12th Annual (!!!) CPF Charity Gift Exchange

A Boy Named Seo
Nov 27 2013 05:39 PM

It's time again for this fine tradition, started way back in the golden era of Messrs Mo Vaughan and Jason Phillips. The way it works is this --->> each participant gives the name of a charity they support. After a random drawing of names, each of us gives a donation of a pre-determined amount to the charity we drew. That's it.

In years previous, we've done amounts ranging from $18 to $20 to $25, thereabouts, and some benevolent souls have gone above and beyond cause they feel like it, but that's not expected at all.

It's a nice way to do a little something for someone else, somewhere else, that's in need. If you're in, say so here (and include your wonderful charity!) and we'll shuffle up and deal after we wake from our turkey hangovers.

Thanks for kick, as always, Sharon! And happy thanksgiving and beyond to you cranes here at the Pool.

The Charity Gift Exchange is a great tradition of the CPF. Thanks to Seo for once again organizing this wonderful effort.

I will once again choose the V Foundation for my charity. Their site may be found here: [url]http://www.jimmyv.org/

If it is okay with everyone else, I would like to double up by submitting two charities this year. In return, I will most gladly take 2 of the charities submitted by other members of the forum.

For my second charity, I wish to submit the Fisher House Foundation as a memorial tribute to my father for his 23 years of military service. Their site may be found here: [url]http://www.fisherhouse.org

Re: 12th Annual (!!!) CPF Charity Gift Exchange

The 11518, for the storm-stricken residents of East Rockaway, the South Shore community I called home for 12 years -- still fighting back from Sandy, forever getting confused with all the other Rockaways and even befuddling state inspectors who didn't show up as scheduled to check on flood damage because they just assumed this little slice of Nassau County sat in Queens...which East Rockaway does not so much as border. (I experienced this type of mistaken identity repeatedly under more benign circumstances; and what Mets fan doesn't know what it's like to be from New York and have it assumed that if you like baseball you must be a fan of some other local team?)

More info here.

Once again I put forward International Children's Heart Foundation

A lot of you probably see me sharing their amazing work on my FB page, it would be rare for a child to die in this country from a heart defect because they did not have access to the care needed, unfortunately it is not the case in various parts of the world....Russia included

They are currently in Benghazi

Another great thing is they not only do the surgeries but also train local surgeons , RN"s etc. to do the procedures.

Wouldn't want to miss this.

I'm pretty quiet under normal circumstances, so it may not have been noticed that I've done almost no posting in the past few months. I've had a lot going on in my life - some good, some bad. About the worst is that my dad was diagnosed with stage 3 esophageal cancer. So, in his honor, http://www.ecan.org/site/PageServer?pagename=home.

I'm going with the Polaris Project this year. They combat human trafficking, and offer social services to the survivors they help escape from monsters who have entrapped and enslaved them. I wanted to choose a different charity this year, an org that fights sex trafficking, and these guys do it well (and efficiently according to Chartity Nav).

http://www.polarisproject.org/index.php

So counting the generous and benevolent Rockin' Doc, we've got 19 beautiful participants this year. I'll spin the big wheel shortly and get the pairings sorted out. Happy holidays, wonderful CPF friends.

Dear conor,

Thank you for your gift of $20.00 to The V Foundation.

Your donation is so important to our work – funding innovative research aimed at eliminating cancer. This research helps countless men, women, and children who are facing cancer today by funding novel, effective treatments. And it allows us to uncover strategies to prevent and cure cancer, to stop the suffering that
cancer inflicts. Your generous support makes this possible.

The V Foundation is an excellent steward of your money. Again in 2013, we received a top 4-star rating from Charity Navigator indicating that The V Foundation is in the top tier of charities. The V Foundation awards 100 percent of direct cash donations to cancer research and related programs. Due to generous donors, the Foundation has an endowment that covers administrative expenses.

Our work is urgent and important. Much progress has been made through the research we have funded, and much remains to be accomplished. Our stellar scientific advisors ensure that we fund the best research conducted by the best physicians and scientists. We are strategic, and we are driven. Your support is invaluable to making the progress of our time, and we are deeply grateful to you!

Jim Valvano challenged us by saying “Don’t Give Up . . . Don’t Ever Give Up.”® That challenge is more alive now than ever before. With your help, we will find answers that save lives.

For more information on how you can help in the fight against cancer, please call us toll-free at 1-800-4-JimmyV, or visit our website at www.jimmyv.org. Again, thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Dear Chad Ochoseis,

Thank you for your generous donation to Camfed. Your valuable gift will help transform the life of a girl or young woman in rural Africa.

How? Research shows an educated girl in Africa:

• Is 3 times less likely to be HIV positive
• Earns 25 percent more income
• Has a smaller, healthier family

In partnership with donors like you, Camfed has helped improve educational opportunities for 1,940,700 children in Africa, who are now on their way to turning the tide of poverty.

If you have any questions about your donation or would like to learn more about our work, please email donations@camfed.org.

Dear Kong76,

Thank you for your generous donation to the Esophageal Cancer Action Network, Inc. Your contribution will allow us to get the word out about esophageal cancer and work to increase funding for important research to better prevent, identify and treat this devastating disease.

Esophageal cancer is among the deadliest of cancers; only pancreatic cancer has a worse survival rate. Nearly twice as many Americans will die of esophageal cancer this year than melanoma. Yet, while most of us are aware of the link between sun exposure and skin cancer, very few are aware of esophageal cancer and its link to heartburn or gastroesophageal reflux (GERD).

Your support allows us to warn those most at risk so that in the future more cases of esophageal cancer will be discovered at earlier, treatable stages. Through your generosity, our life saving mission is furthered. For that, we are deeply grateful.

April is Esophageal Cancer Awareness Month. If you would like to help more people understand that Heartburn can cause CANCER, simply fill in our online order form. We will send your free Reach Out Kit with posters, brochures and wristbands right away so that you can help us spread our life-saving message.

With many thanks,

Mindy Mintz Mordecai
President and CEO
Esophageal Cancer Action Network (ECAN)

Thank you, Monk! This group does great work.

I was contacted by the Santa Claus girls about how the donation will be listed in the paper. It will show up a "The Crane Pool Forum".

MGIM, do you know which paper it will show up in and when they publish the list?

I sure do. It will appear in the Grand Rapids Press. I'll touch base with friends there and see if I can find out which day it runs. We used to do little stories on donors each day from Thanksgiving through Christmas, running them all on the front page, and running the list inside the paper. (It was my responsibility to coordinate this one year, and my wife was in charge for several. I noticed that Gerald and Mrs. Ford were annual donors, and a highlight was assigning a reporter to ask him about it.)

Now that the paper publishes three days a week, it's not a front page story

They've changed that a little since the format shifted. Let me see what I can find out.

I haven't been on this side of the CPF in awhile so I missed the exchange. Mr. Murray thanked me but I haven't stepped up so a $25 donation to the Tug McGraw Foundation has been made in honor of my friend David:

Re: 12th Annual (!!!) CPF Charity Gift Exchange

Dear Jay,

Thank you for your generous gift to Oxfam America. Your donation will help Oxfam tackle the root causes of poverty and hunger as we work with local partners around the world to create long-term change in poor communities.

With your support, we're helping families in the Philippines rebuild their lives following Typhoon Haiyan, aiding refugees as they escape violence in Syria and continuing our programs in more than 90 countries around the world.

Thank you for helping to make this vital work possible. Your receipt is below for your records.

Sincerely,
Raymond C. Offenheiser
President
Oxfam America

Sorry about the wait guys. Thanks for the help getting across the finish line.
