The scale is just unthinkable. The cyclone that hit Inda recently was the size of France. India, thanks to modern communications technology, was able to evacuate a million people and left the initial death toll in the dozens, whereas 10,000 had died in a similar storm back in 1999. Triumph! But this baby is the size of, I don't know, China. And evacuating an island nation is problematic. And several islands are filled with homeless folks after getting hit by a recent earthquake.

Thanks to communication infrastructure damage, it'll be a while before there's an accurate account of damage/casualties. I've got a bunch of family over there, mostly in Quezon City/metro Manila. But a cousin and her husband are doctors in Tacloban, in the south, near one of the primary impact areas; they relocated to a slightly-more-inland hotel Thursday night, and posted some scary post-landfall video yesterday evening. We're still waiting for confirmation that they rode it out okay.

Think nothing of it, Irish. Still waiting on word. Celebrating a bar mitzvah today for my cousin's boy, and hearing casualty estimates of 1200 or more... it's a little bit of a mixed-bag, emotionally.

Still haven't able to get direct contact from my cousin and her in-laws, but we got something like confirmation (my aunt was able to contact oil-company security personnel with feet on the ground, and they had been through the area) that they and the hotel's other guests left the hotel after the storm passed, as the hotel was closed/locked because of looting. Which we presume means that they are okay, and just incommunicado due to infrastructure problems. Which is what we've got as of now... presumption and hoping. OE: My cousin Diane just got a call from the missing cousin/husband; they made it to her husband's uncle's house (with cell reception in a small area nearby), and are seeking shelter there for the moment. (In a roofless house with compromised walls, but still.) They're working on getting the couple/his parents out of Tacloban, as there's another storm reportedly tracking toward the area in the next day or two.

The first photos my agency is getting back are from Tacloban. The shots I've seen suggest the city is largely leveled, but the good news is that the aid agencies are there --- while many other locales have yet to be reached.

After a harrowing van/barge ride, cousin and husband are safely to Bicol, north-northeast of Tacloban/Leyte (the primarily-affected island), staying at her sister's friend's house, awaiting a puddle-jump flight to Manila this morning. They also have reliable cellular access for the first time since just after landfall... which means that her husband just found out he lost three cousins and two aunts due to storm surge in another hotel.

A key difference is that the Jonas Brothers are from Westlake, America's wealthiest town, and these guys are from Tacloban and are currently homeless. The Filipino cover band industry inexplicably fascinates me. But I just love the notion of seeing the Beatles (by proxy) help heal the Philippines like they helped heal the US 50 years ago, especially since the last time the actual band visited the Philippines, they left running.

Wikipedia says the Jonas Brothers are from Wyckoff, NJ. I know because I researched Wyckoff while looking at houses there. Nice place. big fan of 3Chica's Burritos.
