A MOSTLY HUMORLESS SET OF RULES FOR THE 2013-14 CPF SINGLE ELIMINATION SONG PARODY CONTEST


SONG PARODIES

1. Create a song parody of an actual song. Your song parody should be based on a Met topic, most likely a Met related theme, thing or person (“Met topic”) that will be provided.

MET TOPICS

2. Several Met topics will be provided in each round from which to base your song parody on. (But See, Rule #4: Met Topics in the Championship Round, below). Rather than provide each player with his or her own personal set of Met topics, this year, each player will choose his or her Met topic from a common pool of Met topics. Every Met topic provided will be available to every player (thus, “common pool”). Therefore, it is possible, and likely, that in some of the head to head match-ups, the competing players will have chosen the same Met topic. This system promotes fairness, and avoids any "I wanted to be Mr. Black; Mr. Brown sounds like shit" issues.

3. A new set of Met topics will be provided for each round. The Met topics provided in the previous round will no longer be in play and cannot be used.

MET TOPICS IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND (a/k/a THE FINALS)


4. For the championship round, one Met topic will be provided, thus requiring the two finalists to create a parody from the same theme.

SUBMITTING YOUR PARODY


5. Players will be given a generous amount of time to submit their song parodies (from one to two weeks for each song parody).

6. Song parodies will be deemed submitted when they are received by me in my CPF Private Mailbox. Players should not post their completed parodies on the main forum.

POSTING PARODIES

6a. Song parodies will be posted to the main forum by the contest administrator (that's me). In every round, each head to head matchup will have its own thread, which will be in poll format, and comprised of two anonymous head to head contestants. Contestants' identities will be disclosed at the end of each round.

7. Players may, at their option, also include a) a Youtube or other video of the actual song being parodied, either at the top or bottom of the post; b) the title of the song being parodied, either at the top or bottom of the post; c) lyrics to the song being parodied, either at the top or bottom of the post and/or d) notes, references etc.

MISSING THE DEADLINE TO SUBMIT YOUR SONG PARODY


8. Don’t.

9. But if you must, fair and humanitarian efforts will be made to accommodate contestants who cannot meet their deadlines, so long as the flow of the tournament isn’t unreasonably compromised. Contestants who cannot submit their parodies prior to the deadline for submission risk forfeiting their pending match-up and thus, tournament elimination by disqualification. Contestants who anticipate missing the deadline for submission are encouraged to contact the tournament administrator (that's me) as soon as possible to determine if reasonable arrangements can be made to to enlarge the time to submit.


THE CRANE POOL KRANEPOOL CUP

10. This year’s contestants will be playing for the Crane Pool Kranepool Cup ("CPKC") , named so in honor of the forum namesake.



11. Ron Swoboda’s face will be etched off of the cup shown above, and replaced with an image of the winner’s face. The other side of the cup will list every past winner of the Song Parody contest, in the style of The Stanley Cup.

12. The CPKC will remain in my sole and exclusive possession The CPKC will not go on public tour.


12. No one may visit me to view The CPKC.

SEEDINGS

13. All 16 contestants were randomly seeded from 1-16, and then slotted accordingly in a standard 16 seed single elimination bracket. Random seeds were generated by writing each contestant's name on a small piece of paper - one contestant per piece of paper - placing all 16 pieces of paper into the Crane Pool Kranepool Cup with Swoboda's face still etched on the cup, and then drawing out each piece of paper, one at a time. The contestant's name that appeared on the first piece of paper drawn from the CPKP received the #1 seed, the second name received the #2 seed, etc. All 16 pieces of paper were of identical size and weight. The seeding process was supervised and audited by my mother.

THE BRACKET

14. The Bracket:



FIFO (First in - First Out) SEEDING FOR SUBSEQUENT ROUNDS

14a. Head to head matchups for the first round of the tournament are determined by the aforementioned random seeding process (see The Bracket). For subsequent rounds, contestants will be matched up against each other in the order in which they submit their song parodies to my private mailbox. Thus, the author of the first parody submitted will be matched up against the author of the second parody submitted, etc. With this method, contestants will not know the identity of their opponents until the end of each round.

