Chris Capuano, he who ate innings adequately in 2011, will reportedly tie on the bib and attempt to gobble 'em up for the Red Sox in 2014 not by way of the ever-popular minor league deal but an actual MLB contract. You may recall the Sox tried to buy Caps (as one of our U.K. readers liked to call him) with about a week to go the season they collapsed.

That happened to me once, at Joshua Tree Park in California. The spines of the cactus went through the sole of my sneaker and also through the sides. I had to sit down and pull each one out of my foot and out of my sneaker.

I suppose that's one of the perils of training in Arizona. Better to train in Florida, where the worst thing you can step on is an alligator.

Re: Meet the Ex-Mets (Continuing Careers 2014)

Jorge Arenguere visits with veteran Jose Reyes for Sports On Earth ten years after first covering him for the Record.

Then:

That spring was a time of transition for Reyes. The Mets had moved him from shortstop to second base after signing Kazuo Matsui. Yet Reyes never complained, either on or off the record. If he was bitter, he never showed it. He happily went about his work, even though reporters -- and I suspect some in the front office and the coaching staff -- thought moving him out of his natural position was a silly move. Reyes clearly was the superior shortstop, but Mets ownership believed Matsui was pivotal toward building a contending team, so they did everything possible to accommodate him. Each day Reyes eagerly took the field and took grounders at second base, and he even developed a good rapport with Matsui. The two often joked with one another, as much as they could across the language barrier.

Watching Reyes play was an even bigger pleasure. He was dynamic in every way. Anyone could see he was a remarkable player, and he made you believe that one day he would be considered one of the best in the game. He also seemed to be the type of player Major League Baseball could market to a young Latino audience: hip, gregarious and without controversy. Reyes had never been entangled in any steroid scandals, nor had he ever feuded with teammates or opponents. Most everyone seemed to like him. It seemed at the time that Reyes was destined to become one of the most important players of his generation.

Now:

So despite being 30, despite the fact that speed is one of the first things that abandons an older player, and despite coming off a year of injury, Reyes vows he can be the same dynamic player he was with the Mets. He's so emphatic that you want to believe him. But the odds aren't good. Speedy players don't age gracefully.

Reyes was supposed to be better than the average athlete. He was supposed to be impervious to all the things that hindered the common player. He was supposed to be one of the best, and the best usually find a way to excel past their primes. So maybe, just maybe, it's not too late for Reyes to become one of those defining players of his era.

"The goals for me?" Reyes says. "I have so many, since last year essentially was a lost season because of injuries. There were so many things I couldn't do, like steal bases or hit triples, things that are part of my game and my identity. I ask for health. If I'm healthy, I know I can put up numbers and do the things I've always done."

As he dresses in front of his locker, Reyes puts on a Superman undershirt. The Man of Steel is Reyes' favorite superhero, and he owns several shirts with the iconic "S" insignia. Not coincidentally, Superman was someone whose powers were unaffected by age and time.

I don't get this one. Gomez watches a fly, looking to admire his homerun handiwork, and ends up embarrassing himself and having to break out of his reverie and turn on the burners. His speed gets him to third, but he might have gotten an inside-the-parker.

So the universe has seemingly paid him back, penalizing him for his vanity. Why would the other team want to get in his face over that? Be thankful and encourage him in his foolishness.

Re: Meet the Ex-Mets (Continuing Careers 2014)

the Brewers shouldn't wait for the league to hand down suspensions; they should tell CarNoGo that his preening at home plate may have well cost his team a run, not to mention the continuing incitement of opposing teams at his showboating (which endangers his teammates, in this case resulting in a brawl), so they will fine and suspend him themselves. But of course they're 14-5, and CarNoGo is a big reason why, and so they will not do that.

He says that recently Gomez informed him, while holding a plate full of kiwi, that the fruit had three times as much potassium as bananas. "I asked him how he heard it," Braun says. Re: Meet the Ex-Mets (Continuing Careers 2014)

Texas Rangers hitting coach Dave Magadan remembers his time on the Padre bench alongside Tony Gwynn for Tyler Kepner in the Times:

Dave Magadan played the last three years of his career for the San Diego Padres, from 1999 to 2001. Those were also the final years of Tony Gwynn’s career, and the two filled a similar role as veteran left-handed hitters off the bench. Naturally, they talked a lot about hitting.

“A lot of the routines that I do now, in the cage with guys, are directly related to conversations that we had,” said Magadan, the Texas Rangers’ hitting coach. “He was a big proponent of the tee and things you could do off the tee to improve your bat path and make you more direct to the ball. He loved that, and a lot of that stuff I still teach today.”

Magadan still marvels at the prescience of Gwynn, who died of cancer last week at 54. As a pinch-hitter in his final years, Gwynn would tell Magadan how the pitcher would set him up, and he would almost always guess right. If he guessed wrong before there were two strikes, Magadan said, Gwynn simply took the pitch.

For Magadan, watching Gwynn sharpened his understanding of what it meant to be a disciplined hitter.

“If he was looking for a breaking ball, he wouldn’t swing at a fastball — he would still stay on the breaking ball,” Magadan said. “That’s how he was disciplined. He wasn’t disciplined by walking a hundred times, but he was disciplined in staying on the pitch he was looking for.

“And that’s where I get my definition of discipline from. Some guys are disciplined that walk a lot; some guys are disciplined that are really good hitters and stay on the pitch they’re looking for. If he gets it, he hits it. If he doesn’t get it, then he doesn’t swing at it. Then if he gets to two strikes, of course, he battles.”

Magadan said he was never much of a guess hitter until he played with Gwynn. But by then, it was too late to salvage much more from his career.

“I wish I knew what I knew then a lot earlier in my career,” Magadan said, “because I probably would have been a lot better hitter.”

Re: Meet the Ex-Mets (Continuing Careers 2014)

Yesterday I joined several friends at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport to see the Bluefish play the Lancaster Barnstormers in some Independent League action. One of our group noted that he saw a lot of people wearing Met paraphernalia waiting to get in, and I couldn't figure out why.

When the starting line-ups were announced, I saw that former Met Chris Schwinden was starting for Lancaster:

I doubted that was it.

There was even almost-but-never-was-Met Boof Bonser coming out of the bullpen:

That wasn't it, either.

There was this announcement from the PA announcer just before the game, "To throw out the first pitch, please welcome former Major League great, Dwight Gooden":

Didn't see that one coming.

I wish Bridgeport had a team during the three years we lived near there! We had to go all the way to New Britain to see a game.

Every time I read that name, it made me do a double take. The first and last names just didn't go together. Now I probably won't have to read it so often.

The piece doesn't say he's a troublemaker, or a bad guy. All it said was that he argued with his manager about getting pulled early, but what pitcher doesn't?
All i can really see in that article is that jocks don't like other guys in a clubhouse who think, particularly if they can think about things other than the game. Yeah, he's a grown up and an individual capable of independent thought, and probably doesn't have much patience for or interest in the obsessed 1-dimensional managers and teammates that are always surrounding him. And they probably resent that.

I'll take him back in a heartbeat.

On the one hand they already have Teixeira at 1B plus about seven DHs
On the other he's not likely to have his pick of starters jobs elsewhere and, given 150 ABs in YSIII, he could mis-hit about 20 balls into HRs
