Thursday, of course, takes it's name from the god Thor. But not a lot of songs which reference the day can be said to thunder. Thursday is a day of cleaning (for those who care about such things) and press days for movie and play debuts. The market crashed on a Thursday in 1929, but still we give thanks on a Thursday. Jesus bid farewell to his disciples, but still we give thanks. Arthur Dent said he never could get the hang of Thursdays, and moments later the earth was destroyed. For some reason, though, it remains our Thanksgiving day.

"Thursday's child" has far to go, says the rhyme. Sweet Thursday is a novel by John Steinbeck, a sequel to Cannery Row. You mayn't think about either of these two literary references very often, but they lend their name to nearly half of our contestants as we seek to discover the signature Thursday song.

Re: Thursday Things

Sir Duke.
I'll leave it to Kase to vote for his favorite foreign female singer.

Re: Thursday Things

Tanita Tikaram was a FFF singer of mine back in the early nineties. And she's, like super-foreign, a German-born Brit with a Malay mother, and an Indo-Fijian father. Plus she's a petite woman with a tenor-range voice, which is another kind of foreign.

She gets my vote, even though the video features some terrible lip-syncing. That song is produced, by the way, by current R'n'R HoF nominee Rod Argent of the Zombies.

Re: Thursday Things

I raise a couple of beers and my pool cue for "Thursday" - Morphine.

Re: Thursday Things

Bowie '99 is my number two. Croce and Giles, Giles, and Fripp are competing for third.

I don't know, and to my knowledge have never heard, any of these songs.

The video embeds are there to help you.

Re: Thursday Things

Yeah, I pretty much figured that part out.
The problem is that by the time I sit down and listen to 17 different songs enough times to make an honest evaluation of them it not only will no longer be Thursday, it'll no longer be next Thursday.

Re: Thursday Things

I know. I live to serve, but I ask so much also.

I beg only that you give it a college try. Sometimes, you know a song isn't doing it for you with in a few moments. You're bored stiff by the intro, so you move the stylus to the center to see if it gets anywhere. If it does, you dial back to the beginning. If it doesn't, on to the next song.

We'll break 'em into smaller manageable portions later, I promise.

Re: Thursday Things

I came to bat for Morphine, but... well... some surprisingly strong entries here. Will pray on it a little and give my finalists one more turn before voting, proper.

Re: Thursday Things

Between Morphine and Giles Giles & Fripp. Went with the latter because someone should.

Re: Thursday Things

That Morphine song --- at least the video I have of it --- starts out kinda bad. The baritone sax honking sporadically is annoying. But it totally gets gooder.

Re: Thursday Things

Oh, inDEED. Buena, buena, buena, buena, goodgoodgood.

But, for me, it's a nasty battle royale between the Morphine, the Asobi Seksu (like Echo and the Bunnymen and, like, Kate Bush had a superlayered dreamybaby and gave it a cute, hyperliterate Japanese frontwoman's face), the Tikaram, the Giles Giles Fripp, and the Ellington OH GOD THE ELLINGTON.

Re: Thursday Things

The Bowie song, once you bump past the silence at the beginning, was also surprisingly a contender for me. Who knew there were actually performances on Top of the Pops?