VOTING

18. Each head to head matchup will receive its own unique thread. Voting in each first round head to head contest will end 48 hours after it is posted to the forum. If, after the 48 hour voting period, a matchup is tied, the voting period will be extended for approximately 24 hours.

19. Voting is open to all forum members -- contestants and non-participants. Please don't vote more than once.

20. The identities of first-round contestants will be disclosed shortly after all first-round polls have ended.

THE RALPH KINER MEMORIAL PROCLAMATION

26. By unanimous vote of the Board of Directors of the 2013-14 Crane Pool Kranepool Cup (that's me), this year's tournament will be named and known as the Ralph Kiner Memorial, in loving memory of the Mets longest tenured announcer. Ralph would be greatly honored to accept this tribute if he were still with us, and he'd probably say something like: "To all you Valentines out there, Happy Father's Day". Ralph was selected to Baseball's Hall of Fame for his considerable accomplishments as a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates, yet he is as vital to the history of the Mets organization as he was to the Pittsburgh franchise. In light of the foregoing, there can only be one Mets topic for the remaining finalists:

AMENDMENTS TO THE RULES (WITH EVEN MORE LESS HUMOR)

The following changes have been made to the tournament rules:

a) All contestants should submit their songs on or before 1/13/14, 11:59PM. The contestants in the first group (Former Rule 16) are given an additional three days to submit their songs. Contestants in the second group (Former Rule 17) are unaffected by this change.

b) Rule 18 is re-written to reflect that voting for each first-round head to head contest should close in precisely 48 hours. This is based on my discovery that the forum software allows members to set an automatic computer generated and enforced deadline for the closing of polls that they create.

AMENDMENTS

16. All contestants must submit their completed first round song parodies no later than January 13, 2014, 11:59PM.

17. Repealed

18. Each head to head matchup will receive its own unique thread. Voting in each first round head to head contest will end 48 hours after it is posted to the forum.

If by anonymous, you mean that I post each matchup thread without identifying the contestants, this is a terrific idea. Let's put it to the membership. I'd bet that MFS62 woulda played under this format.

This means that the winners can't be identified until the voting period ends for all of the same round matchups. Otherwise, you know, by process of elimination, you'd figure out the identities of contestants to the last matchup(s). Also, if the matchups are posted in a staggered format instead of all at once, the earliest winners and losers would be expected to keep their identities secret. Also, the doors to the Looser's Lounge won't open until the entire round is over. But these are minor concessions, and shouldn't be obstacles to implementing this idea.

I like JCL's idea also. So then, I guess, the first two who would submit would be up against each other, making the brackets above unnecessary.

If you mean that the first two contestants that submit their parodies to me are then matched up against each other unidentified, and then the next two contestants that submit their parodies are matched up against each other unidentified, etc., etc., well this is a radical departure, and not expressed in JCL's post. (At least, I don't think). But we can do this, too. Let's put this suggestion up for discussion, too, and see what the field says about "the sharpie rules".

I totally support the jcl rule with the sharpie variation.

That way there's total anonymity where even the contestants don't know their opponent.

You can even re-seed the brackets and keep e'm private so even the contestants don't know who they're up against.

To clarify things in case anyone's confused - including myself - the following proposed rule changes are being considered for adoption:

Under JCL's proposal, the bracket stays as is. Contestants will be identified only after voting is completed for the entire round. The format is repeated for each succeeding round.

sharpie's proposal does away with conventional tournament seeding and thus, "The Bracket". Instead, contestants are matched up against each other in the order in which they submit their parodies to my private mailbox. Thus, the first parody submitted will go head to head against the second parody submitted, the third parody against the fourth parody, etc. This seeding format will apply to each round.

As things stand, JCL's proposal appears to be on pace to be adopted, although it hasn't been officially adopted yet; sharpie's isn't even close.

