Fans of the old gods love to use Tuesday as a reason to break out their Týr tee shirts and other memorobilia, but most of us don't know what to do with it. Americans treat it as a good day to vote, only we don't do that very often. Problem drinkers treat it as back-to-work day. In the Orthodox world, John the Baptist is held up on Tuesday. Tuesday's a good day to fatten up before Lent, crash a stock market, or launch a new Microsoft patch.

It's also a good day to listen to these tunes, but one more than the others.

1. "Call It Stormy Monday (But Tuesday's Just As Bad)" - T-Bone Walker (I couldn't decide which poll to put it in, so it got in both Monday and Tuesday.)

Re: Tunes for Tuesday

I'm thinking these monster polls are just preliminary play and we'll have to go World Cup-like and break into group play in order to arrive at something conclusive.

Which doesn't mean we don't need votes, because we do. An entire day of the week depends on it. ONE SEVENTH OF THE TEMPORAL ECONOMY!

Jeez, who's the host for Badfinger?

"Groovy Tuesday" is likely gonna carry the day for me.

The Pogues

Re: Tunes for Tuesday

The Pogues song has no business being that good, does it? An interloper nineties lineup with their tin whistle player defaulting to lead vocals and they get their biggest stateside hit that actually is a damned cool song.

When I saw then on their return-to-action tour that re-integrated their "Fall from Grace" lineup, there was a bit of a row on stage as to whether Shane was ready to yield the mic to one of the other players. Chevron stepped up to the mic and said "Excuse me folks, need to sort out some family business."

Shane gave way and and the opening banjo arpeggio starts, and I said, "Oh wow, I forgot about this one." When the mandolin riff comes in, my wife says, "How did you forget this? I can already tell this is a great song."

Somehow, once Shane rejoined the band, it's like the entire fan base, without saying a word, had come to a tacit agreement that the two post-Shane albums in the nineties officially didn't count, and we wiped them from our collective memories. This was stupid in retrospect as both albums had some good stuff and good for the band for including "Tuesday Morning" in the setlist, essentially telling us "Those albums happened, deal with it."

In short, I voted for the Interloper Pogues too.

Spider Stacy on vocals in the original and Chevron in the live shows I saw too. It really is a great song, great bass beat too.

It's funny. I always think "Tuesday Afternoon" is by Badfinger. Then the orchestrations get lusher and lusher and lusher, and vocal echo gets deeper and deeper, and I think, "Fuck it, this is the Moody Blues. Badfinger did that other Tuesday song.

"Tuesday Afternoon" is pretty but collapses under its own weight. And it certainly isn't the only MooBlue song you can say that about.

And on that note, I took the Moody Blues. Love that song.

For a Ramones fan, Kong fears no big production, and makes no apologies.

Days of Future Passed works better as a full album, but you need to get the fader working early if listening only to individual tracks.

Re: Tunes for Tuesday

You all know I'm a big Cat fan but if I was making a CD mix of Tuesday songs it would evolve around the Stones Ruby Tuesday. That song is etched into the musical nostalgia section of my brain more than any other Tuesday song. Never a big Stones fan, always liked em a lot but bought maybe three of their albums over the years. So this surprises even me.

Re: Tunes for Tuesday

No, I voted for Tuesday Afternoon, but before I even read what you had said I thought "That's a great song, but almost overbearing in a way. It makes me think of kindergarten and missing my mom".

I LOVE Lynyrd Skynyrd and don't know why I completely overlooked "Tuesday's Gone", which is a big favorite of mine.

I also happen to love Melanie (she is, in fact one of my friends on facebook, how about that for 5 things you didn't know about me) but I don't really like Ruby Tuesday.

Confused yet? :)

Not at all. I knew this pool would be cooby's great clash of coobyvalues.

Skynyrd was my second, Smithereens my third.
Saw Skynyrd at Foxwoods some time back. They still rock.

Re: Tunes for Tuesday

I won't argue this, because it's a taste thing, not a merit-judgement thing (not really, anyway), but I'll just say it, and leave it there, and never really say it again, I promise: I hate Skynyrd. I mean, I really hate Skynyrd. The aesthetic, the noodling, the redneck shufflin', the stupid Ys... I hate it, hate it, hate it like it punched my mother in the face and then made a racist joke about my daughter.

But "Tuesday's Gone" is the absolute tits. It's gorgeous. It's Pogues-toppling, Moody Blues-shaming magic.

And don't even bring that Beatles-cop "Ruby Tuesday" weaksauce into this.

Re: Tunes for Tuesday

That's a brave vote. That's the sort of brand resistance we could all use a little more of.
