Jordany Memories

Fulfills his photodestiny. Signs with Marlins.

Sort of a perfect landing place for both parties. Minor league deal, tho.

Pie in the face, fastball in the junk.

Twice turned a Jon Papelbaum save to a Mets win.

Re: Jordany Memories

Papelbon in 2012. Walkoff grand slam in 2013. HBP idiocy that clouded his transcendent contributions. Calling on Collins to suck on his cocksure attitude. And got hit where it counted in a game that didn't count.

Sure squeezed a lot of images out of just a couple of results.

Honestly thought he should've been given more time in the OF in 2012, but I guess rubbing everybody in the organization the massively wrong way can't help but wind up counterproductive.

Re: Jordany Memories

The kid had attitude. Not always the talent to back it up, but he did have attitude.

I remember being amused by Keith calling him Valdespinny once.

And the walk-off homer against Palpelbon was sweetness defined!

But generally, Jordany was more trouble than payoff. May he be the same way for the Marlins.

Tried to make me think he could be a super hero savior.

Then I got to know him.

Re: Jordany Memories

Oh, I think the talent was (and is) there. Just not the discipline. They speak of makeup. Whatever it means, it don't mean him.

Miami is exactly the place --- they'll play him enough for him to do something spectacular once a month but tolerate the lack of polish that would be counterproductive and demoralizing in a pennant race. Plus he'll be closer to his pharmacist.

Suspended in the minors. Twice actually --- once with the Mets and once with a winter league club. Would love to eventually get those chapters added to his bio.

Had high hopes, then he became nothing but an annoyance. If he gets too much playing time he'll be exposed, just as he was with the Mets.

Re: Jordany Memories

I'll remember that there were several teams of out of town announcers (Washington & Atlanta spring to mind) thinking he was a star in the making based on a handful of big hits against them.
It's too bad that you can't arrange trades through announcers or else we could have flipped 'Speen for half their minor league systems.

This. Biggest memory for me will be the big pinch-hit home run in a game I was at in DC.

He will enjoy playing the big CF pinball machine as a Marlin..

He had his moments, good and bad, and will not be forgotten soon..

That still cracks me up. And Jordy can see him coming and everything. He's like: I see you, come here, I'm ready for it, turns to the closest camera on him, and BAM!

I really can never get enough pie. I really was hoping against hope that he'd end up with the Braves, just for gits and shiggles. But, y'know, the Tropic of Clubhouse Cancer works, too.

I'm with Edgy-- the talent is there. But, hey, talent without discipline makes for really interesting "You know, I used to be a ballplayer" stories from 'Uncle Jordy' ten years from now.

He did allow us to coin a new word:
Valdespin - Verb - to be hit in the groin with a baseball while not wearing a cup.

2 new words.
Valdesac- noun- the area Jordany was hit in while not wearing a cup.

As far as I can see I only ever made one KaBOOM for Valde.

And that's another strike against him. Fans tend to think of him as a young player still searching to reach his potential and harness his emotions ... but 26 really isn't that young.

Oh well, he's somebody else's problem now. What's mind-boggling is that nothing that happened in the past year appears to have humbled him even slightly. Or to put it another way, I don't get that he doesn't get it.

I don't know. Assholes learn humility and turn over a new leaf in the movies, but in real life, true conversions come pretty hard.

I think back to G-Fafif's post from after Jordany got hit in the beans, saying something along the lines of, "He say's he'll wear a cup from now on but the best part is you know he won't."

Re: Jordany Memories

Rubinesque followup with new old dirt:

Jordany Valdespin reportedly has abandoned his Dominican winter-league team during the playoffs after getting upset at getting pinch-hit for during a playoff game by Ronny Paulino. Valdespin immediately packed up his belongings and bolted the clubhouse, according to the Spanish-language report.

Valdespin, who signed a minor-league deal with the Miami Marlins this offseason that does not include a major league invite, has a long history of tantrums.

His final major league act as a Met was throwing a fit directed at Terry Collins in Pittsburgh and demanding to be put on the disabled list when he learned he was being demoted to Triple-A Las Vegas. Valdespin was uninjured at the time.

There are plenty of never-publicly-told stories as well about Valdespin's brash behavior.

According to team insiders, after getting promoted to the majors for the first time in 2012, Valdespin demanded closer Frank Francisco buy the rookie suits. Now, it often is a tradition for veterans to buy call-ups one nice suit for road trips since many of the young players do not yet have big bank accounts. But demanding suits? That's not quite how it works.

Major league players already had their antennae raised about Valdespin's antics that spring training.

In a Grapefruit League game, Valdespin reached first base, then started taunting All-Star catcher Yadier Molina from the St. Louis Cardinals, telling Molina he would steal. Mets infielder Ronny Cedeno subsequently pulled Valdespin aside and told him that is not how a player who has yet to appear in the majors ought to treat an esteemed veteran. Valdespin proceeded to curse out the well-meaning Cedeno, who was so upset he no longer wanted to talk to Valdespin.

Valdespin was cut loose by the Mets last month, at the tender deadline. He had served a 50-game Biogenesis-related suspension late in the season.