To make a bit of a pitch for my amendment:

I do feel that if we knew who the players were, part of what we would be doing would be guessing who wrote what. The amendment makes it pure selecting the parody you are looking at without knowing anything about who wrote it. I do feel that there have been times that the popularity of certain posters may influence votes. Not that I feel that I have benefited or been slighted by who I have been going up against but I think it is harder for newer posters to make gains when you know even the possibility of their identity. That being said, I would be happy to go with JCL's proposal (or whatever is decided).

OE: AMENDMENTS TO THE PROPOSED AMENDMENT POSTS --I revised the earlier post to reflect that sharpie's proposal apparently also incorporates JCL's cone of silence. Otherwise, the adoption of sharpie's proposal, as I previously interpreted it, without JCL's proposal, would merely provide for an alternate seeding method, but without any anonymity.

I have a question for sharpie, but really for anyone: suppose JCL's proposal, but not sharpie's, were to be adopted. Would anonymity be significantly compromised? Wouldn't JCL's proposal, by itself, eliminate the popularity contest aspect to the contest (assuming for the sake of discussion that there even is one)? Each contestant would know the identity of his opponent by virtue of the bracket. But would this slight breach of anonymity make any difference? Doesn't every contestant vote for his own song anyway? Was there ever an instance of a contestant voting for his or her opponent's parody? Unless some contestant, knowing his opponent's identity, then wages a private message campaign to drum up votes for himself by trying to persuade others not to vote for the privately unmasked opponent. And I don't see that happening. Just askin'.

Ah, I had imagined that previously the contest would be between two named posters, but voters wouldn't know who wrote what. If, indeed, it would be two unnamed posters then I suppose the anonymity angle is taken care of.

The advantage of the amendment is to keep things moving as often one person is finished way before his or her opponent and this way they should be coming faster since every "bracket" would fill each time two people submitted.

But I'm not going to post any head to heads in any round until all of the other parodies for that round have also been submitted. The reasons for this are that a) the topics are pooled; and b) in each round, there will be less topics available than there are contestants.

This guarantees that there will be instances where more than one contestant chooses the same topic. So, for example, I don't want to post a head to head where one of the contestants is parodying Charlie Williams, when there might be other contestants working on their own as yet unsubmitted Charlie Williams parodies.

If head to heads can be posted as they come in, instead of one complete round at a time, then some contestants will have the later round topics before others. This isn't necessarily a major sticking point. But I think that these are: it would then be technically possible for one contestant to have advanced to the finals before others have submitted their first round parodies. Also, one slow poke can still hold up the whole tournament. You can't have a final round until all the earlier head to heads have been completed. And in general, I don't think that this proposal with the head to heads as they come in instead of one round at a time wrinkle promotes the timely submission of parodies. I think that with your new wrinkle, the tournament will likely die on the vine, as it did the last time.

We are voting? I haven't voted that I am aware. I have agreed with stuff. If we are voting I vote for anonymity and anything else that makes it more interesting as long as it allows me to use the one I have ready for submission.

I thought this might be the case about 20 minutes after telling Zvon that we're voting. I was wondering if I shoulda just pulled a Lawrence Tierney as Joe Cabot my way or the highway this ain't no democracy routine, and (like you wrote) whether this is what youse wanted. Anyway, there's overwhelming support for JCL's proposal, so that one's officially adopted. I'll post head to head matchups without identifying the contestants until the end of each round. This process will be repeated in each successive round.

We're on the fence with respect to sharpie's seeding as they're submittted proposal. And I've made a Joe Cabot executive decision on sharpie' second proposal. We're gonna play this one round at a time.

