The first day of the week is celebrated by moon worshippers everywhere. But for most of the rest of us, it is the day we return to our work, often part from our families, and put aside the leisure clothes.

What is your Monday-titled song? Please vote, and please don't dump a bunch of other crap in this thread that you're not voting for, because that's uncool. If you have a vote for a non-listed selection, certainly please share.

Great poll!

I went with the Wilco song, but love the Bangles, Boomtowns, Tegan & Sara and Duran Duran choices as well.

Re: Monday Melodies

That's a good latter-day performance video of the Bangs, too, with them doing a fun tease intro. Can't tell if that's Michael Steele back on bass or they just put out a casting call for a tall badass-looking redhead to fool folks into thinking it's her.

Heard the John Prine song yesterday and voted that way. Several good choices.

Re: Monday Melodies

Tough decision between "Stormy Monday" and "I Don't Like Mondays," but the Rats win out.

I am a "Stormy Monday" fan, and though it's also worth mentioning the Allman Brothers very solid version from Live at the Fillmore, I think my favorite one is actually this BBC recording.

We've got three Other votes. Seawolf's is one, and I assume Fman for Tull is number two. What's the third?

Interestingly, the teaser intro on the live clip of "Monday Morning" was boring seventies rawk stuff.

I went Bangles.

Funny, this popped into my head when I opened this thread:

It was a Monday
A day like any other day
I left a small town
For the Apple in decay

I went with T-Bone.

Meandering Monday trivia: Did you know one of the songs in this poll is the artistic grandchild of one of the other songs? It's true!

Which two songs are so related, and how? (Hint: It has nothing, at least explicitly, to do with their Mondayness.)

Re: Monday Melodies

Good Lord, Buckingham's teeth were numb there, weren't they?

Just out of the money: Fats Domino, Bangles
Show: New Order (I've always had a weakness for the Joy Division family tree)
Place: Mac (I've always had a weakness for a pounding Fleetwood and cokey Lindsey)
Win: Wilco ('Cause, c'mon)

Re: Monday Melodies

That big dumb rawk intro just makes me angry. The Buckingham shuffle of "Monday Morning" (along with "Secondhand News") is to my thinking what Mac does best. Cut to the chase, guys.

Funny to see Christine McVie playing maracas. If she gets the incidental percussion, then there's nothing for Stevie to do but twirl her cape.

By the way, Cracker's mailed-in cover of "RD&M" is embematic of everything that went wrong in the 1990s, where bands were just so removed that they never wanted you to know if they were sincere or ironic. Everybody on the Carpenters cover album claimed to be big fans but Lowery and company really seem to smear that song in crap, don't they?

I felt that it was high-profile enough that I had to include it, but goodness gracious me.

But on the plus side... most of the rest of that Carpenters album-- Shonen Knife, Sonic Youth, Redd Kross, a sturdy outing from Sheryl Crow-- was pretty damn solid.

The Mamas and the Papas one is pleasant, but it's just kinda replacement-level McGuinning, innit?

And yeah, that's Michael Steele-- I'd recognize that wan, pouty punim anywhere.

I thought so too, but current records say she last played with them in 2004, and this seems perhaps somewhat after.

So here's the deal. Prince wrote "Manic Monday," allegedly offering it to the Bangles as a Susanna Hoffs admirer, perhaps with hopes of a blossoming romance with an attractive woman short enough to step out with him on Friday night. Lesser known is he knocked it out by ripping off his own work.

> "I was dreaming when I wrote this; forgive me if it goes too fast."

> "Six o'clock already; I was just in the middle of a dream."

Sing 'em one on top of the other and you hear it. You can't not hear it. You wonder why you didn't always hear it. The two melodies trace one another pretty nicely, and one can speculate that he delivered "Manic Monday" under a pseudonym to make the parallel a little less obvious

But on top of THAT, "1999" itself started it's life as a bit of knockoff. The opening synth hook by Dr. Fink goes D, G---, D-G-D!! That's pretty much taken beat for beat from the vocal harmonies on "Monday, Monday" by the Mamas & the Papas.

So "1999" has a Monday song both as a parent and a child, and I wouldn't be surprised if Prince turned it into a Monday song just because it was already in the DNA.

If you've got a band and you're looking for three songs to medley together, you can do worse than "Monday, Manic 1999 Monday."
