Granderson agrees to 4 years w/Mets, says Sherman.

What was the last _major_ player to go from Yankees to Mets or vice-versa? Do Ventura and Benitez count?

Those were essentially salary dumps by Mets and theoretically useful pieces for MFYs. Granderson probably first (more or less) in his prime star to "defect" directly.

Or since Tim McCarver changed booths.

Re: Actually Curtis

Does Murphy give up 28?

Granderson won't get 14 obviously. flipping that is 41, obviously no go.

He wore #26 when he first got called up, but was 28 in the minors.

56? 82?

Re: Actually Curtis

This totally puts a wet blanket on the Nelson Cruz buzz, doesn't it?

So our outfield, while stronger by bounds, remains as muddled as ever.

[list]MLB 25-Man Roster: Brown, Duda, Granderson, Young, Young.

Also on 40-Man Roster: den Dekker, Lagares, Niuewenhuis, Puello.[/list:u]

So despite Lagares' performance, he suddenly finds himself on the outside until/unless they (a) make room for Duda at first, (b) make room for Young at second, (c) trade an outfielder, or (d) try to push Brown through waivers.

I hope that this doesn't mean that Eric Young displaces Murphy; I'd prefer Eric to be a fourth outfielder. Of course, my feelings on this particular issue may change if Murphy is part of a spectacular trade.

Its a damn good thing our announcers do NOT have a Berman/Sterling-esque habit of making nonsensical nicknames or calls based on puns!

We shall see, if it turns out to be another Bay, or Beltran. In terms of both performance and potential way of leaving the roster if the direction of the franchise hasn't improved by about 20 wins by year 4. =;)

I suspect it'll be somewhere in the middle of both players, but that's not really saying much.

Hey, if Gary makes 37 Granderson home run calls next season, he can say whatever the hell he wants.

Re: Actually Curtis

i like this a lot. i like granderson at 4/60 a lot better than i would have liked ellsbury at 7/150, or cano at 10/240.

also, i really hope not to see eric young take a meaningful, everyday role on this team. he's a useful spare part, but should not be an everyday player. if he's in our outfield and lagares is not, i'll be quite unhappy.

moreso if he's at second and murphy is not, (unless there's a massive return).

Re: Actually Curtis

regarding granderson's power, if you look to hittrackeronline, you can take a loot at grandy's home runs, normalized for atmospheric conditions, and compare them against ballpark dimensions.

last year, each of grandy's homers easily clears our right field fence.
in 2012, all but 9 of hte 43 homers he hit clear our fences. last i checked, 34 homers wouldn't be so bad. and a lot of them are gappers that could turn into extra bases and not just long fly outs. with his speed, maybe there's some extra triples in there. who knows.
in 2011, there's 4-6 of his 41 homers that might not make it out.

dude's got power. he's no cheap yankee stadium sham-homerun illusion.

wind conditions, pitchers, etc. but yeah.

My only real concern there is that it seems like he may have altered his approach in 2012 in a homer happy way that led to a not very good season despite hitting a bunch. That approach has all the makings of trouble.

but I have faith that wouldn't be the case.

Does that mean "yeah, other people said this and we're going to tell you about it like we're intimately involved, after we talk about Tim Tebow and tell you meaningless things about football."

Re: Actually Curtis

Assuming he gets $15 million in 2014, the payroll projects now to approx. $78.8 million:

http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams ... ries.shtml

Last year's payroll was $89 million. Hopefully they will go to at least $95 which would leave Sandy $16m to get a starting pitcher and at least one more credible major league bat.

I think Arroyo is the logical next move in the $10-11 million range and then will take some skilled trading to squeeze a bat into the budget. I think they will regret tendering Ike.

Declining hitter (over the last three years, steadily), declining defender (also over the last three years, if less steadily), moving to a position where his bat becomes less valuable, costs a high 2nd-round draft pick, may tie up more payroll than a similar/better asset in trade (Aoki, e.g.) would have.

On the plus side, he'll still have some power, and he's fast, and maybe the glove plays better in right (like, at least a scratch-defender level). Also, he knows Beyonce!