I already worked out a whole song parody tour for youse guys in my head -- year round tournaments and seedings and rankings, all leading up to the prestigious year end Crane Pool Kranepool Cup©. For the Spring we'll have the Liverpool to Crane Pool Song Parody Open© (details to folllow). And in the Summer, there'll be the Met-a-Physical Open©, not as prestigious as the Crane Pool Kranepoool Cup©, but considered by most to be the most challenging of the tournaments. There, you'll test your song-parodying skills against a backdrop of some of the fringiest did-they-even-exist Mets (hence "Met-a-Physical"). With a victory in the Met-a-Physical, you'll make big gains in the bml rankings©.

Okay. I've made some executive decisions, and resolved the matter of the new proposals. The rules have been amended. You can check the rules at the top of this thread for changes. Changes, amendments, etc. appear in bold, italicized and underlined text.


In summary:

JCL's proposal is adopted. In every head to head matchup thread, contestants' identities will not be disclosed. Contestants' identities will be revealed only at the completion of each round. I can't see anything unfair about this rule. Moreover, the rule should reduce, if not altogether eliminate, the possibility that some voters cast their votes based on the identity of the contestant rather than on the quality of the parody.

I've arrived at a compromise solution with respect to sharpie's seeding proposal. For the first round (the Sweet Sixteen) the seeding will remain unchanged, and the tournament will proceed in accordance with "The Bracket". For subsequent rounds, contestants will be seeded in the order in which they submit their parodies to me. Thus, the first parody submitted will be matched up against the second parody submitted, etc. This means that in the second round, the winner of the first round TransMonk/Zvon match-up will not necessarily compete against the winner of the first round LWFS/Fman match-up.

Personally, I don't see what this proposal brings to the table. Granted, the rule virtually eliminates the possibility that a contestant will know the identity of his opponent. But so what? A contestant isn't gonna vote for his opponent anyway. I suppose that this proposal might quell suspicions (if there are any) that the seedings weren't randomly generated. So there's that, I guess. But somebody's gotta play against this guy and somebody's gotta play against that guy no matter how the thing is seeded. So there's that, too. But we'll adopt this seeding rule, anyways. Besides, anyone who can read as many real books in a year as sharpie does ought to have a proposal named after him.

Anyway, when the Liverpool to Crane Pool Open© comes to town, this seeding business will hopefully be resolved. Contestants will, by then, have bml rankings©*. Any unranked contestants will be seeded at the bottom of the tournament.

sharpie's other proposal will not be adopted, for the reasons I stated in earlier posts. The tournament will be played one round at a time.

Good luck and get cracking on those parodies.

How Phillies' Comcast deal could leave Mets in the dust

Earlier this week, the Philadelphia Phillies made official a long-rumored 25-year, $2.5 billion television deal with Comcast Sportsnet.

It's a decent deal for the Phillies, but it may be most interesting for what it does to the Mets: It puts them at a financial disadvantage to their division rivals for the near future, giving the Phillies the ability, regardless of attendance, to spend about twice what the Mets will on payroll next year.

The funny thing is the Phillies will have secured this competitive edge on the strength of a TV deal that's similar, but on balance inferior, to the one that Fred Wilpon and the other Mets owners have had in place since 2006.

You may well wonder how that's possible.

The answer is that much of the considerable revenue generated by the Mets' TV deal has been going, in recent years, straight into the pockets of the teams' creditors.

The Mets' ownership group also owns 65 percent of SNY, a far bigger portion of a network in a much larger market than even Philadelphia.

But the Mets' owners have been financing debt against the team, against the network, and twice-annual debt balloon payments on Citi Field ever since their accounts with Bernie Madoff ceased to provide the liquidity that allowed them to live the Phillies' way.

Don't forget, Mets payroll was well over $140 million in 2009, second only to the Yankees. But that payroll reflected commitments made prior to the discovery of Madoff's fraud in December 2008. The first time Mets ownership publicly claimed, falsely, that the Madoff fraud hadn't affected their finances or those of the team came at the press conference to introduce Francisco Rodriguez, less than a week after Madoff had been arrested.

Mets payroll has been steadily decreasing ever since, and the once-anticipated offseason of the moment, based upon expring contracts, looks to be leading to a payroll even lower than that of 2013.

