine." People... waddayagonnado?
