going to WAR with your metly pitchers (quiz)

metsmarathon
Nov 22 2013 11:33 AM

corresponding to my other quiz, i just pulled the list of the metly pitchers with the top 50 WARs for their metly career, according to baseball reference.

i then ranked those top 50 according to WAR per 250 innings pitched, as reported again by baseball reference.

some obvious names will be in the list, but some not so obvious names may sneak in as well. so, who is in the top ten?

2.

Re: going to WAR with your metly pitchers (quiz)

Is there an innings minimum? Are relievers included? Like my man, Armando, who loses out to the vastly inferior Roger McDowell in every all time Mets poll? Who didn't get his mug on one of the 81 home season tickets in the Mets 50th anniversary season?

Re: going to WAR with your metly pitchers (quiz)

minimum 4.3 metly-career WAR, because ol' roger mcdowell is the met pitcher with the 50th highest WAR total, at a meager 4.3 WAR.

mcdowell is at 2.30 WAR/250IP, good for 43rd on the list. so don't use him, okay, he's not a right answer.

matt harvery, on the other hand, is already up to 6.7 WAR, in a meager 237 innings. that's a 7.27 WAR/250IP right there, tops on our list.

1. matt harvey 7.27 WAR/250 IP

cross-posting about roger mcdowell not meriting a spot on the top 50 mets pitchers on a WAR/250 IP basis. cool.

armando benitez is of course eligible for consideration, as he has a total of 9.8 WAR, far in excess of roger mcdowell's meager sum. he's our #2. which is perhaps oddly fitting, depending upon how you view his tenure.

mcgraw - ya gotta be kidding!
franco - john or julio...? because julio never pitched and john isn't in the top fifteen
viola - cello
bross - in his ten major league metly innings, terry bross notched just 0.3 WAR. this is nowhere near enough to get him onto the top 50 mets pitchers in terms of WAR generated. but on a per-inning ratio, he'd be better than bret saberhagen, gettint a cool 6 WAR/200 IP.
bearnarth - surely this guess is beneath you. in almost 320 innings, larry amassed a mere 0.6 WAR. no. no. this is not good.

if you'd like a hint i'll happily tell you this. the last remaining hitter never faced any of the three remaining pitchers. the last remaining hitter player with one of the pitchers, but not while they were a met. the other two pitchers are one step removed from playing with the hitter, per bbref's oracle of baseball.

i'm merely echoing my disgust.

also, i made a math error on some of my unrankies. notably, terry bross should be at 7.5 WAR/250 IP. i'd calculated for 200 IP. how comes he only got ten freaking innings pitched from us, anyways? bearnarth looks a little better, but still, bad. looper was correctly calculated.
