Mets by the Scout

Hi, I'm Marlin McPhail. I'm one of those guys who you, sleeping soundly in your beds, give nary a thought to. But I have the power to make you happy or sad. I'm a big league scout. And while scouting for the Mets, this has been my legacy:

It may seem like a generally pedestrian bunch, or a mixed bag, but I bet I stack up well against most scouts. Let's face it. If most players don't reach the bigs, that means most scouts aren't netting big leaguers. I'm not quite sure what it means in this day and age to say a scout "signs" a prospect, when a potential #1 pick is going to be cross-checked by several guys, and ultimately brought in to negotiate with the team's top brass, but I like that somebody is still recording that somebody in the organization was the definitive champion of the likes of Matt Harvey (and Bobby Parnell, and, um, Jeremy Gould). I like that because I was that guy. I'm Marlin McPhail.

Tell, me about it, Marlin!

Hi, I'm Jack Zdurienicik, currently under siege as GM (and alleged fraud) with the Seattle Mariners. In between extended periods of trying to spell my name, I've held several different posts with YOUR New York Mets.

[list][*]Area Scout, 1983-1989[/*:m]
[*]National Crosschecker, 1990[/*:m]
[*]National Crosschecker again 1994-1995[/*:m]
[*]Director of Minor League Operations, 1995-1998[/*:m]
[*]Special Assistant to the General Manager, 1998[/*:m][/list:u]

You might think that's a heckuva lotta tenure, but during that time, only six Mets players have officially fallen onto my ledger sheet as Zdurienicik signings, and while three have made the majors, and a .500 batting average should be encouraging, the overall results are, well, I'm not planning to present them as Exhibit A as I seek to defend my honor this coming week.

He's been keeping busy out west.

Good Lord, that's one damning player roll for Ol' Jackie Z.

That's one surprsingly narrow way to look at it.

Also, he scouted Harvey, who's not even gonna pitch next season.

Yeah, the proof is in the pudding, and that sort of pudding is not the type the kids from the Pink Floyd record are going to eat happily.

Hi, I'm Steve Leavitt, and when not inspiring over-produced mid-eighties singles by YES, I've beaten the bushes for Mets (though now with the Twins) looking for prospects. My territory typically has been Southern California and Hawaii, and MAN SAKES, the women.

But you can't allow yourself to get distracted, because that moment is the difference between the signing CRAP or CARP, and while Jack Zdurienicik has landed you plenty of the former, I'm the guy who signed the latter.

Hi, suckers. I'm Randy "Moose" Millgan.

You may know me as a fringey, thick-in-the-middle firstbaseman of Met seasons past. But I stayed in the game as a scout, and between the Mets and my current organization of Baltimore, TheBaseballCube credits me with all of one (ONE!) signing.

I asked Moose Milligan for an interview once. He said he was busy.

You should know better than to stand between me and my Wendy's, Bucket.

To his credit, I think he was slenderer as an Oriole. Or possibly, black is simply slimming.