This past season, the Mets had a payroll of around $88 million, according to the Associated Press, while the Phillies checked in at more than $159 million. The new television deal locks this dynamic into place for the forseeable future, unless Mets ownership finds a new way to navigate their upcoming debts.

Wilpon and company, somewhat ridiculously, have tried to pin these draconian cuts on current general manager Sandy Alderson, based on the idea that somehow Alderson doesn't want additional money to improve a team he's frequently made clear he knows is sub-standard.

But Alderson, in terms of his knack for doing a lot with a little, is probably one of the best general managers in the game, ably supported by his lieutenants Paul DePodesta and J.P. Ricciardi. His ability to piece together respectable teams masks the financial problem.

The Phillies are in almost precisely the opposite situation.

What the Phillies' new TV deal does for the organization's bottom line is to turn what had been a $35 million annual rights fee for broadcasting games into an annual payoff that will average $100 million annually in rights fees alone, along with a 25 percent ownership stake in the station, which will pay off in value generated for the network (advertising, fees paid by cable providers to carry it), and is amplified by the fact that the Sixers and Flyers are also on the network.

Estimates for what this will ultimately be worth vary, but Scott Boras put it at around $200 million per season, a number I heard from someone intimately familiar with the deal as well.

The math is easy on that one: It means that if the Phillies didn't make a dime in attendance, the difference between the old deal and the new one would be sufficient to support the entirety of their 2013 payroll, which ranked among the largest in baseball.

The Phillies don't intend to go much higher than their self-imposed cap of appoximately $170 million, but according to their president, David Montgomery, they intend to spend the money more intelligently.

"I don't see us going any higher than where we've been," Montgomery said. "For us, the secret is to spend it well. Since we've moved in here, we have been able to be a club that is substantial in its payroll. I assume we will continue to be in the top four or five in the game. Hopefully, we'll make some good decisions and people will see an improved club in 2014."

And while Alderson has overperformed in Queens with what his bosses have given him, the Phillies' have done the opposite, spending poorly and in such a way that has masked their financial edge.

They've been near the top of major league payrolls, but their general manager Rubén Amaro, Jr. has wasted the money that's come in from a well-capitalized ownership group, and a period of high attendance.

In 2013, the Phillies finished 73-89. And the fans took notice, too: attendance dropped from 3.565 million to just over 3 million, the biggest drop this side of Miami.

The effect of such a revenue loss in the past would have been a budget cut. That's no longer the case. The new TV deal makes the Phillies attendance-proof, which is particularly important for a market that hasn't routinely supported its baseball team all that much.

The Mets, meanwhile, are more reliant than ever on ticket sales. And the more they cut, the more attendance drops.

If the Mets' owners can't get a handle on their debt, that cycle will persist, and the team's financial situation will only get worse relative to competing teams.

It's not just the Phillies.

There are the Nationals right there in the division, locked into a poor television deal, but with significant enough attendance to keep payroll around $140 million, with the potential to rise. Even the Braves, on a poor television deal and in a stadium that doesn't provide much revenue, were at around $90 million in 2013, expect to be at a similar mark in 2014, and are moving to a new cash cow of a stadium after the 2016 season.

That's just in the division. The Diamondbacks have a new television deal coming. So do the Rockies and Reds. All over baseball, teams continue to cash in the way the Mets were supposed to in 2006, before the Madoff ruse was revealed, leaving ownership in its current financial paralysis. Rather than cash in on a television deal they've cannibalized to keep ownership afloat, the Mets are hoping merely to refinance their looming $250 million debt against the team coming due this June, while a far larger debt against the network looms in 2015.

That's been a huge competitive disadvantage for the Mets. But with each new television deal, not to mention the across-baseball jump in national television revenue, it becomes that much bigger.

Eventually, I'll just call a forfeit if enough time elapses or if the straggler(s) don't/doesn't even bother to get in touch with me. Then, their opponent(s) would automatically advance to the next round.

