Granderson agrees to 4 years w/Mets, says Sherman.

G-Fafif Dec 06 2013 09:45 AM Re: Actually Curtis |
4 for $60M, apparently.

What was the last _major_ player to go from Yankees to Mets or vice-versa? Do Ventura and Benitez count?
|
G-Fafif Dec 06 2013 09:57 AM Re: Actually Curtis |
|
Those were essentially salary dumps by Mets and theoretically useful pieces for MFYs. Granderson probably first (more or less) in his prime star to "defect" directly. Or since Tim McCarver changed booths.

Edgy MD Dec 06 2013 10:38 AM Re: Actually Curtis |
It will, though. Gary will say it with a twinge of irony, but he'll say it. And once he repeats it 37th time, the irony will be lost.

Its a damn good thing our announcers do NOT have a Berman/Sterling-esque habit of making nonsensical nicknames or calls based on puns!

We shall see, if it turns out to be another Bay, or Beltran. In terms of both performance and potential way of leaving the roster if the direction of the franchise hasn't improved by about 20 wins by year 4. =;)

bmfc1 Dec 06 2013 11:16 AM Re: Actually Curtis |
Great move. They needed power and a lefty bat and they have both in Granderson. Well done.
|
Ceetar Dec 06 2013 11:21 AM Re: Actually Curtis |

I suspect it'll be somewhere in the middle of both players, but that's not really saying much.

Hey, if Gary makes 37 Granderson home run calls next season, he can say whatever the hell he wants.
|
metsmarathon Dec 06 2013 11:48 AM Re: Actually Curtis |
i like this a lot. i like granderson at 4/60 a lot better than i would have liked ellsbury at 7/150, or cano at 10/240.
|
metsmarathon Dec 06 2013 12:04 PM Re: Actually Curtis |
regarding granderson's power, if you look to hittrackeronline, you can take a loot at grandy's home runs, normalized for atmospheric conditions, and compare them against ballpark dimensions.
|
Ceetar Dec 06 2013 12:08 PM Re: Actually Curtis |

wind conditions, pitchers, etc. but yeah. My only real concern there is that it seems like he may have altered his approach in 2012 in a homer happy way that led to a not very good season despite hitting a bunch. That approach has all the makings of trouble. but I have faith that wouldn't be the case.

It's their way of saying that they were beaten to the story (or, at best, that they reported it no earlier than 956 other sources) but still get to credit themselves with being among the ones cited as the source of this material.

Ceetar Dec 06 2013 01:27 PM Re: Actually Curtis |

Yeah, we were flipping to it at lunch during Millionaire commercials and it seemed like they waited until they had someone ESPN affiliated to talk about that they put it in the "Breaking News" section.

Yeah, that's been ESPN's MO for decades now. "Don't credit anyone but ourselves."

Good hitter, good defender, class act, Fills a need. Not a terrible contract.

|
Benjamin Grimm Dec 07 2013 03:24 PM Re: Actually Curtis |
Looks like someone clued them in. They've repaired the online version, (the 14 was in the print edition) and removed the 4.

So if he comes in and hits like 75 kabooms or we win the division 3 times in a row the newspaper could become a collectors item? Right? Lemme know before recycling on Monday.

Declining hitter (over the last three years, steadily), declining defender (also over the last three years, if less steadily), moving to a position where his bat becomes less valuable, costs a high 2nd-round draft pick, may tie up more payroll than a similar/better asset in trade (Aoki, e.g.) would have. On the plus side, he'll still have some power, and he's fast, and maybe the glove plays better in right (like, at least a scratch-defender level). Also, he knows Beyonce!
