I saw his appearance at Yankee Stadium. Other than his wearing a MFY hat it was a pretty great event to be at.

Re: Guess who died in 2013

They put the man in jail, they tortured him for years, and he wholeheartedly forgave them... and worked for the rest of his life to save their nation.

That's hard not to admire.

And he waited all those years to be with his wife again, only to get out and discover she turned all batshit-crazy.

After all he went through he deserved to make it to 95. God bless him.

I... think I have.

You can count me among the admirers of Mandela. Last year in preparation for my trip to South Africa I read a bunch of books, including his fantastic autobiography Long Walk to Freedom. All that reading, as well as the movies and documentaries I watched, and of course the actual trip, gave me an affinity for South Africa that I never would have expected to have. More than for other places I've visited.

Re: Guess who died in 2013

I walked over to engage with one of my co-workers who was a correspondent for the Baltimore Sun out of South Africa during the period of transition. It was the most profound period of his life and he reflects on it constantly. He's now working for us while people read Upworthy and Buzzfeed instead of actual news.

He had just recently seen the most recent film bio and while he admired their execution, found it generally ineffective. "How do you even hope to capture a life like that in a single film?"

According to one Detroit newscast, Mandela looked pretty good for 95 years old.

Re: Guess who died in 2013

I was looking for the thread for this and was actually a bit surprised to see it merely included in the "guess who died" thread.

They (and I dont know who the "they" making this decision are) are letting Castro speak at the funeral. Pretty disgusting considering what Mandela represented. If you were Obama what would you do? would you not show up given that they've apparently decided YOU arent worthy of a speaking roll while a dictator is? there'd certainly be precedent for sending others in your stead... Bush, both Clintons and (ughh) Carter are already going.

Re: Guess who died in 2013

If he's not going to go, I think objections to Raul Castro speaking would be a poor reason.

On the other hand, if it was Charles Taylor speaking and Bush were president, Bush would likely be pilloried.

Obama will be the first leader to speak according to NBC. Not sure what the beef is with Castro, last I checked he hasn''t droned anyone.

"Hey Cameron, instead of just taking a selfie with you and me in it, whatta-say we get this good-looking blonde between us and call it a summit meeting?"

And, not surprisingly, the NY Post went with the top one here on its cover along with the implication that Michelle is all pissed at it.
Is kind of funny that, by the third picture, she's wormed her way in between Barack and the nice tempting Danish, whereas before she was the one on the outside.
Could be worse I suppose; Clinton would have had one of his secret service plant a weapon on Hillary just to give security an excuse to haul her away for a while and give him a little more time with blondie.

Oh yeah, and apparently the guy doing the sign language interpretation was a complete fraud and was just up there flapping his hands around.
Can't make this stuff up.

Re: Nelson Mandela Dead (split from Dead Thread)

White House Principal Deputy Press Secretary Josh Earnest said during a press briefing that he wasn't aware of any security concerns with the man being so close to Obama.

"I think my only reaction to that is that it's a shame that you had a service that was dedicated to honoring the life and celebrating the legacy of one of the great leaders of the 20th century, [and it] has gotten distracted by this and a few other issues that are far less important than the legacy of Nelson Mandela," he said.

Can you imagine if it was someone the general press didn't
particularly like, promote, or support?

Re: Nelson Mandela Dead (split from Dead Thread)

I saw your post and thought, "Did I say that?"

But yes, if it was Bush speaking at Netanyahu's funeral, it would probably be seen as a legitimate concern, as it gives rise to worries about the health of the state, and the judgment of the president's personal security team.

But, well, I'm really glad this poor man didn't try and throttle our president or anybody else.