True story: when I was in middle school I signed up for a bracketed handball tournament on a lark even though I had hardly ever played and wasn't very good when I did. I ended up winning twice because my opponent didn't show up. Then in the semi-finals a real player emerged and I got creamed ending my fantasy of winning a tournament that I never participated in.

Here's something that I didn't anticipate: Two contestants chose not only the same Met topic, but the same actual song to parody. Think that's some coincidence? Well then it happened again. So we've got two sets of two contestants, each choosing the same Met topic and the same song to parody.

So what do y'all think of the new anonymous tournament format? Overall, I think it's great. I think it might inhibit some of your parody comments. I seem to remember the commentary as being much raunchier, and not so conservative in the past. But if so, that's a small price to pay for what I think are big benefits from playing a blind tournament.

While the work has been brilliant, I don't think I want to read yet another Ike Davis parody (apologies to the one or two posters who will be submitting Ike Davis parodies later today....). I prefer the variety of the old format.

I love the anonymity too.

The downside of this year's format isn't the anonymity, but perhaps the single relatively small pool --- leading to a redundancy of themes, and (oops!) ultimately, an occasion redundancy of ideal songs to pick from. I wonder if there is a disadvantage of being the third contestant to have posted his or her song about Ike chasing curves. (Cross-posting with Metfae, above.)

I'm just running this tourney. Ya gotta give JCL the credit for the idea of anonymity. And to tell you the truth, when I first read about his super idea for unidentified contestants, I was angry with myself for not thinking of that idea before he did. I think that there's a smaller turnout this year because past contests got bogged down when some contestants couldn't turn in their parodies in a reasonably timely manner. Some of those contests got so bogged down that they couldn't be played to completion. Also, I think that it's a big commitment for some, to have to write three or four song parodies in a relatively short period.

But wait for the MAP MUFF Open (coming soon). That tournament is designed to go down smoother than any other ever did.

Yes, but so can everyone else. Again leading to multiple parodies using the same subject.

It's one thing to go head on head with a subject in the final round, but in earlier rounds I'd prefer a bit more variety.

OE - Plus the old format had the extra strategical decisions. Do you go with a great topic early, or save it for a later round? How confident are you feeling about going with a lesser subject in an early round?

That was the point. A huge element of unfairness is eliminated when everyone has the same topics to choose from. And also, if you find parodies with repeated themes boring, it probably (and this is just my opinion) has more to do with the parodies themselves instead of the the "pooled topics" format.

OE: This is by no means meant to denigrate the songwriting talent and creativity on display this year, which is, as always, excellent. But if someone writes an upbeat song about a Mets' hero or event I may be more inclined to vote for it.

I considered doing a Hundley. Hell, I wrote and submitted a Hundley. But I caught a light bulb while driving, and was driven to submit another one.

The small pool/same topics thing may be more fair, but, well, it's just less FUN to read five Wilpons-are-cheap takes. This feels a little like the compulsory rounds of a figure skating/gymnastics meet.

Point taken. But there were four other topics that nobody chose. And other than Charlie Williams, the remaining seven topics have a rich or colorful story that made them easy parody subjects. And even ol' Charlie Williams, well he might be a one-trick or one-story pony. But that's some story. That most of you chose from just three of the eight available topics was, I believe, just a random quirk. One compromise solution is to make more pooled topics available, thus preserving the fairness angle while minimizing the possibility that everyone chooses the same two or three topics.

I'm absorbing everyone's opinions.

if i may suggest a potential future wrinkle, that might be better suited to the common pool of topics...

instead of a head-to-head matchup bracket, we vote/rank all songs against each other, and eliminate the bottom two (or more). MVP-voting-style. 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1

it would open up a strategy in that, such as for this round, we've got two pairs of song/subject repeats. do they drag each other down? would ike-fatigue push up another lesser-used topic?

then there's the gamesmanship angle of not voting for a superior song, simply because it is superior, with the intent of pushing your own song higher.

yeah, it could end up being tedious, or a colossal fuckup, but ti could be interesting, too.

