Love Me Non-Tender

The deadline for teams to decide whether or not to offer some of their players contracts is December 2nd at 11pm central time. Non-tendering a player makes him a free agent.
Back on early November I saw that there could be as many as 190 players eligible. Many of them have probably been given offers and/or re-signed. If anyone has seen a more recent list, could you please post it?
Thanks.

Thanks.
Not too many names jump off the page at me for players the Mets should pick up.
Oh well ...

Are any of them shortstops?

Re: Love Me Non-Tender

Of that list I think the Mets could probably use Seth Smith -- lefty hitting corner OF, useful vs, RHP.

Others, I dunno. Lou Marson sounds like an old-time prizefighter; and Sam Fuld a discount menswear store in the garment district.

Oh, do go on. Michael McKenry, senator from Maryland. Justin Ruggiano, Penn State defensive tackle.

Tommy Hanson, on the other hand, sounds like... a good guy to take a flyer on?

Tommy Hanson sounds like the bad boy in high school that the girl you have a crush on is attracted to.

He's actually the first cousin of the band.

Maybe. But I'd have to find out if that drop-off in games and innings was a result of an arm injury.

Who is ACTUALLY A NARC!

Though, all joking aside, Mat Gamel's still just 26, and a possible cheapo corner-IF bench bat/post-hype-production candidate. And-- Winter League control issues notwithstanding-- Bard is two years removed-- and one bad year-- from a couple of seasons of some useful late-inning nastiness. Also, I've always always always enjoyed Drew Stubbs' barbecue sauce and slow-cooking-themed family-entertainment parks.

If you look at Bard than maybe also Kevin Jepsen (rush chairman, damn glad to meet ya) who's also had an inconsistent career but throws really hard and strikes guys out.

If options Aleph and Beth don't pan out, Mat Gamel's definitely worth a look. He hasn't done anything in the majors, but the guy can hit.

Not to rebut you (and myself), but just worth mentioning... he hasn't actually hit in the majors, either.

So... call him, maybe?

FIP likes him a lot more than the Angels (presumably) do. Doesn't give up many longballs, much like Mississippi's fourth-richest gentleman farmer, Mitchell Boggs.

Now let's see who breaks down the door now that this "incredible talent" is available.

I already had Atchy down as a free agent, refusing to believe, despite the credible testimony, that he hadn't yet clocked six seasons of service time.

If somebody told you he'd pitched for the Expos, tell me you wouldn't believe.

LOTS of room on the roster, gonna get filled somehow. Excitement!

Plus, Tyler Flowers re-ups with White Sox.

So the idea is to not have any shortstops in 2014?

It could work. Wright or Murphy cheats toward second, depending on who's up, Lagares plays a little shallower, and you put a fourth outfielder out there for the deep balls. It's totally worth a try.

Totally throws a wet blanket over Wright's wedding.

Turner joins Dickey as Mets sent packing after playing nice for the holidays.

Re: Love Me Non-Tender

I'm surprised by Hefner, especially sine he wasn't even arb-eligible. He pitched well enough before his injury to justify keeping him around for the league minimum and seeing how he looks in 2015. Players like Turner are easy to find for less than Turner would make in arbitration, so I'm glad to see the team wasn't overvaluing him.

Re: Love Me Non-Tender

On the other hand, Hefner's unlikely to be available for the first part (half?) of next season and being the odd man out via roster shuffling now doesn't preclude the possibility of re-signing him later on.

Re: Love Me Non-Tender

I think Hefner is expected to miss all of 2014. I'm surprised that he was non-tendered; he has a few years left of team control and he could eventually provide cheap rotation depth.

Who pays his medical bills now that he's a free agent? I imagine his continuing rehab won't be cheap. Does the players union cover that? I don't imagine anyone will sign him until he's a lot closer to being ready to pitch.

Re: Love Me Non-Tender

Yeah, Hefner's surgery wasn't until late August (I was thinking it was somewhat earlier) so that should make most, if not all, of 2014 a washout for him - at least as far as being a ML pitcher goes.

Not sure of the specifics of how his medical coverage is handled at this point - except to say that I'm sure he's not one of those suddenly fumbling with the Obama-care website in search of options.

Re: Love Me Non-Tender

Well, this leaves enough room on the 40 man roster for Sandy to add players. The next few weeks will be interesting to see how he goes about doing it.

I assume it's too late to add some of the players who are currently exposed to the Rule 5 draft?

Re: Love Me Non-Tender

I'm fine with all these moves. Jordanny, don't let the door hit ya where the good lord split ya. Turner will get more in arb than he's worth. Hef? His roster spot will be more valuable than he is. If they want to take a flyer on him later, when he's showed he's recovered from serious arm surgery, he could still be available. If not, not. there's more where he came from.

Re: Love Me Non-Tender

Good for Justin. Maybe he'll get the at bats somewhere else. I'll miss the guy. I thought he was more than adequate as a filler-guy in the infield. Considering we got him on a waiver claim he served us well.
Hef is just a wise move.