Hey! That's kind of my MAP MUFF Open! The Met-A-Physical Match-Up Free Free-for-all. No head to head matchups! Nobody to drag down the whole tournament with a late submission. No reason to complain about the draw or their opponent. It's simple. All the songs are in one big thread. 35% of the field advances to the next round, which is the final round (though this could be adjusted). My idea was to have no more than two rounds, because I suspect that there are many members who would like to play in one of these contests, but are put off by having to, potentially, write three, four or five songs. The ship sails on launch date. Anyone who isn't ready misses the boat. The tourney won't suffer because it doesn't matter whether we have an even or odd number of players or a number divisible by four. No byes or play-ins. Everybody in the pool. Everybody gets to vote for a yet to be determined # of songs. 35 % advances.

I hated that. The closest contest was the matchup with the forfeit, which almost ended in a tie. The Ceets/Lefty matchup was close for the first eight votes until Lefty pulled away.

Sat down a few years ago and watched the complete season (or so) of Quark on DVD out of family loyalty. I can't remember how exactly, but Richard Benjamin and I are related. And not just because we may be the only two people to have seen every episode of Quark.

Mary Tyler Moore became iconic. Arnie became cancelled a year later, but I remember thinking both were light years beyond what was normally on television (even at seven years old I could detect rural-directed dreck).

September of '70 also brought us The Odd Couple and the aforementioned Partridge Family, indeed setting the stage for the place to be.

My memories of that period you mention are very hazy and imprecise but I think if you asked me I'd say the Brady Bunch and the Partridge Family were both on ABC on Friday nites (BB, then PF), and that those would be the first two shows whose weekly time slot I knew.

(Lunchpail is growing up in a world where time slots and days of the week wrt television shows are completely foreign, by the way. Also, 700 channels when we had like 5.)

I used to watch the tail end of that Friday Night lineup, beginning with The Odd Couple. With Love American Style, I initially thought I’d be watching something not meant for an elementary schooler. I was wrong. Wasn’t Room 222 somewhere in that lineup, though?

The ’75 ABC season preview trumpets the world television premiere of The Sound of Music – 10 years after its first theatrical run. Kids and young adults today wouldn’t comprehend having to wait 10 years to see a big Hollywood movie.

When McDonald’s tried to build a location in Sedona, Arizona they ran into some trouble. The city felt that the famous “golden arches” would be an eyesore and clash with the natural coloring of the area and they didn’t want to sacrifice the beauty of their city for some french fries and burgers. To remedy this, McDonald’s offered to replace all the yellow with turquoise instead and the city accepted.

I actually weighed "Down on the Corner" as an option, as well as the only other "Korner" pop song I could think of: Genesis's "Lonely Man on the Corner." I wasn't able to make either work, and besides, given only Ralph Kiner as a subject, I became committed early to writing about his love life.

I actually wanted to go hip-hop here. My wife really wanted me to go with Positive K's "I Got a Man," reset as a conversation between Ralph and Liz Taylor.

Excellent job, Edgy! I was thinking of doing a couple of these this year, but time did not cooperate.

I was very much inspired to come up with this little 3 track jingle this evening after hearing yours, though. I think I sense a tradition.

That might only be up for a couple of days...I don't need Fogerty suing me.

It was nice to have a change to the format this year that made things more interesting. Kiner was a tough pull for the finals...I was so used to having options in years past.

I thought about VU's "Sweet Jane" after riffing off the first line featuring "corner" (Standing on the corner, suitcase in my hand). But Sunday morning quickly faded into Sunday afternoon and the CCR was easier for me to get a handle on.

i think i'm being penalized for not providing either a song title or a link to the source material. or for tardiness. or because bml hates a lack of punctuation.

Blame it on the purely objective proprietary mathematical algorithms that determine the CPF song parody rankings. If it was up to me, I'da ranked you in the top one or two.
